Singham Returns, the much-awaited movie of Rohit Shetty after his blockbuster hit last year Chennai Returns will be finally out Tomorrow, August 15.
Cast: Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Amole Gupte
Director: Rohit Shetty
Singham Returns is for people who are die-hard fans of Rohit Shetty and his action sequences. His Singham again with Ajay Devgn in 2011 was all about guns, bullets and chasing cars.
Sequels in Bollywood have never fared well, however, this Singham Returns is not a sequel and has it's own unique storyline. Director Rohit Shetty spoke about the action sequences in the film and said, "The film is entirely based in Mumbai, and shooting action in the city is a huge challenge."
He appreciated Mumbai police and said, "I'm fortunate that the protagonist of my film, Bajirao Singham, is a law-abiding police officer and so, the police did have a soft spot for us. I'm grateful to the Mumbai Police, who helped us with permissions. Had they not allowed us, we could never have dreamt of shooting in places like the Gateway of India."
He also added, "Post the terror attacks of 26/11, no film has been allowed to shoot there. Kids of this generation may never have seen Mumbai on screen the way we have captured the city in our film. Whether it is the railway tracks of Reay Road, Ballard Pier, or the Mahim Dargah, we have done breathtaking action around all these iconic landmarks."
Story Goes Like This...
Singham Returns is all about cop-and-crook drama. Bajirao Singham (Ajay Devgn) now comes into action as DCP of Mumbai. The story goes on from a honest policeman from his squad who is dead holding a huge sum of money and labelled being corrupt.
Bajirao Singham starts his journey of unravelling the corrupt politicians and the black money scam. DCP Bajirao Singham who is the most honest cop begins his journey of eliminating the corrupt people one by one. Will he succeed in his journey? Will he face the political force with all honesty and integrity?

Bollywood review: Ajay Devgn catwalks through 'Singham Returns'
It's all about unintentional comedy and a convoluted philosophy over "give-and-take" that Rohit Shetty flaunts in his rather confused action-thriller

Forget flexing his muscles and boxing baddies with swift punches, Ajay Devgn spent much of his time catwalking through Rohit Shetty's two-and-a-half-hour-long, schizophrenic action-thriller. It's when he occasionally removes his aviators that you get a sense of his actual pain.

Had Steven Benard used his skills wisely on the editor's desk he could've easily chopped off the hero's innumerable slow-motion walks, reducing the movie by an hour and bringing ample relief to viewers.

But, that was not to be.

Instead, Rohit Shetty insists on making his hunk of a cop Bajirao Singham walk a lot, each time in slow-motion with deafening background score. And when he isn't walking, alone or with his cronies, he is busy indulging in vintage Rohit Shetty gimmicks. From flying unaided to kicking unsuspecting baddies mid-air to slapping anyone offering him a kickback, to blowing up cars, Bajirao is seen unabashedly flaunting his super-powers.

Unlike most Bollywood sequels, Shetty's Bajirao's temperament, philosophy and dialogues remain strangely in sync with the original. If anything, it is his decision to cut down on his vocal chords and to focus instead on reforming the youth of the country that appeared different.

It isn't anything drastic but hints at Rohit Shetty's attempt at innovating his unmatched style of filmmaking. While it is wasted on me, I'm sure he has his loyalists who will applaud these efforts.

Ajay Devgn pretty much sleepwalks through Singham Returns', and that is a feat considering his overzealous co-star and on-screen lover Kareena Kapoor is screeching and tweaking her facial muscles with impeccable flair. From belting scrawny journalists to being titled YouTube sensation Lady Singham' she's absurdly energetic throughout the film. For an actress who claims to possess immense acting talent, this is by far her most unrestrained and rather painful performance.

It's when the lone romantic track kicks in an hour into the madness that you see Bebo's relief. And mine too.

With Singham Returns' and the earlier box-office dud Satyagraha', Ajay and Kareena appear to be making a habit of doing "bad" movies together.

There's also ace moviemaker Amole Gupte who unforgivingly reduces himself to a caricature to play the conniving Baba'. There are a few glimpses of his real talent but Rohit Shetty buries him in a character that appears more comical than menacing. There's also Zakir Hussain reprising his trademark evil campaign as the notorious Prakash Rao. His shots are predictable.

Anupam Kher and Mahesh Manjrekar team up to embark on a political crusade to eliminate the old, dynasty power and handover the political reins to the young generation. For a Rohit Shetty movie, these are rather ambitious angles and therefore appear superficial. For a filmmaker who continues to frame the Indian media in stereotypes (with ethnic ladies wearing bindis and salwar-kameeses), his plans to give them power and recognition towards the end appear amusing.

