'Roy' review: Not even Ranbir or Jacqueline can save this pretentious snoozefest!

Friday, 13 February 2015 - 3:28pm IST | Place: Mumbai | Agency: dna

Film: ROY

Film: ROY
Starring: Arjun Rampal, Jacqueline Fernandez & Ranbir Kapoor
Directed by: Vikramjit Singh
Rating: *

WHAT'S IT ABOUT:

There's a scene in Roy where Arjun Rampal says, "Pata nahin yeh film kaise ban gayi?" After seeing the film, everyone walking out of cinema halls will be wondering the same. Here's the story (or the lack of it) of successful film director Kabir Grewal (Rampal) who begins work on his next venture, which is based on a mysterious thief named Roy (Kapoor). The make-believe Roy is out for his next big heist involving a painting that will fetch him over 200 million dollars. The diversion in the screen hero's objective happens when he begins to fall for the owner of that painting, Tia (Fernandez). The same happens with the film's Casanova director Grewal when he gets emotionally embroiled with a young filmmaker Ayesha Amir (also Fernandez) while he is shooting his movie. The two tracks run parallel with both the protagonists helping one another thereby leading to the eventual culmination.

WHAT'S HOT:

It's an interesting concept - to have a film within a film, where the creator of a character and the character itself facing the same challenges and confrontations. But that's where it all ends. Debut-making director Vikramjit Singh seems so enamored by the idea itself that he's forgotten the basic rule of storytelling - every idea needs a structure and soul. Cinematographer Himman Dhamija and costume designer Niharika Singh try to add a certain degree of credence to this lifeless offering but their efforts are sadly wasted in this colossal disaster.

WHAT'S NOT:

Roy will stun your senses - because there hasn't been a film this boring, this ridiculous and this pretentious since the time you can remember. Singh stretches his idea so much that after a point, you start wondering if this is a film at all. The characters look defeated and devoid of any purpose. The screenplay is simply an amalgamation of scenes with no connect and no sense. At a time when Hindi films are finally coming of age, you have a film that not just pretends to be intellectual but is absolutely unbearable. It is shocking because this film is a result of collective and experienced talents like Bhushan Kumar (producer),Ranbir Kapoor and Arjun Rampal - did no one see this coming? There isn't a single high' note in the film - in fact, the lows keep charting new heights scene after scene until it finally ends and you want to thank your stars for that. The songs of Roy are huge chartbusters but in the film, they look lost and highly misplaced. Suddenly, a Malaysian street singer is seen crooning the Punjabi song Chiitiyan Kalaiyaan' as Jacqueline storms out of character and dances wildly as if she is competing for Nach Baliye. The Sooraj Dooba' club number has tranquil moments of Ranbir on the beach, as if they desperately wanted to make him a part of the song. As for the soulful Yaara Re' - we can almost imagine Bhushan Kumar pulling it out of Aashiqui 3 and thrusting it into this film. We also wonder why and how Ranbir Kapoor's role can be justified as a dynamic' (another word for special) appearance - he's present throughout the film. Except that he has one confused look (with dark circles) throughout, as if he is asking himself one question all along, "What the hell am I doing in this film?" Arjun Rampal looks disinterested (perhaps the need of his character?) and Jacqueline Fernandez is so consistent that both the parts she plays look and feel the same. She needs to be careful about her close-ups where she looks puffed-up mostly.

WHAT TO DO:

Roy is boring, exhausting and pretentious - save your money and time by staying away.

Just saw it and in hindsight even a root canal operation would not have been as painful as sitting through this snoozefest. The pace is excruciatingly slow and for the most part the audience has no clue what exactly is happening in the movie and what the hell the story is trying to convey. Arjun is decent though most of his screentime is spent in smoking. Jacqueline is like Katrina Beta version, but with more acting talent. Ranbir is completely wasted in his "dynamic appearance" with just one expression on his face. They could have stuck his mask on some random dude and gotten the same result. The songs are the only saving grace but they don't save the film nearly enough and you still want to blow your brains out by the time intermission arrives. Go for this movie only if you want to experience time dilation and see how 2.5 hours can feel like 5 or more.

DON'T WATCH THIS FILM! save your money. This is the worst film I have ever seen! Not even a single character is portrayed well. No story at all. I'm so much confused that still can't understand what the f**k actually happened. What's the relation between Roy n Kabir? Is Roy only a character written by Kabir?🥱 You'll not feel anything for any character.Everything is so confusing. And yes! Rampal and Jacky can't act! Looked like even they had no idea what they were doing. This film promotes smoking at its best. In each n every f**king scene Kabir is smoking! Uggh! Worst worst! And still can't understand why RK chose to be a part of this crapfest? Even you're RK fan, don't watch it! It will bore U to death.🥱

Editor's note: Consider this to be something of a running commentary of what happened during the opening show of Roy in a suburban theatre in Mumbai. The theatre was packed and a sizeable percentage of the crowd had availed complimentary tickets. Although some plot points and character details are revealed, there are no spoilers in this commentary. None of the "overheard" quotes are fictional.

