Anushka Sharma acts in and has co-produced this week's release, NH10'. Early figures show that, despite the various promotional activities, the film has opened at the Indian box office to a struggling start.
Box Office India say the film is only achieving a 10-15% occupancy and that evening shows will probably depend on word of mouth. The film is directed by Navdeep Singh and also stars Neil Bhoopalam and Darshan Kumar. It's receiving much praise from industry folk, many of who attended a special screening of the film on Thursday evening.
Last week's Dum Laga Ke Haisha' achieved a steady 10 crores in its first week. The film is continuing to receive praise and hopefully an international release is on the cards soon.

#NH10 is a film to be watched and enjoyed. It scares and shocks. Beautifully made! Anushka shines. Read my review at https://komalsreviews.wordpress.com/2015/03/14/nh10/ ...

NH10

Eros International, Phantom Films Pvt. Ltd. and Clean Slate Films' NH10 (A) is the story of a happily married couple, Meera (Anushka Sharma) and Arjun (Neil Bhoopalam), and how their lives overturn due to one incident.

Meera and Arjun live in Gurgaon and are very happy in their space. A one-off incident on the road in the dark of the night frightens Meera, taking the couple to the police on whose recommendation Meera gets the licence to keep a pistol with her for her security. The two decide to go on a picnic one day to celebrate Meera's birthday. They set off in their car on the National Highway 10.

In Haryana itself, they see Satbir (Darshan Kumar) mercilessly beating his sister, Pinky (Kanchan Sharma), and her husband. Arjun, shocked at the beastly behaviour of Satbir and his cronies, tries to intervene to save Pinky and her husband but he is silenced by Satbir who slaps him tight. As nobody else present there dares to raise his voice, Arjun helplessly gives up even as Satbir and his goons drive away in their own car with Pinky and her husband.

Frustrated, Arjun and Meera get on with their road journey but soon spot Satbir's car once again. With the intention of scaring Satbir, Arjun gets off his car, this time with Meera's pistol in hand. It is not long before Arjun and Meera are held captive by Satbir who then murders Pinky and her husband. It is now clear beyond doubt to the shocked Arjun and Meera that these were honour killings.

Meera and Arjun manage to escape from Satbir's clutches but not before killing one team member, Chhote (Ravi Beniwal). Satbir, with a view to seek revenge, follows them with his hoodlums. Meera and Arjun have to escape from Satbir and his men. Gun shots are fired, knives are used and there is fear in the minds of Arjun and Meera that they would not be spared.

Soon, Arjun is grievously injured and having been forced to abandon their car, Meera now has to battle Satbir and his men all alone in the dark of the night, that too, on the secluded and unsafe highway. Meera even reaches the police station but the police fails to come to her rescue.

Even as Satbir and his army are hot on Meera's trail, she reaches the village sarpanch's (Deepti Naval) home, hoping that she would get help from this quarter at least. But she is shocked at the turn of events.

What happens then? What is it that shocks Meera at the sarpanch's home? Who survives and who is laid to rest? What happens to Arjun?

The film is inspired by the English film, Eden Lake. The screenplay, penned by Sudip Sharma, is very engrossing and engaging. It manages to completely hook the audience's attention. Since the drama has several twists and turns, the uni-dimensional story doesn't get monotonous or boring. But the audience's sympathy doesn't go out completely to Meera and Arjun, which should've been the case, and that's because the audience feels, Arjun had no business to invite trouble the way he did. In other words, there isn't a very justifiable reason for Arjun to intervene in Satbir's business. Of course, the counter-argument to this is that Arjun is a guy with a conscience and, therefore, can't tolerate injustice. But one does wish that the writer had taken pains to make Arjun's involvement in Satbir's affairs not seem so self-inflicted. Another drawback, if one may use the word, is that the drama is very violent and there are scenes of bloodshed, gore and gut-wrenching action, which will be difficult for the womenfolk and family audience to digest. Sudip Sharma's dialogues are very real.

Anushka Sharma lives the role of Meera and shines with a very noteworthy performance. Her expressions, body language and acting, all add up so that her acting stands out. She is sure to be nominated for the best actress awards this year. Neil Bhoopalam is sincere in the role of Arjun. He gets limited scope. Darshan Kumar is menacing and he acts with effortless ease. Deepti Naval is first-rate as the village sarpanch. Tushar Grover (as Mukesh), Kanchan Sharma (as Pinky), Ravi Jhankal (as Fauji), Jaswant Singh (in the role of Omi), Yogendra Singh (as Ashok), Ashish Sharma (as Ramavtar), Ravi Beniwal (as Chhote), Siddharth Bharadwaj (as the constable), Sushil Tyagi (as the police inspector), Krishan Kumar (as the Bihari migrant), Shruti (as the Bihari migrant's wife) and Tanya Purohit (as the sarpanch's daughter-in-law) lend very able support.

