Alone
By Bollywood Hungama News Network, 16 Jan 2015, 13:27 hrs IST
Rating: 2 |
The horrex (horror - sex) genre has been picking up steam of late with multiple films catering to this segment. Bhushan Patel, whose earlier tryst with the genre RAGINI MMS 2 proved to be pretty intriguing, returns with yet another film in the same genre with ALONE.

While the film is a remake of a Thai film by the same name, ALONE is the story of Sanjana (Bipasha Basu) who is forced to return to Kerala with her husband Kabir (Karan Singh Grover) after her mother meets with an accident. When Sanjana, the survivor between conjoined twins comes home after years, she is thrown face first into her old life which is both painful and haunting. In fact Sanjana's return not just brings back distant memories, but it seems as if it also brought back her twin sister Anjana's (Bipasha Basu) spirit whose presence is felt only by her. Continuing the dj vu scenario, Sanjana shares her plight with Kabir but he believes that it is merely love for her sister and the guilt of losing Anjana that is leading to these hallucinations. However, these delusions soon grow into spine tingling incidents bringing Sanjana at the verge of a breakdown. Kabir takes help from his psychiatrist friend Namit only to realize that it is rather beyond science. Is the existence of Anjana's spirit real or it is just a figment of Sanjana's fervent guilt loaded imagination, is what forms the rest of the story.

When you think you've seen the silliest and most bizarre film, you're surprised that there comes another one that squabbles for absurdity of the highest order. Bhushan Patel's ALONE fits that bill perfectly. You're told to believe in 'suspension of disbelief' and you're, like okay, I'll try, and then comes a ghost who personifies 'true love' and can make love as if the thirst will never be quenched. Huh!

The promos of ALONE promised horror garnished with ample sexual moments. Bhushan Patel's last film RAGINI MMS 2 didn't disappoint as far as the steamy-quotient is concerned but in ALONE there's absolutely no physical intimacy in the first half, while the second half does have its share of voluptuous kissing scenes, it's no match on what was promised by the promos. Even the horror scenes aren't any different or more horrifying from what you've seen in movies of this genre in the past.

ALONE is an adaptation of a Thai film by the same name. One needs to see the original to understand what different element did Bhushan Patel try and incorporate in his version. Did Mr. Patel try and Indianise it to suit the desi audience? But whatever he did or whatever the source material was, the end result is disturbing. As an audience you're left dumbfounded as to why should you be taken on such an incredulously stupid journey in the first place. The story of the conjoined sisters and their tryst with Love leaves a weird after taste. Paranormal experience of the silliest kinds.

In this badly lit film what stands out is Bipasha Basu who breathes in fire in a dead story. She smoulders with her erotic appeal, holds her own nicely in emotional, dramatic and romantic scenes. She's without a doubt a fantastic kisser, as she didn't hold anything back. All the actresses (barring Sunny Leone of course) can take kissing lessons from bindaas Basu. She deserves more engaging stories to display her wares. Karan Singh Grover makes a sprightly debut. He's not conscious of the
camera
at all. Considering he has done TV, he is high on emotional appeal. He has all the trappings of being a star but he needs to choose his films more wisely.

Music is one of the highlights of the film 'Katra Katra' by Ankit Tiwari is extremely soulful and saucily picturised. 'Awara' by Mithoon and 'Chaand Asmanon Se Lapata' by Jeet Ganguly are wonderful tracks too. Prakash Kutty's cinematography is excellent when it comes to shooting the songs but the dull lighting incorporated to highlight the horror mode dampens proceedings to an extent. Devendra Murdeshwar's editing is sloppy. Since the horror lacks the steam, the pace slackens further due to lazily cuts. Shagufta Rafique's dialogues are average. The locales in Kerala are breathtakingly beautiful and the big highlight of the film. VFX are decent but there's nothing extraordinary that stays in your mind.

On the whole, ALONE is a below average fare that has a commendable performance by Bipasha Basu. If you'd like to feast on Karan's sexy bare body or gape at Bipasha's prowess at kissing then ALONE has something for you to look forward to. If you want to be shit scared, then you need to skim through DVD collection of better horror films of the past.

Alone Movie review

Alone Movie review

Star Cast: Bipasha Basu, Karan Singh Grover, Zakir Hussain, Neena Gupta

Director : Bhushan Patel

A besotted wife, an over-busy husband, and a dark secret is bundled up and transported to a sprawling house in the Kerala backwaters. A locked outhouse opens one stormy night, and then..

The ingredients for a horror film are all there, but Alone' very quickly becomes a tussle between the scenes that want you to be scared and the sequences where you are supposed to slurp at all the eye candy: both the lead players are made to show acres of skin. In the face of smooth bare backs, and the rippling pecs and packs, what's a poor ghost to do?

