it is weird if ppl expected some bumper opening...key thing, it is majorly in English...and that is the original version...it would obvio be better in English even if they dub it in Hindi...and it is for a specific audience only...it is not a typical commercial film

Will Bipasha Basu rule over Deepika Padukone this Friday?
By Subhash K. Jha, Sep 12, 2014 - 11:03 IST

It's the sultry Bipasha Basu versus the incandescent Deepika Padukone at the box office this week. And if Deepika had four blockbusters last year, let's not forget she started this year with a thundering flop Kochadaiyyan.

Bipasha and director Vikram Bhatt who has helmed this week's shiver giver Creature, have teamed up for two earlier blockbusters Raaz and Raaz 3. They have a following.

So which will the audience have more fun with Creature or Finding Fanny?

Finding Fanny is not going to be easy. You can only find those who are lost. And Homi Adajania's quirky wacky Goan carnival of a film is so much in-your-face you feel Premnath with his half-open crotch in Raj Kapoor's Bobby would happily exchange his feni for Fanny.

There are lots of backside jokes doing the rounds on television. And if we think that to be a sign of audiences maturing we have another thought coming. There's many a slip between the butt and the if.

The buzz, if you stop long enough to hear it, still surrounds the traditional Good Versus Evil entertainer.

Roshan Singh an exhibitor-distributor from Bihar says, "Dark edgy, wacky comedies are all very well in the metros, and that too for a minuscule audience. If we look beyond Bandra and Colaba in Mumbai, there is a massive audience for Vikram Bhatt's mythology-inspired supernatural thrillers."

Singh who comes from a family of three generations of distributors and exhibitors thinks Finding Fanny looks too niche for the average moviegoer.

And trade analyst Amod Mehra agrees. Says Amod Mehra, "Fanny looks too weird. Creature definitely has an edge."

The European feel of Homi Adjania's Finding Fanny has been diluted somewhat by dubbing the English-language film into Hindi.

And that, according to a prominent middle aged director who is a 'fanny' of Homi's cinema, is a big mistake. "How can you change the language that these characters think and speak in? You are not only losing the original flavour, you also end up making the quirky characters look more caricatural than intended."

The film's latent European flavour is a component in contemporary cinema that Vikram Bhatt diligently avoids in all his films.

Most, if not all, his supernatural thrillers are based on Hindu mythology.

Creature is founded is also based on Hindu mythology.

Says Bhatt, "I borrow the concepts for my films from Hindu mythology because we are lucky enough to a have a mythology. We blindly ape American cinema which borrows from Greek and Roman mythology."

So what would be lording over the box office? The aroma of European cinema wafting from the Goan beaches? Or the hot heady smell of desi curry-mythology streaming through the 3D format?

Anand Vishal, Head Operations & Sales Fun Cinemas, thinks the audience would be divided. "In the urban areas Finding Fanny's edgy mood would have an edge provided the treatment and execution are appealing. Creature will do well in non-metro and smaller cities as the supernatural genre works better in the smaller cities where there's a better connect with the audience."

Opening day is expected to get 3 CR. That is not bad, 3 cr from 900 screen is same as getting 10 cr from 3000 screen.

Today's two big releases, Homi Adajania's Finding Fanny and Vikram Bhatt's Creature 3D are of totally different genres and target different sets of audiences. Finding Fanny that hit 900 screens today has opened to a good occupancy of 40 to 45%. Which in fact is quite overwhelming considering that the film was made on a low budget and was targeted for the multiplex and metro audience. The fact that it was promoted aptly and was raved by the entire industry and critics has worked wonders for this English drama to a great extent. According to early trends, Finding Fanny is expected to collected around 7-8 crores today.

On the other hand, Creature 3D has opened to a comparatively average occupancy of 15 to 20%. The film is targeted for the single screen audiences and is expected to make around 3 to 4 crores today. According to trade pundits both the films are expected to gain momentum over the weekend but Finding Fanny might soar higher due to a good word of mouth and critics appreciation.

Meanwhile, Priyanka Chopra's power packed Mary Kom has banked a collection of 51.90 cr worldwide in a week from its release and its still going strong at the ticket windows.
is that true?

Finding Fanny and Creature 3D First Day Collection Early Trends

Both new releases Finding Fanny and Creature 3D has started slowly at Friday Box Office. Finding Fanny is performing little better in Premium Multiplexes in big cities. Whereas performance in plexes in other cities is poor to below average. Creature 3D is somewhat decent in single screens as reports are coming in, but that also in interiors. Film performance in Big cities is poor.

Finding Fanny is performing good in cities like Gurgaon, Delhi and Mumbai in high-end plexes. In normal plexes also business is decent. Film in Morning-Noon shows registered occupancy of around 30-35% there. In Evening time film occupancy is around 50-55% which is decent. But problem for film is in interiors where occupancy level is just around 15-20% which is unacceptable. What's more film has got limited screening and it will hamper the first day collection big time. Still eventually it should emerge ahead of Creature 3D as film is doing much better in premium multiplexes.

Coming to Creature 3D film has opened to 20% occupancy in Morning-Noon shows. Film showed limited growth in Evening time and is registering occupancy in the region of 25-30%. Film is doing somewhat decent business in single screen in interiors with occupancy in the region of 30-35%+. But everywhere else film is a downer. Film is doing badly in multiplexes and specially in big cities with moderate occupancy of 15-20%. Creature 3D might be doing better in single screens ahead of Finding Fanny, but overall day collection may come lower than later as it is doing poor business in multiplexes, specially in high end ones.

Mary Kom has started decently in second week and doing decent business. Film screening is reduced because of release of Finding Fanny and Creature 3D. But it still has enough to perform well. Film started the day with occupancy in the region of 25% which is decent considering film is into day 8. In Evening film has shown growth and is registering occupancy of about 35%+. That means film should put up significant number for 8th Day which should lead to a decent second weekend.