Navdeep Singh's direction is wonderful. He has succeeded in creating the right amount of tension for the audience which will find it difficult to even blink for fear of missing something. Navdeep has kept the film fast-paced so that it doesn't get boring despite moving on a single track. Music (Bann Chakraborty, Ayushman Shreshta, Savera Mehta and Samira Koppikar) is more functional than anything else. The songs are all background numbers. Lyrics (by Bann Chakraborty, Neeraj Rajawat, Manoj Tapadia and Varun Grover) are alright. The Chhil gaye naina' song, recorded and picturised for the film's promotion, is conspicuous by its absence in the film. It should've been incorporated in the film because it is indeed very well-tuned (by Sanjeev Darshan). Karan Gour's background music is very good. Arvind Kannabiran's cinematography is remarkable and he uses his camera to heighten the fear element. Action scenes, choreographed by Armin Sauer and Abdul Salaam Ansari, are for the masses mainly, but they would also be liked by the multiplex audience because the violence is not uncalled for or meaningless. Mustufa Stationwala's production designing is very good. Editing (Jabeen Merchant) is crisp and sharp.

On the whole, NH10 is raw and entertaining in its own way. No doubt, it is meant more for the class audience but since the investment in the film (Rs. 14 crore approximately) is not big, it would very easily fetch commission. Sadly, the recovery from all other sources, except India theatrical, would be very limited. In spite of that, the film will fetch profits. It is a film which will win a lot of critical acclaim and one which will make the producers, director, technicians and actors associated with it, proud.

Watched the film.

I must say so far this has been the best movie of 2015 for me .It has a very socially relevant message . The whole treatment has a very edgy feeling, a tension through out .The cinematography is awesome ,the darkness has been used very well .Never seen this kind of a movie in bollywood before ..The ending is similar to Eden Lake but it does not take away from the brilliance of the film .I personally loved it more than Badlapur.

Now acting ,Anushka is outstanding man .She finally proved that she can do much more than a bubbly girl .She is superb , like few scenes ..in the starting she sees some abusive language written in the wall of a public toilet, her expression superb. Then in the climax ,where she takes her revenge , so clam yet so angry ..that expression and look ..mind blowing .Or the last cry, where she looses something very precious to her.Neel is pretty good in the film ,Other character actors are good too, specially Darshan kumar and Deepti Naval .But it is Anushka who carries the film on her shoulder.
Brilliant film, brilliant teamwork .Kudos to the team, director and Anushka.

This is one of most violent film from bollywood .It seems so real ,there is a certain rawness in this whole journey .

Only thing i thought is against the film is the dark treatment and violence ,It is not a film for everyone .But those who like this genre and waits for something different ,Go watch it .Highly entertaining and brilliant cinema

So i watched NH10 at the 2:50 show at PVR Phoenix mills yesterday. The hall was almost 60% full. I was extremely excited about Navdeep Singh's second directorial venture after Manorama Six Feet Under, so i armed myself with a large popcorn and coke, i munched my way through the national anthem and the anti tobacco campaign waiting with impatience and anticipation for the movie to begin.

A RED CENSOR CERTIFICATE set up the mood for what was to come.

Before everyone is up in arms about similarities with Eden Lake, the plot line is applied to a completely different context and therefore doesn't account as plagiarism because artists are allowed to steal because "its not about where things are taken from, but where things are taken to" (Jim Jarmusch said it so you can take it up with him), From utopia to dystopia, Navdeep takes us for a creepy drive through Haryana, the experience of which we are unlikely to forget for a long time to come. All the moments are familiar yet original and the result is a stylish, contemporary and brilliant piece of storytelling.

Navdeep creates a mature modern Indian heroine that one can relate with and look up to.
Anushka's look is fresh, dewy, her face does not look ducky and she has taken this role by the balls and performed the hell out of it. I have never been an Anushka fan per say, initially, put off by all her bubbly cockiness.
But i am a true blue convert now because she makes the rest of the lot of the leading ladies look childish, glossy and superfluous. With one bold stroke she has knocked Kangana down to number two in the list of brilliant mainstream female actors.

Anushka's portrayal of Meera was so nuanced and balanced, and her descent into darkness was so effortless and easy that it is truly laudable. She was vulnerable yet steely, sensitive yet power packed. She is a heroine you are rooting for from the word GO. In comparison, her husband's character makes me want to whack him a few times for being so silly and immature. I hated the villians, which means there were absolutely effective.

It is fantastic to see a film of this caliber coming from a "male director". Especially in the wake of all the high brow debates , Navdeep sets an example with this work.
Now the people who are stereotyping and generalizing all Indian men, can shut up. The film entirely dealt with the idea of male gaze and yet there was no male gaze in the showing of the film at any point. There was respect for every character from its creators which is rare to find in a Hindi film.

