Roy Has Good Opening At Multiplexes
Friday 13 February 2015 12.00 IST
Box Office India Trade Network

Roy has taken a good opening at multiplexes of around 40-45%. The initial at multiplexes is the best of the year so far as far as the morning shows are concerned. Although that does not mean much as the films released so far have not opened well. The opening is better than Baby although that film did better in the evening.

The presence of Ranbir Kapoor as well as the music has proved a big advantage for the film. The opening is pretty good in Mumbai and good in Delhi and East Punjab.

The single screen opening will probably not be as strong as multiplexes but if the film can show just the normal evening growth it should come out with the best opening day of the year. The opening of Roy is the first positive at the box office in 2014.

Roy review: Despite Ranbir, Arjun, Jacqueline, the film shows hotness can bore you to death

Spider-Man fans, turn away as we butcher your favourite quote for a great cause.
*Deep breath*
With great hotness, comes great power. Like the power to stop the audience from yelling 'W*F' even as they witness something mind-numbing and stupid. Arjun Rampal spends two-and-half-hours proving this fallacy right in Roy.
Roy opens showing filmmaker Kabir Grewal (Rampal) giving an interview to Cyrus Broacha about his new film (Kabir's, that is). He is in a black blazer, black pants, white shirt and a black fedora. Full props to the film's stylists for lavishing so much thought and attention to the wardrobe of a man who only has to keep his jawline unharmed in order to look hot enough to give ladies and gentlemen so inclined hot flushes in the peak of Delhi winters.
Kabir quickly proceeds to do a series of extremely nonsensical things that would render an average man unemployable and un-dateable to the world. However, when he takes a shower, his similarity with average mortals ends and you realise why he can get away with some of the worst pick-up lines ever. Kabir slips into a bathrobe, puts the fedora back on his head and sits down to write at his desk. He then pours himself a whisky, arranges a box of cigarettes like a child obsesses over a new box of crayons. Finally, he starts typing. On a typewriter. Unlike everyone in the modern era who spends half their lives keeping back-ups of back-ups of important documents on hard drives etc, Kabir taps into his inner Ernest Hemingway and rubbishes the perishable quality of paper and ink. Sitting in a room that looks like an antique shop selling over priced Ganeshas to foreigners, Kabir types his script.
Now, what's his film about? No one knows yet including the film's financier. All we know is that it's part of a franchise that is imaginatively titled "Gun". Gun I and Gun II were huge hits. This is Gun III and it is to be shot in Malaysia, of all places.
But early on in the shooting, the heavens weep and there's a tropical downpour -- probably because nothing of Rampal's torso was visible under the multiple layers of clothing. So Kabir cancels his shoot and decides to gift us mortals a glimpse of his torso by taking a dip in swimming pool. As he emerges from the pool, he spots a woman leaving the poolside. The sight of her bare female skin (framed by the straps of her rather modest swimsuit) stirs the adarsh bharatiya man in him. So he decides to stalk her.
Cue in Jacqueline Fernandes as Ayesha Aamir. She is an indie filmmaker from London, also shooting in Malaysia. For the first and last time in filmi history, an independent film has the budget to keep the director in the same hotel as the one in which a hotshot masala director is staying. Since she is intelligent and indie, Ayesha sits alone in the bar, with a book. She also chews her lips and occasionally her fingers to make sure there's not item in the sexy checklist left un-ticked.
"I don't like drinking alone," says Kabir as he strides over to Ayesha, and offers a glass of wine to her.
Ayesha throws him a "Phone mein WhatsApp, Facebook nahin hai kya?" look, but he is unfazed. Then they chat.
Since Kabir looks like Arjun Rampal, there's nothing creepy about him following a single woman around a hotel. So that's how a romance kicks off.
Simultaneously, there's another plot unfolding. This has a thief Roy, played by Ranbir Kapoor, the Manoj Kumar wig edition. He has to find the other half of a French painting. It's a badly drawn scene of a riverside city has oddly-shaped men and women, a dog and the colouring skills of a four-year-old. It's also priceless and there's another half of this painting, which is owned by a woman. So Roy sets off to pursue her and get the painting.
The woman in question is Tia, Jacqueline Fernandes trying to look like Marilyn Monroe with the help of a retro bob and red lipstick. We suspect she is a professional sea-gazer, or perhaps a balcony-admirer because we don't see her doing anything else. If these are indeed professions, we'd also like to sign up for standing at verandahs overlooking Malaysian rainforests while wearing deep lipstick.
While it is entirely possible to walk into that house, pick up the painting and leave, Roy decides to add some drama to it. So he pursues the woman, does the dirty with her (but not so dirty that her curls are dislodged or her lipstick gets smudged) and then makes a clean getaway after stealing the painting from her.
So what is going in Roy? Are we watching Seeta Aur Geeta, the New York Fashion Week edition? Is this the modern ambitious, multi-tasking woman's guide to bagging two hot men at the same time? Are we seeing an elaborate conspiracy to make Ranbir Kapoor look like a gingerbread man by giving him that terrible hairstyle and placing him alongside the gorgeous Rampal? Is it an ironical commentary on how bad your choice of films is? You have to sit through Roy to figure that one out. I suggest french fries, a empathetic friend on WhatsApp and Candy Crush Saga to be kept within reach to survive its running time.
Since his brief was 'Bollywood thriller', the Roy's cinematographer decided to keep colours and light out of the frames. Every frame of the film is a muddy grey, the colour of the monsoon sky in Mumbai. After a bit, if you are in Mumbai like me, you start panicking about your laundry, four months in advance.
Kapoor was asked to re-live John Abraham's one expression from Jism and he dutifully obliged. Rampal was asked to not smile too much and develop a stiff upper lip, literally. So he did. Fernandes should pay half her salary to the lipstick company, because her lip colour did more work that her face in the film.
More mysterious than the twist in the film (which anyone with a single functioning brain cell can predict within minutes of the film's opening) are the dialogues in Roy. Here's a sample. This is what two people who have sex with each other in two days say to each other by way of small talk.
Man to woman doing yoga: "Hmmm, yoga..."
Woman: "Haan, yoga...".
It's difficult to pick what is Roy's greatest achievements. But somewhere near the top of the list is the fact that director Vikramjit Singh has managed to make a film that has two of Bollywood's most goodlooking heroes, and leave a woman stalking random people's honeymoon pictures on Facebook mobile. To quote Kapoor in Roy, "Yeh kahani aisay khatam hogi, mein nahin janta tha."