Because that's what seems to haunt Sanjana (Bipasha Basu), a ghostly presence that won't let her in peace. Her return to her childhood home to meet her mother (Neena Gupta) brings back disturbing memories of a long lost sibling. And then start the squeaks, the creaking doors, and things that go bump.

There are a few mildly scary moments, but before the plot has a chance to build on those, it is made to scurry off to a waterfall to drench Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover. Or takes the action to bed, where things get hot and heavy. It gets to the point where you are not quite sure if the panting down to the pair burning up the sheets, or the aatma', waiting to make an entry?

Standard types start tumbling out. A healer with a couch in his office. A baba' who spouts mantras' and talks of aghori sadhus' and bhoot puranas'. A faithful family retainer who moans and groans. Bipasha Basu roams about in negligees and shorts, and tries very hard, but is altogether too manicured to pull off a scare. And the debutant Karan Singh Grover follows the script, but there's not much anyone can do when the pace is so staid that you want to tell the spirit to hurry it up, willya.

There really has to be a law against putting in songs in a horror film that wants us to take it seriously. As well as such priceless dialogues as : "isko extra sensory perception kehte hain". You don't say.

Film: Alone

Cast: Bipasha Basu, Karan Singh Grover, Zakir Hussain, Neena Gupta

Director: Bhushan Patel

Rating: *1/2

What's it about:

Scary is sexy. But sometimes scary can also be a lot of other things, especially when there is a lack of an exciting script, direction that brings nothing new to the table and a lead cast who behaves like they are shooting for a swimsuit calendar. Despite the seductive promos and skin show, Bhushan Patel's Alone is anything but sexy. We are introduced to conjoined twins Sanjana and Anjana (played by Bipasha) who fall for the same guy Kabir (Karan Singh Grover). Given the fact that they are literally joined to the hip or rather neck, they need to figure out a way where only one of them can have the boy. Out of the two, Sanjana manages to get Kabir while the twin sister dies in a freak surgery. On her return to their house, strange things start happening, like doors creaking, voices calling out names and some really bad make up and CGI stunts are attempted!

What's hot:

Alone is a remake of a Thai film of the same name. There are certain scenes that have been directly lifted from the original and Patel does manage to raise your curiosity in the beginning. A firm believer of more the cleavage better the draw, Patel showcases KSG in a Chippendale avatar with rock hard abs and pecs in full glory. Songs are melodious and the cinematography does a decent job of painting a beautiful canvas.

What's not:

Performances by the lead actors. While Karan shows off his oh-so-hot body, he will have to pull up his socks as far as acting is concerned. He may have a huge female fan following but that won't guarantee success in Bollywood. As for Bipasha, the sultry actress tries hard to look scared which makes her act not-so-believeable. Also, its irritating to see her cry in every other scene. Her chemistry with KSG is no doubt crackling but that may just not be enough to pull in crowd to the cinema halls. Lastly, and most importantly its the storyline which is disappointing. Neither gripping nor worth the long wait of that predictable climax, the film has a big dead give away even before the end credits start rolling.

What to do:

Even Bipasha and Karan's chemistry couldn't save the desi version of Thai flick Alone. If you're bored and someone is sponsoring your ticket then by all means watch this film just to kill your time.

Alone review: Weak story, dull protagonists, the film is a bore

Suhani Singh January 16, 2015 | UPDATED 15:44 IST

Dir: Bhushan Patel
Cast: Bipasha Basu, Karan Singh Grover, Sulabha Arya, Zakir Hussain and Neena Gupta
Rating: 4 Star Rating: Recommended

With films like Raaz 2, Aatma and Creature to her credit, it is safe to say that Bipasha Basu hearts horror and wouldn't mind the label of India's go-to horror actress. And so we have Alone, which has all the tropes of the genre: a big house in the middle of nowhere with electricity hassles, unoiled doors and swings hinges, a locked, rundown property with a ghost, individuals creeping up from behind and plenty of screams.

The filmmakers' big pitch to watch Alone is to see Bipasha Basu essaying identical, conjoined twins, Sanjana and Anjana. This interesting idea is wasted in rushed flashbacks which do nothing to show the close bond between the two. It doesn't help that the depiction of them being joined at the waist is awful and unconvincing. As far as we saw they had no sartorial troubles and wore separate clothes. All is hunky-dory in the sisters' life until a man enters to spoil their equation. Anjana is angry that Kabir, whom she loves, has chosen Sanjana over her. She wants him at all costs. After an operation to separate the two, Sanjana survives to live not-so-happily with her now busy husband Kabir (Karan Singh Grover) and Anjana dies.