The starkness of the rural urban divide, and the multiple manifestations of patriarchy are handled in an almost video game kind of manner.
Things get progressively harder and harder for Meera's avatar, its almost like she takes on a virtual reality in the film, the banal is bizarre and things are just about hanging between real and surreal at all times. The moments are hellishly entertaining and suspenseful with just the right amount of comedy (mama-ji gets left behind!) which truly is a superb achievement in the Hindi film context.

I loved that there was minimal dialogue and great use of sound, all the information was relayed and never spoon fed and the images looked just right. Everything looked authentic and beautiful and dark- almost to a Hitchockian pitch. The added bonus was that the interval point came at the right time. The pace of the film was maintained with finesse through the second half and the film ended on the right pitch, without going into the "melodrama and maatam" over her husband's death that could have followed.

The loose reference to republic day where the cross-dressers are performing (to a homophobic audience), which is also Meera's birthday in the story, and references to Ambedkar and the constitution, are interesting. Meera is a Salim Sinai kind of character. Everything revolves around her in a nationalistic kind of way, though i am glad that all this information is just there and wasn't pressed further. I didn't think it was a matter of convenience on the part of the director as some reviewers have put it, but cleverness, this is a great example of a pulp film, a true ode to anime and Amar Chitra Katha.

I was not a huge fan of the music, apparently it is a demand of the industry, but one could've totally done without it, or maybe something other than what was.

In the end, i was happy that she got to kill those bas***ds with relish, i am happy she mowed them with her own car and beat them with their own sticks. There was karmic retribution, tragedy, hope, albeit it was bleak and dark but real life is much worse. I was sucked into the zone, and i'm yet to shake it off.
My experience as an average film viewer was truly satisfying, and as a hopeful film maker, it was inspirational. The cast and crew deserve every accolade and more!

NH10- I was all set to write a really good review for the movie since I really enjoyed watching it but then read about the similarity between this movie and Eden Lake and after reading about the storyline and the plot, I am a bit disappointed with the director, because after reading the story of Eden Lake (haven't seen the movie), it looks like they have taken the same story and just adapted it by changing the premise to the local Indian setting of social problems in most of the parts of the movie. I can neither call that inspirational nor original so I can't appreciate the writer of the movie (which I really wanted to, since I really liked the flow of the story). Anyhow it is an edge of the seat thriller with cleverly designed thrills tailor made for the Indian audience. I have never literally been at the edge of my seat while watching a recent Bollywood movie but NH10 changed that. It involves a lot of violence and blood and like Smriti says, this raw feel of the violence works for the movie.I think both Meera and Arjun's characters were well written. It was pretty evident that Meera is a feminist but I really liked the way the director showed that in a subtle way and not in your face (except the climax).

Acting wise, Anushka undoubtedly steals the show in every scene of the movie. I personally hate Anushka's acting, like really HATE HER ACTING, because she always expresses more than it's needed but credit where it's due, Anushka is the soul of the movie. I personally have never enjoyed watching a female character lift up the film all by herself since Kahaani. And for me, Anushka was as brilliant as Vidya. The subtle nuances she does throughout the film adds so much to her character, especially when she lights up a cigarette during the climax. One of the best performances for me in the recent years by any contemporary heroine. Neil and Darshan are strictly okay and to be fair, the story doesn't give any of the characters except Anushka to display their acting abilities much. Darshan looks misfit as the antagonist. Deepti Naval too was okay. I really liked the girl who is killed by Darshan's character.

It was really nice to see the audience at the theatre cheering for Anushka during the climax as if they are watching a Salman Khan fight scene. And rightfully so, the climax is that powerful. The way Anushka has minimum dialogues and minimum expressions and yet conveys her state of mind is brilliant. Thank god for no heavy duty naari shakti bhashan. Just that last dialogue between her and the sarpanch conveys the whole point of the movie.

My favorite scenes from the movie: (Might contain spoilers)
- Anushka seeing R**di scribbled on the door and cleaning it away.
-Anushka smoking in front of Darshan to tease him and his mardaangi
-The whole jeep sequence at the end.

This movie works better than Badlapur in the genre of revenge drama but I am really happy the way films are releasing this year- Badlapur, DLKH, NH10...hope this continues till the year end.

4/5

Edit: And I really want to watch the film again only for Anushka!

I just ended up watching some parts of Eden Lake. How is the ending similar? You mean the whole climax sequence or just the end? I actually found everything except the ending similar to Eden lake. 😆

^ I was pretty disappointed when I found out the film was the same as Eden Lake. Even the trailers were very similar.