Roy movie review: What is Ranbir Kapoor doing in a movie like this?

roy movie review, roy review, ranbir kapoor, ranbir kapoor in roy, ranbir's roy movie review, roy, roy movie, arjun rampal, jacqueline fernandez Roy movie review; I haven't seen something as fuzzy and dreary as Roy' in a long time : just what is Ranbir Kapoor doing in a movie like this?
Star Cast: Arjun Rampal, Jacqueline Fernandez, Ranbir Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Shernaz Patel, Rajit Kapoor
Director: Vikramjit Singh
I've just finished watching a film about, um, what exactly was it about? And that's not the only question I have about Roy', which remains a mystery wrapped in an enigma till the end, for all the wrong reasons.
A snail would be faster than the pace at which we are introduced to the characters. Namely, one number masked thief (Ranbir Kapoor in an extended cameo), who has a thing for expensive art. A filmmaker (Arjun Rampal) with a roving eye and a bad case of block-itis, who bashes away at his typewriter : no, he's not so poor he can't afford a laptop- there are many apple-shaped gadgets strewn about in the movie- it's just, you know, so retro-cool to bash away at actual keys. Another filmmaker (Jacqueline Fernandez) who possesses the most eye-catching set of rings, and who is to be seen reading deeply when not frolicking on the beach.
With me, so far? Good, because this is where it starts getting murky. There turns up a Fernandez look-alike, this one being deeply scarlet-lipped, as opposed to the pastel shades of the first one. A painting is stolen. A bunch of people show up, say stuff and leave : Rajit Kapoor as an unintentionally hilarious detective, Anupam Kher as the eternal paternal figure, Patel as the only one struggling to keep a straight face. And we wait and wait for something to happen.
Nothing does. The good-looking actors loll about in good-looking locations (mostly in Malaysia, and we aren't surprised when the leading lady bestows fulsome praise upon the country, which will presumably lead to much tourist traffic) and talk, talk, talk in sombre tones. Verily, it is a gabfest, and you want to applaud"finally, a movie in which people, you know, talk, but you realize soon enough that all that chatter is empty.
So here are my questions. Who wrote this? Who is it for? The mystery and the enigma, which are set up lazily and obviously, never really take root. I haven't seen something as fuzzy and dreary as Roy' in a long time : just what is Ranbir Kapoor doing in a movie like this?

