1984 riots: Sikh body files plaint against Amitabh Bachchan in Australia
The fresh complaint, which was lodged with Commonwealth attorney-general senator George Brandis on February 11, urges investigation and prosecution of Bachchan for inciting and instigating violence.

JALANDHAR: A criminal complaint has been filed against Amitabh Bachchan in Australia seeking action against the actor for his alleged role in inciting and instigating violence against the Sikh community in Delhi following Indira Gandhi's assassination in November 1984. The complaint has been filed by Sikhs for Justice group just ahead of the actor taking up the role of TV commentator during India-Pakistan match to be played at the ICC Cricket World Cup beginning in Adelaide on February 15.

The fresh complaint, which was lodged with Commonwealth attorney-general senator George Brandis on February 11, urges investigation and prosecution of Bachchan for inciting and instigating violence. International Criminal Court Act 2002 has also been invoked in the complaint that is supported by witnesses Ajmer Singh Randhawa and Delhi resident Babu Singh Dukhia on behalf of widows, victims and survivors of violence that ensued after Gandhi was killed by her Sikh bodyguards.

It is pertinent to mention here that a similar complaint filed in Australia with the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions in October 2011 had failed to attract any action and was rendered infructuous after Bachchan returned from there. At that time, he was in Australia for shooting Hollywood movie 'Great Gatsby' co-starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

"Commonwealth has extra-territorial jurisdiction over crimes against humanity and genocide committed anywhere in the world," said SFJ legal advisor Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.

Initially, Congress and its politicians had claimed that the US courts held no jurisdiction at all in such complaints, but had then started appearing through their counsels. US-based lawyer of Indian origin, Ravi Batra has been successfully defending them so far.

i read an article recently which says how superstar Amitabh Bachchan provoked the rioters in 1984 Anti-Sikh riots...if its true then SHAME on him..and wonder why there is no case lodged on him...

Following Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's assassination by her Sikh bodyguards Satwant Singh and Beant Singh, India erupted in riots against Sikhs in 1984. Reminiscing the sad memories of hate crime against Sikhs Jagdish Kaur, prime witness in 1984 anti- Sikh riots said, "I watched live relay on Doordarshan and saw Amitabh Bachchan raising his arm and shouting the slogan, 'khun ka badla khun sae laengae' (Blood for blood) two times...

Yes.

Anyone has seen their website and Facebook pages? They do not even recognise Sikhs as Indian citizens. They talk of India as a separate oppressive country that is holding Sikhs hostages.

They even take support from Pakistan against India.

I know this charge was brought up by this group only in 2008. Why were they sleeping for all those years?

This logically makes no sense. Doordarshan was the only channel at that time. Everybody used to watch it. Impossible that someone like Amitabh Bachchan said such a serious thing on TV and nobody knew.

They have no proof, no evidence, no witness except one who made this claim in 2008.

How can something on national TV have only 1 witness? And how come that witness never brought up this charge earlier?

I remember when this news came up 6 years ago, online even Sikhs were surprised. But one said that if this helped them bring more attention to the cause then so be it.

There is no book, thesis and article nor any personal account by Sikhs on 1984 that means role of AB or any film star shouting slogans to incite mobs.

My own parents are Sikhs and narrowly escaped death at that time. I asked them if it was true and they also said they never heard of it before.

HS Phoolka who has been fighting case for Sikhs killed in 1984 also said there was no evidence of this act. He did not endorse these claims.

This organisation had pressurised HS Phoolka also but he didn't relent. This is why they rant against him too.

It is a pro Khalistan group with sole intention to make Sikhs feel India is not for them.

They have written a a lot against Gandhi, Tagore and past figures too, alleging they were anti Sikh.

Therefore whatever they say, I do not believe them at face value.

They now want all killers free and want to paint them as martyrs. It is a very controversial and debatable issue.

I know a lot more about them but do not want to elaborate.

All I know is that even strongest critics of AB and Gandhis never alleged his involvement in this. Neither any independent media also.

He was such a big public figure then. Who would be this stupid to say such BS on TV? His own mother is a Sikh!

He did clarify he was not involved after this news spread too much. Many Sikh organisations supported him. Only this one group and its followers still hang on to the allegation.

These people are no different from those so called Hindu Jagruti sites that allege Khans to be jihadis, ISI agents and having terrorist linkages.

So I take such stuff with not just pinch but dollops of salt.

Good.

Although I'd much rather they dig in to investigate about what happened subsequently to those horrible people bombing Harimandar Sahib. Give justice to the Sikh families who had their houses and shops and taxis burnt. The Sikh families who lost their loved ones in the riots, who had their daughters raped, their sons killed or kidnapped, never to be heard of again, during and prior to the riots. And there has never in the past, and to this date, been any findings, forget any investigations on this.

This is exactly why I never identify myself as an Indian. Ethically I'm Punjabi, but I refuse to identify with a country whose govt. inflicted genocide on my people, and who continuosly denies the fact.

@ranbirs

That was State reaction to Bhindranwale's activities. Bluestar was a tactical mistake on Indira's part.

But was it right on Bhindranwale's part to use Golden Temple as hideout?

All Sikhs do not endorse his acts.

I personally consider it a colossal blunder by both sides.

Bluestar was a reaction to anti State acts of Bhindranwale and his extremist group.

Anyway SIT on 1984 is on now.

Khalistanis are not innocent either. Rather other Sikhs had to pay the price for the acts of few.

Khalistanis hand in glove with Pakistani separatist groups says a lot about their intentions.

I am all for justice for riot victims. But Khalistan? Nope.

^ I literally didn't even mention anything about Khalistan :| Just about the riot victims getting justice so dunno what you're on about.

Um, how can you prove Bhindranwale used it as a hideout? How can anyone for that matter? It's a place of worship, he worshipped there, he did seva, he was part of the sangat. So what did you expect, him to be standing outside watching Harimandar Sahib get attacked? Get outta here 🥱

Even Sikhs know he was using Golden Temple as headquarters.

Watching Harmander Sahib attacked?

Hello! The attack happened due to him! They targeted him. Not like attacking the shrine was State agenda.

I brought in Khalistan because the group that filed this charge is a Khalistani group. And you said you do not identify yourself as Indian which is exactly the language Khalistanis use.

What crap. Amitabh's Mother was Sikh. I don't believe Ab Sr. would have said something like this.