When her mother's illness compels her to return to her family home in Kerala, Sanjana packs many tiny, satin night clothes and shorts, colourful dresses and pink lipstick and hair products to visit with her husband. It doesn't take long for things to turn a bit scary. Sanjana feels her sister's presence - who appears to have a breathing problem - but nobody believes her. Following a miscarriage and her worries being ignored, she is soon possessed by Anjana, who takes full advantage of the situation to seduce and make love (on top and inside of a car) to Kabir. It doesn't need to be said but Kabir likes this new, different side of Sanjana.

Not everyone may see the twist coming but what it does do is make a mockery of everything that preceded it. It raises many questions on why the filmmakers depicted the ghost as hostile in the first place. A weak story balancing on the shoulders of two dull protagonists, even the secondary characters cannot save Alone. Lord Ganesha and a mantra-reading baba make a cameo appearance to resolve the ghostly crisis but to no avail. A showdown ensues and someone ends up being alone. Ultimately, you won't be alone in thinking that the film is a bore

Alone review: Bipasha Basu brings to you the best comedy of the year

Sanjana (Bipasha Basu) is hot and unemployed - the first is a fact, the latter an assumption given how frequently she irons her hair in a day so that her hair remains poker straight and silky at any and every moment in her day - has perennially red cheekbones, and married. A few minutes into Alone, Sanjana's husband Kabir (Karan Singh Grover) has sung her a song, fed her a cake in colours matching her white dress and red lips and we realise why Sanjana's standard expression is so, well, constipated. The woman misses her husband, who is obviously working hard to pay for rent, cake et al. A potentially relationship-changing conversation between the couple is cut short when a phone call informs them that Sanjana's mother has had a bimaari that has left her speechless and paralysed neck down.

The couple hurry to Sanjana's hometown in Kerala's backwaters. It's at this point that the film decides to share that Sanjana had a conjoined twin named Anjana who has died. Anjana was a true match to Sanjana, saying things like 'hum kabhi juda nahi honge' as a ten-year-old. The two were nearly on the track of claiming the title of creepiest kids ever (maybe they watched the wingwoman-cum-daughter in Karan Johar's Kuch Kuch Hota Hai?): they listened to a musical box which plays a tune fit for a Ram Gopal Verma film, drew the infinity sign in sand like lovestruck teens and so on. When teenaged Sanjana developed a crush for Kabir, now her husband and back then a chubby boy who saves the twins from bullies in school, things start souring. Anjana too has a crush on Kabir. However, since Anjana wears specs and has a more visible upper lip hair growth, chubby Kabir chooses Sanjana. Soon after, he runs off to London for higher education.

Meanwhile, the twins grow up to become Bipasha Basus and herein lies the confusion. Anjana, with Bipasha's abs and legs can't fathom why Kabir would choose the Sanjana, also with Bipasha's abs and legs. We understand her confusion. It's inexplicable. Even more explicable is the fact that the conjoined sisters would risk life threatening surgery for Karan Singh Grover, but that's what happens. Kabir is the reason the two sisters go under the knife and post-separation, Anjana dies. Sanjana goes on to pursue a sex life with a man with no hair on his body and bulging veins and scorpion tattoos painted on his meatloaf arms.

In the tradition of Indian ghosts who have traditionally been thoroughbred socialists, choosing the taikhana over thehaveli, Anjana's ghost too picks the outhouse adjoining the pretty family home. Maybe because it gets boring in the backwaters, Spooky Anjana starts plotting an elaborate plan for revenge.

Number one: Show ghost face to Mum and knock her out.
Number two: Get sister to come home, with Kabir in tow. When they're here, possess sister's body because hey, what could be easier? They have the same abs and legs.

We're almost tempted to say, neatly done. Especially since Kabir appears to like the possessed Sanjana more, judging by his flared nostrils, bulging veins, and dilated pupils. And why shouldn't he? The possessed Sanjana treats him the way a good Bengali does a nice, fat piece of hilsa slathered in mustard sauce. Okay, not really; we actually chew the bones with much more grace than possessed Sanjana chews Kabir's mouth. Maybe Anjana was just trying to kick a smoking habit and mistook Kabir's face for nicotine gum. It's probably difficult to tell such things apart from the afterlife.

Then, like in all good Indian ghost films, there's a bai who looks sad, scared and suspicious. No, it's not because of the liquor ban in Kerala. She knows Anjana's floating around. A puja is done and sure enough, the ghostly Anjana reveals her face. Since it's India, she looks very white. The rest of Alone is about convincing ghostly Anjana to mind her own business and party with her own kind.

Director Bhushan Patel has put in everything we associate with Indian horror films in this movie. Lights flicker and go out, doors creak pointlessly, swings swing by themselves; a jobless professor shows up to help fight the ghost; days end faster than night; defective fans help ghosts announce their presence.