Roy Review

57 mins agoby Indicine Team13 Comments4 min read

Roy is a difficult film to judge. We all have seen the trailers being filled with Ranbir Kapoor's screen presence but then media has been constantly reporting that he has a minor role in the film. And it is because he has a guest appearance in the film, we can't help but feel less excited about it. If it was his film through and through, we'd all be hooked and booked. But unfortunately, inspite of the music being a big hit, Roy just doesn't have too much buzz going on about it. The trailers have been decent but not earth-shattering. So does Roy exceed all our expectations?

Story: Kabir Grewal (Arjun Rampal) is a film director who has a casanova image and has apparently slept with 22 girls so far according to entertainment journalists. He goes to Malaysia in search of his next story and chances upon another director called Ayesha (Jacqueline 1) and soon through their conversations they start falling in love. There's another parallel track going on of Roy (Ranbir) who is also the lead character in Kabir's story. Roy is a strange mysterious character who doesn't reveal the cards close to his chest. Roy is slowly falling in love with Tia (Jacqueline 2) in Kabir's story. Things get convoluted when Roy and Kabir converge into one.

Director Vikramjit Singh has clearly tried to copy the look of a stylish Hollywood thriller in his debut feature Roy with the story of a normal noir classic English thriller. But the problem is, Vikramjit has the germ of a very interesting idea but his skills as director Vikramjit is not able to matchup to the vision of the writer Vikramjit. Roy therefore turns out to be a very confused film for the viewer. It looks and feels stylish because of the way Vikramjit has shot it but it counts for nothing if the story isn't fulfilling enough. It would have made a lot of sense if Vikramjit had written a book rather than make a film with this story of his.

Roy, somehow becomes palatable overcoming the vast boring portions and the confused plot because of the slick treatment of its cinematography. Roy feels huge because of the grandeur of the scale of sets and camerwork is also excellent. The costume design is stylish. The editing should have been crisper as Roy gets into the boring zone a bit too many times because of the 2.5 hours plus length.

The music of Roy is another redeeming part of the film. It has already become a huge hit and the songs do actually stay with you. Sooraj Dooba Hain is hummable and you feel like getting up and hitting the dance floor. Ankit Tiwari continues his good form with the melodious and moody Tu Hai Ke Nahi. Chittiyan Kalaiyaan is very energetic and the tempo of the song is high. The background score is also pretty decent.

Acting: Ranbir Kapoor is the headliner of the film even though he has a sizeably less screen time than Arjun Rampal. Unfortunately, Ranbir tries too hard to be dark and mysterious, and ends up having one expression throughout the film no matter what situation. He's off form. And so are the main two leads - Arjun Rampal and Jacqueline. Arjun tries his best to act like a suave in-demand director who has chicks falling for his charm every 20 minutes, but alas he's not Milind Soman. Jacqueline has two roles in the film and she gives a lesson in acting two different characters the exact same way. If not for the different makeup and costume design for both the characters, we wouldn't know that she was playing two characters.

Conclusion: Roy has a good premise, a good idea, a good vision but the director is not able to live up to his own vision as a director. Roy is too intelligent for itself and ends up being a boring, confused film with a convoluted plot that is neither a good thriller nor a good love story. You can watch the film for the music videos and the gorgeous cinematography because otherwise it is too much of a slog to survive the duration of the film.

Ranbir coming on screen after long and hit music worked wonders for the opening.

But movie is getting reviews which say it is slow and boring which means audience will reject it completely. Hence, will drop big from Monday.

Opening expected : 30 crores Lifetime total expected : 60 crores
