If she was known for her looks only, then why is she still popular? She doesn't look anything like she did in her youth- she may look good but she doesn't look the same. However, she's still owning online searches, still coming in Top 10 actresses list, I constantly see her in top searches online and even on PinkVilla and that Ormax thing.
Why is there so much hype for her comeback? Because shes a star. She doesn't need to validate herself by having hit films. The fact that you even made this topic proves that.
I agree her box office record is not the best, but also, try to understand her films. Many films that she did were too ahead for their time and lets not forget the audience didn't like offbeat films. Films like Raincoat, Chokar Bali, Shabd, - these films may work today, but back then the audience was too one-track minded to appreciate such films. Some films have failed, despite being good films like Guzarish. I don't know why some are discounting Robot, that was one of the highest grossing films of 2010, and you cant credit only Rajni
for it because we all know what happened with his new film with Deepika right. Also, lets look at Bride and Prejudice as well, the movie made TRIPLE its costs worldwide - which is the highest grossing English film with an Indian lead. That counts for something.
Also try to understand her position in the industry. I think its remarkable that Ash is a huge star despite having serious hate from the industry. Everyone was against her, especially the Three Khans. Do you know how hard it is for someone to even survive in this industry when all three Khans are against YOu> That too back in the 2000's. She lost A LOT Of good films because of this and we all know that. So cut some slack and look at the bigger picture
Funny how some of you are so quick to put a label on Ash "shes here for her looks only", or "because shes pretty". "lots of people didn't get work because they didn't look like ash' - But then you go and support someone like ALIA BHATT who is a classic example of nepotism. Straighten your thoughts people 😆 Some of yall are contradicting yourselves

I just love how certain male actor's fans just cannot get over Ash that they keep making threads on her. 😆

Coming to facts, Aishwarya has never focused on being this huge box office star, her filmography attests to that. If she wanted to she could have had numerous BO blockbusters - she has turned down films like Troy and Hancock, the biggest Hollywood moneyspinners, n-number of Rajnikanth type blockbuster movies in the South and in Bollywood too, from her first offered film Raja Hindustani up until the point of the latest "big blockbuster" film Happy New Year, she has turned down them all and mostly tried doing risky, challenging cinema. Aishwarya's career never revolved around Bollywood alone. She has always strived to make a mark in different languages. I don't expect certain fans who live and breathe box office and count crores every day to get it. It's cinema first, business later.

She has done very few commercial films throughout her career. After a huge success like Devdas, she goes ahead and does a small film like Chokher Bali in Bengali. It was a hit at the BO, but let's pretend it does not exist. She does excellent cinema in the South too, and they were all box office hits as well (except for Iruvar, which won numerous awards), but let's pretend they never happened. Her film Provoked which was primarily a UK film did decent business and she got a hell lot of critical acclaim. Her film which rode on her shoulders alone (Bride and Prejudice) made a 150 crore even before this 100-crore concept existed, years before the Khans had their first 100 crore film.

She is not the most popular actress without reason. She has essayed iconic characters like Nandini, Mansi, Paro, Jodhaa, Binodini, and etched her place in audience's hearts. And to answer the question, whether it is the worst record for an actress, no. Madhuri Dixit has only around a dozen hits out of 70-odd films that she did. She didn't have success in English, South or Bengali cinema either. But that does not matter. How well you connected to the audience is what does, and that shows through their popularity. Asin did five films in Bollywood, four of them 100 crore blockbusters. Where is she now? That just reiterates the fact that it isn't box office that matters in the long run, but the impact you made through your films/performances. Ash swept all the best actress awards within the first two years of her career. How many actors do that? Of course BO success is important, but it's not the be-all and end-all of everything. There are far more important things and they have made Ash the icon that she is.

I will quote Anushka Sharma here.

"Aishwarya (Rai Bachchan, actor) once told me that at the end of my career, what I'll remember are the experiences I'vehad " the hits and flops won't make a difference. I probably didn't understand it then." - Anushka

Note how a big hits like Bride and Prejudice, Robot were omitted from the list. If they were omitted on the basis that they were not Bollywood then how come The Mistress of Spices is mentioned? Also other successful films like HDDCS, Taal, Jeans appear to be missing.

Anyhow if you look at her career as a whole she's got a good success rate, despite all the acrimony she invited by standing up against the abusive bully Khan. And I love the fact that she's almost never played a flowerpot and then claimed credit success for that film. Be it opposite any big star, she has always had meaty, substantial characters to play, and never relegated herself to a flowerpot.
