I'm not an Aamir fan or anything, but tbh, collectively, I can assure you more people know Aamir than Russel, even if they're concentrated in India.Look at this way, any desi, be it Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, or hell, even most Afghanis settled anywhere abroad, know Aamir Khan. What's the demographic of people that know Russel Peters?First of all, he's not really as mainstream a comedian in the U.S. Secondly, even if he was, I don't think stand up comics have as wide an audience as a movie star, or a television star. It's not to say Russel is Eddie Murphy, you know?So to say that Aamir is a nobody outta the subcontinental...well...I think Russel isn't really much either...in any continent. He has his audience, but it's a target audience. A lot of my American friends, whites included, don't know who Russel Peters is.But I can assure you, any desi friend, aunty, uncle, grandpa, all over the world will know who Aamir Khan is.
In 2007, Peters was the first comedian to sell out Toronto's Air Canada Centre,[17] selling more than 16,000 tickets in two days for the single show. He ended up selling over 30,000 tickets nationally over the two-day sales period. He broke a UK comedy sales record at London's O2 Arena when he sold over 16,000 tickets to his show in 2009.[18] His show in Sydney, Australia on 15 May 2010 had an audience of 13,880, making it the largest stand-up comedy show in Australian history.[19] Peters' performances on May 5-6, 2012 in Singapore also set attendance records for a single stand-up comedian at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.[20]
While comedians may not have as wide of an audience as movie stars, they're completely different forms of entertainment, Russell definitely has a far larger diverse audience from all over the world than Aamir, who is mainly only known to desi populations. So yes, outside of desi circles, Aamir is a nobody, and when a non-desi in the west hears the name Amir Khan, they think of the boxer, if at all they've heard of the name.