Opening credits: "Ranbir Kapoor in a dynamic role." Ok then.

Comedian Cyrus Broacha is interviewing Kabir Grewal (Arjun Rampal) on his upcoming film. So that's what Bollywood thinks of entertainment journalists?

Overheard: "Yeh Cyrus Rajeev Masand ban raha he kya?"

Kabir sits down to write his film script, on a typewriter, wearing a fedora, drinking whisky, smoking cigarettes. Unleash your inner Gonzo, beta!

Note to writers facing writers block: it seems TV news is more exciting than sex these days. Certainly more inspirational. No wonder our population is reducing.

Courtesy: Facebook

This is the beginning of Gonzo Grewal's script: "Guns, Pt III, Int...ROY, Intense, brooding, stoic." Cut to Ranbir Kapoor, in a car. He does not look intense or brooding. He looks like he's got a tummy ache.

Guns, Pt I was apparently shot in Afghanistan. Is Gonzo Grewal partially modelled on Kabir Khan? If yes, this will be the second film Khan has inspired that has Ranbir in the cast (the first was Ayan Mukerji's Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani).

Gonzo Grewal to waiter at bar: "Macallan with three ice cubes. Three, ok?" Yeah, because it's the number of ice cubes that makes Scotch whisky tick. Idiot.

Overheard (after seeing the art that Roy is going to steal because it costs $120 million): "Let's send Mitali's crayon drawings to Ranbir Kapoor. One percent of 120 million bhi chalega."

Really worried about what qualifies as "drunk" in director Vikramjit Singh's book. This woman (who has supposedly drunk too much) is so knocked out, even puking doesn't wake her up. This is more like a date rape drug at work than alcohol.

Ayesha Aamir (Jaqueline Fernandez) has to be the only indie filmmaker to have the budget to live in a hotel that's swanky enough for a big budget masala director. She also has tattoos that magically disappear.

Details to clue you in on Ayesha being "quirky": she reads books in bars, wears necklaces on her thigh, beads on her wrist. That she looks like a model and we see next to nothing of her film or filmmaking? Minor details.

Overheard: "Jaqueline ka double role hai."
"Uska pata nahi par lipstick ka toh pukka double role hai."

Is Ayesha doing a bad fusion of ballet and Bharatnatyam on the beach a coded message to Gonzo, telling him she's flexible? Because that's the only interpretation that would make this a prelude to sex.

Overheard: "Oy yaar, love scene kyun cut kiya?"
"Do pappi dikhaya hai. Control kar apne aap ko."

Roy/Ranbir shoots blanks. Gonzo/Arjun hits balls. #NeverForgetFreud

Gonzo is faced with writer's block again. He pours water over himself. Because hell, if Arjun Rampal in a wet T-shirt doesn't inspire you, what will?

Overheard: "Why is this all happening in Malaysia?"
"Maybe it's Malaysia only in Kabir's head. Maybe it's actually Borivli National Park."

Why exactly did Anupam Kher accept this role? Was it because he got to stay in the hotel room that's supposed to be his home.

So there is something that can make Arjun Rampal look unattractive: a full beard. Good trivia, bad for Roy.

Overheard: "Maine kaha tha MSG dekhtey hain. Par nahin, tum logo ko Ranbir Kapoor ki aarti utarni thi na?"

Overheard: "I think I might just have a chance with Ranbir. If Katrina sits through this film, she's definitely dumping him."

Gonzo Grewal is buying a box of cigars for his dad, who has had six heart attacks already. So that if Dad isn't on his deathbed, they can just drive him to it with a little cigar smoke?

Ayesha: I saw your film.
Gonzo: How did you like it?
(Ayesha hugs Gonzo.)
Best way to avoid saying what you thought of a film. Director Vikramjit Singh should be wary of every hug he gets.

Detective Wadia (Rajit Kapoor) attempting to be discreet in Paris: wearing hat and trench coat, using vintage binoculars. Clearly taking his tips from Inspector Clouseau. When in Paris, do as Pink Panther does.

Two people in the cinema start arguing when one claims the other is sitting in their seat. After a few minutes, an usher comes and tells them to take it outside.
One random audience member: "No, no. Please go on. You guys are much more entertaining than what's happening in the film."

Cyrus asks Gonzo about Guns III: "Audience ki kya expectations honi chahiye?"
Audience response in the theatre: "Third class." "Gutter." "Watch India-UAE instead."

Movie review: It's appalling Roy made it to the cinemas

Rohit Khilnani February 13, 2015 | UPDATED 17:18 IST

Roy

Cast: Arjun Rampal, Ranbir Kapoor and Jacqueline Fernandez

Director: Vikramjit Singh.