The two things missing: fear and the ghost. The ghost in this ghost film could make Rahul Gandhi proud: she makes fewer appearances than Gandhi did in Lok Sabha. This is probably because Basu, the high priestess of "horrex", Basu, needs to be in baby doll negligees and lace shorts. Net result: Alone could be the best comic film Bollywood churns out this year.

Box office capsule

Pluses:

Karan puts an honest act, couple of good songs

Minuses:

cliche writing, direction lacks intention, laughable performances by supporting cast

Critic Rating:

1/5

Business Rating:

2/5

Verdict:

Watch it for routine cliche horror film experience

Detailed Analysis:

Bipasha Basu stars in one horror film every quarter and still she gets to act in one after debacle of 'Aatma', and 'Creature'.

Film is remake of Thai horror flick. Two conjoint twins Anjana and Sanjana (both played by Bipasha Basu) fell in love with same guy Kabir (Karan Singh Grover). He left for London for higher studies and comes back after 10 years but sisters fight for this guy. We do not know which sister is ghost and who is married to Kabir and that is the suspense in the end. Kabir and Snajana are well settled in Mumbai but they rush back to haunted house in Kerala as her mother (Neena Gupta) meets with a fatal accident. Now how this couple fights with the ghost and there is one 'tantrik' and psychologist to help them.

Performance wise Bipasha Basu goes on with the flow and she seems to be confused between 'Creature', 'Aatma' and this one. She really needs reinvent her now. Karan delivers an honest performance but he is letdown by poorly written role and bad diction. Zakir Hussain and other supporting cast make you laugh unintentionally.

Film has couple of good songs but in such a tepid affair songs do not leave any mark. Editing is poor and cinematography is average. Background score is pathetic and makes things worse for audience. Story was good but poor dialogues and screenplay spoil the game. Art department and costume department are fairly good.

Director Bhushan Patel directed two successful sequels but this time he fails miserably as typical combo of horror and sex falls flat. Old formulas and poor performances let him down.

Film released today and will get 1000 screens which will enough for such film. Film has chances at box office as there is so much competition but no big film is there. And such films do find audience in smaller centers but will they turn up to watch another Bipasha starrer, is the million dollar question.

Go for this one if you can watch any horror film!

Movie Review: It's better to be alone than watch'Alone'

Movie : Alone

Critics Rating :

Cast : Bipasha Basu, Karan Singh Grover, Zakir Hussain, Neena Gupta

Director : Bhushan Patel

New Delhi: Imagine what all can be done if you are alone and have Rs 200 to spend. You can slurp a yummy cup of coffee at a lavish shop, you can enjoy a combo meal at many restaurants and you can gift yourself a cool stuff too. But if you decide to watch Bipasha Basu's Alone' with that sum of money, then you will only do yawn, see people around you and look for a reason to get horror-struck.

Horror queen Bipasha Basu this time tries to present something fresh in terms of both cast, yes I am talking about Karan Singh Grover who did his Bollywood debut with the film, and storyline which doesn't end the way it is expected.

Television actor Karan Singh Grover failed to grab enough given opportunities but succeeded in delivering a bodylicious show by simply flaunting six pack abs and biceps. But, when the need was to show expressions on emotional sequences, he failed to justify his existence in the film.

Opening with a frame focused on a tree and out house, film presents a story of two soul sisters (both characters played by Bipasha Basu) who fall in love with the same guy (character played by Karan Singh Grover) but betray each other to fetch love of their life. Ripping off the storyline of 2007 Thai movie, that presented two conjoined girls separated from each other amid desire to ferry their love, the film failed to deliver a substance.

Director Bhushan Patel, who has given hits like 1920: Evil Returns and Ragini MMS 2, tried much to cook a fresh dish on the base of 2007 Thai horror film of the same name but left things half baked. On one hand Patel showed his expertise with

camera

angles, lighting and horrific music. He did a brilliant job to create an ambience of dread, at least in parts. On the other hand, he delivered some repeated sequence to wreck his image as a perfectionist.

Alone is a love triangle that oscillates like a pendulum between past and present. But, the intrigue of tale, which seems predictable, turns out to be a point ahead where normal horror stories end.

Alone's music is the only thing that keeps you awake while its ghost force you to fall asleep. From Katra Katra to Awara all songs simply soothe ears and for some eyes too. The picturisation of songs turned out to be another major disappointment for viewers. Both the songs were revealing enough of human body, but giving more feel of a photo shoot via video.

Final verdict: The film is strictly for Bipasha fans and drastically fails to deliver anything. Watch it at your own risk or try something I mentioned in my first paragraph.
