Not Aamir
A bit more commercial Irrfan khan

THe thing is - he doesn't wanna balance it with enough commercial cinema. Mass audiences is something he should target too. His recent statements on how he wont do conventional role is something i reckon he shouldnt say. Coz everyone says stuff and they doing kinda makes them look like fool. He did SDR which i am definite had nothing unconventional about it. Just another rom-com with living in relationship theme.

His latest interview where he said he won't do conventional roles worries me a little. He's an amazing actor and I wish he last, but what he is doing now won't take him to the top. He will be respected as an actor but probably won't be making that much money or reach the height of stardom some of the newbies will.

Aamir's most big hits are conventional roles. Aamir's start of career was filled with typical bolly masalas and cliched romance films
Aamir connected with the mass with films like Raja Hindustani, Ishq, Ghulam, AAA

Sushant isnt willing to do such roles

@bold:

SDR had a commercial presentation, the story in itself was not conventional. Nor were the characters. Sushant's character wasn't the typical hero type that would be able to charm the girls off their feet, in fact it was the role of a very fluffy young person who is not able to commit in relationships due to his own complicated reasons and the events in the story make him unlikeable rather than likeable. The two women hold the reins in the relationship rather than him and he is happy to let them do so, again a point different than how it is usually in films. Sushant's character was nothing like what a BW hero should be. He played a confused, small town scruffy guide, a very flawed character, and unlike how it happens in most BW films, they didn't even give him any redemption in the end to make him appeal to the audience.

The film itself too was not conventional. It literally broke every BW cliche. You expect something to happen in the story but something else happens, (the reason why some people got frustrated with the film at points, but critics liked it.) Guy and girl don't even get married in the end and there is no 'happily ever after' like in most films. It was these reasons that made the film appeal to critics- the quirky setup, unconventional characters and the message that the film gave out in the end (which not everyone understood btw) but it was these same reasons that made the audience NOT like the film. Yes it was a rom-com but very different from others. You can see the difference in the reactions itself- those who liked the film really liked it, those who didn't, didn't like it at all.

Even Maneesh Sharma, the director of SDR said in an interview that YRF hadn't thought that this film would make much money and they were okay with it bcos the main intention was to make a different sort of film. (That it made more money than many YRF romcoms and was a clean hit is a different issue though). During the initial screenings itself, people had told them that this film won't be appreciated bcos it is too unconventional for the audience.

Yes, it was a romcom, but not a typical one. Far from it, I think.

i highly doubt frst 2 options,..so i may think fah 3rd,..
his next 2 to 3 releases (which i obv heard here on forum) are unconventioanl acc to him...
and he wouldnt do conventional roles either,..would sit around to grab different small budget movies,.. means he would have no balancing movies to attract th masses..major downfall of his to-be career,..

smtimes stories and characters may not be much unconventional buh you make them to look different,.

BI, PK was signed at a time when Sushant had just done one small budget film with three leads and had no idea how far he would be able to go in BW, that film had not even been released at that point. For him, it must have been a big deal back then when someone like Raju Hirani offered a small role to him in the film alongside Aamir Khan.

But after that, once he got signed by YRF he has signed all promising projects with him in the main role. Playing a small role in one film, which he accepted very early when he didn't know how far he could go doesn't mean he doesn't have anything promising in his kitty or is a small actor.