Rating:

Poster of Roy
Roy was supposed to be a romantic thriller but there is nothing romantic or thrilling in it!

It's the story of Kabir (Arjun Rampal) a commercial filmmaker who is working on his next film Guns (part three).

His working style is very unique. The film is about to start but he is just smoking and staring at his typewriter, he has not even written one line of his film. He is busy drinking, smoking, thinking, walking, swimming but not writing or doing anything constructive to make his film happen. The famous Casanova makes headlines wherever he lands, not for his work but for the number of girls he has dated. Girlfriend number 23 is Ayesha (Jacqueline Fernandez) who is also a filmmaker and also happens to shoot her next film Malacca Diaries around the same time.

As you are watching Kabir and Ayesha's story, which is not easy to understand things get more complicated. By the side you are also watching his film in which Roy (Ranbir Kapoor) is the hero and lady opposite him is also Jacqueline Fernandez. That's the story we saw in the promos in which Roy will steal some famous artwork. Two silly stories run simultaneously and you are left confused.

Every film has some moments you enjoy but Roy has none! Not once does Kabir takes his direction seriously but his film is made and is also a super-hit. Somewhere behind the scenes Ayesha's film is also ready and she wins an international award for the best foreign language film because Kabir was on the jury.

In so many long scenes you just see one actor at a time doing nothing! You want the film to move but it just doesn't.

Terrible idea to cast Arjun Rampal, he is just not convincing in the role of a filmmaker! Leading lady Jacqueline Fernandez looks gorgeous but that we knew even before Roy released, the poor writing doesn't give her anything to do. The best talent of the lot Ranbir Kapoor is wasted in this film and how! A star his level better have a good reason to do Roy!

The best part of the film is the music but the songs come so abruptly and are totally out of place for anyone to enjoy.

I'm told releasing a film is not easy. One has to have a good story, get the cast in place, and convince a producer to back it and then get a studio to release it. After all kinds of checkpoints it's appalling that this film has made it to the theatres

The ApunKaChoice movie review of Roy. The best thing that can be said about director Vikramjit Singh's debut film Roy is that it has an interesting concept at its heart. Attempted partly as a film within a film in which the boundaries between reality and fiction tend to blur, Roy might have been a heck of a watch had the director not made the characters sleepwalk through the sluggish screenplay.

Almost all the characters in Roy look bored of life, and that feeling unfortunately rubs off on the viewer as well. The story unravels at a labored pace and for a good 156 mins to put even the seasoned insomniacs into a sleep mode.

Arjun Rampal plays Kabir, a filmmaker with a reputation for romantic flings, so much so that the media now refers to his girlfriends not by their names but numbers. He fashions stories around the character of an art thief named Roy (Ranbir Kapoor), who -- we're told by a quaint investigating officer (Rajit Kapoor with a pocket watch) -- could be one of the smartest thieves in history, having stolen paintings even from the Louvre in Paris.

Kabir runs out of inspiration while typewriting a new story, and goes to Malaysia to start shooting and to seek inspiration. The inspiration comes in the lovely form of another filmmaker Ayesha (Jacqueline Fernandez) whom Kabir falls for and woos.

Meanwhile, Roy, the thief, lands in Malaysia to steal a prized painting from the superrich Tia (Jacqueline Fernandez again).

Slowly and creepily, the story turns into a romantic thriller, with a few twists that one can see coming.

Roy has some awesome visuals captured by the DoP Himman Dhamija. It has a catchy soundtrack, even though the songs don't necessarily add to the narrative. What Roy lacks is a coherent, moving story at its core. The characters sketches aren't etched along definitive lines and after a while the movie looks more like a mood piece with abstract parallels between the two love tracks.

Arjun Rampal displays a few flashes of acting brilliance here and there. Ranbir Kapoor spurs curiosity but leaves you hanging high and dry. He looks decidedly disinterested, bored and sleepy.

Jacqueline Fernandez looks pretty but her Ayesha and Tia look like the same person styled differently.

Vikramjit Singh is clearly not a votary of melodrama and prefers to dabble on the undercurrents that play out between the layers of a story. The characters in Roy remain by and large muted. It's a strange, slow, somnolent film that will be liked by only a few with an acquired taste.

Hahaha...knew the movie would be boring but didn't expect it to be this bad. The line..."Do kisses dikha toh diye..control kar apne aap ko" Sounds like a typical college bunch! 😆

On a lighter note: A couple of my friends who are working in a small town atm went to watch this movie because of Ranbir. After watching it they were like..no wonder Ranbir abandoned and refused to promote this bore fest. 😆

P.S. Autocorrect changes Ranbir to Rabbit. 😆

Atleast it got a decent opening thanks to music and Ranbir. Probably still gonna flop though.
T Series paid Ranbir lots of $$$$ for this one na? Otherwise why would he sign this garbage 😆
