Eighteen years ago, a single photograph captured the beginning of one of India’s most remarkable television journeys — the birth of a legacy. The image, recently resurfaced, shows renowned television producer Rajan Shahi receiving his first-ever award for his debut production, Sapna Babul Ka… Bidaai, from none other than Uday Shankar, who was then the network head and is now the Vice Chairman of JioStar. Standing beside Rajan is his daughter Ishika Shahi, symbolizing not just a moment of triumph but the foundation of a creative empire that continues to thrive.
The Moment That Marked a Beginning
The photograph captures more than just an award — it represents the very first victory for Director’s Kut Productions (DKP), Rajan Shahi’s maiden venture as a producer. What makes it even more special is that Uday Shankar personally handed him the award, marking the start of a relationship built on respect and mentorship.
For Rajan, the moment remains one of his most treasured memories. He fondly recalls, “Uday sir specifically flew down for the award function to hand over the trophy for Best Serial to us. I went on stage with my daughter Ishika, and he blessed us both. That picture will always be my favorite. My dream is that one day Ishika receives an award from Uday sir’s hands — that would complete the circle.”

A Mentor’s Faith and a Visionary’s Leap
Rajan often credits Vivek Bahl, who was the programming head at Star Plus during that time, for introducing him to Uday Shankar. After spending nearly 15 years directing successful shows, Rajan wanted to transition into production—a rare move at the time. “Back in those days, the idea of a technician turning producer was unheard of. Only established production houses got opportunities,” he once shared.
But destiny had other plans. Uday Shankar saw Rajan’s potential and encouraged him to produce his first show, standing firmly behind him with trust and vision. Rajan often calls him a mentor and a visionary, crediting him for giving him the biggest opportunity of his life.
