Synopsis: The film begins with the brooding and serious film maker, Kabir played excellently by Arjun Rampal as he types the story of the con-man Roy, who goes around and charms his way to get his hands on valuable paintings from around the world. However, the police is left baffled about who actually stole the paintings and this intrigues Kabir. The film shifts to Malaysia where Roy is currently focusing his current robbing acts. Jacqueline delivers her what can be summed up as the best act in her career till date. She is a bubbly aspiring actress on one hand, named Tia and a no-nonsense film director on the other. Is Kabir able to track Roy's progress and finally capture him? Is Roy apparently too smart for Kabir and even the cop, Rajat Kapoor, (who re-lives the Byomkesh Bakshi days much to the glee of the audience) is what the film is all about.
The chemistry between Jacqueline and Ranbir is more intense than the one between Jacqueline and Arjun himself. What sets the mood is the superb cinematography by Himman Dhamija and the songs that are based in the scenic Malaysia.
Performances: Ranbir is back after Yeh Jawaani hai Deewani and his fans will surely love him in this avatar, which is a far cry from his Bunny' role in the aforementioned film. He is serious and sly, as a con-man and not many actors would have carried off the role with such lan as him. He is very much in the skin of the character of the mysterious man Roy and this aura of mystery is what makes the film entertaining and make even that 156 minutes not seem too long too. Jacqueline has tried to show her different roles with just the change of her hairdo. But, we would have loved to see her actually do a lot more than just changing her hair styles. Arjun Rampal, is on a high since Rajneeti and Rock On and his hiatus continues. Though we get to see him puff in every frame, or hide his chiseled sharp face under a fedora, but he provides the narrative that requires all the suspense to increase your interest. What is the main intention of Arjun's character and what game plan he has in mind is for you to find!
Analysis: Roy is a superb thriller dished out to the audience by debutant director Vikramjit Singh and he has made sure that he does not bore us with any clichd whodunit nuances, for which he deserves lots of kudos. Keeping the suspense element in mind, Himman Dhamija also makes sure that all the scenes blend in with the background and extensive use of dark shades give the movie all the class it needs. Songs were already chartbusters, like "Sooraj Dooba hain", "Tu Hai ki nahi" and "Chittiyan Kalaiyan" popular among the young folk. Wait for the last to get that extra little kick and exit the theatre with the satisfaction of having got a new director who can make an original movie!