Apart from being part-action, part-romantic and part-political, Singham Returns' is also part-confused. At one point, the godman is treated with suspicion over blind faith but another Bajirao preaches about faith of a different kind. At one time, Bebo's Avni is talks about women's empowerment but at another she is offended when her lover hints at her going out to a club for a drink.

Clearly, Rohit Shetty is attempting to go the extra mile, even though he isn't putting any thought to it.

Skip 'Singham Returns' if you don't want to lose your mind or if you don't have the courage to stomach meaningless Bollywood masala films.

It has a message if you could grasp it but we would recommend you to don't juggle your brains much over that and just look out for two and a half hours of entertainment in which Ajay takes the lead.

Stars- Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Anupam Kher, Amol Gupte
Director- Rohit Shetty
Music Director- Ankit Tiwari, Jeet Gangulli, Meet Bros Anjjan and Yo Yo Honey Singh

Rohit Shetty, after roping in SRK in his production last year, soar his level up in his style of working. Now after a year the director is back with Ajay Devgn who tagged himself in Rohit's most number of flicks.

And nonetheless Ajay and Rohit are once again unbelievably glorious with their beloved work of action in Singham Returns.

However, sequels in Bollywood have rarely worked but it seems favorable for Rohit Shetty yet again. Looking back at his Golmaal series we may get a clear stance. Singham's sequel in yet another example and cements Rohit's successful streak in Indian cinema.

Singham Returns roars louder that before with its action and one-liners. This roar is surely to receive loud screams, high-pitched whistles and applause in packed theatres. However, it would be quite early to predict whether this could turn a gold-digger at box office. But after witnessing this blasting drama one would say it's going to bring moolah.

So, first of all, what's the story all about? Allow us to tell you. The honest and the fearless Bajirao Singham (Ajay Devgn) is now the DCP of Mumbai and is once again all set to flush off the local dirt. Mumbai has Guruji (Anupam Kher) as a virtuous political leader who wants to bring a new change in the society and considers black money as the biggest menace to the country. But his moralistic aims are a threat to some dishonest men including dharm-guru' Swamiji (Amol Gupte) whose men keep threatening Guruji.

When Singham intervenes here, he finds himself into a trap when a police constable from his squad is found dead in a police van stuffed with huge sum of money. Singham is charged of being corrupt but he fights back to prove one and all wrong and paint the blemish on his other wise spotless uniform.

How this determined lion facing new challenges get to prove his honesty and bravery, that's what Rohit narrates in this power-packed action drama.

Director keeps the premise similar to what he had in 2011 hit but Singham Returns is more realistic however, nothing compared to Bollywood's hard-core satirical flick. He goes a step ahead and tries to expose the political underbelly and corruption which could have been more refined. But neither have we expected a Rohit Shetty flick to be so nor the director considers panning the political deeds and changing his own image.

You get what you expect before entering the theatres. Choreographed by Rohit Shetty himself alongwith Jai Singh Nijjar and Suniel Rodrigues, the power-packed action sequences are two times bigger than Singham Returns's prequel. One of them shot on a bridge is the jaw-dropping and the show-stealer. While the narration is fast-paced, such thunderous action stunts keep you engaged throughout.

Editor Steven Benard's editing looks like have too much of gif format utilized in those sequences particularly when Ajay as an annihilator in one scene bashes up the goon. But it fits in well.

The raging interaction between Swamiji and Bajirao is captivating and amusing with some witty dialogues written by Sajid-Farhad duo while the cute romance between our male protagonist and Kavya Bhosle (Kareena Kapoor Khan) too has some good moments.

What's more admirable is that in spite too many characters, the screenplay is extremely clear cut, with every role detailed perfectly.

What could have been minimized is the length which is extensive. Moreover, the complete law enforcement coming together to support Singham looks a lot dramatic. But let me remind you that it's a masala entertainer and we let Rohit enjoy the cinematic liberty.

Also it has a message if you could grasp it but we would recommend you to don't juggle your brains much over that and just look out for two and a half hours of entertainment in which Ajay takes the lead.

He fits in the role of super cop in the flick. Ajay brings in the frustration and anger which he has been maintaining in many of his political satirical flicks. With it he makes his character larger than life.

Kareena Kapoor Khan is like breath of fresh air. She is notorious and blatant in her character. Her way of flirting with Ajay provides a comic relief.

Amole Gupte as an antagonist is marvelous. His presence has a required weight-age and he sends tremors down when comes on screen.

Dayanand Shetty as an inspector carries the same persona for which he has been known in one of the longest running shows on TV CID'. Anupam Kher is a righteous politician is good too.

Compared to flick's first installment music is better here. Composed by Ankit Tiwari, Jeet Gangulli, Meet Bros Anjjan and Yo Yo Honey Singh, the songs have a decent shelf life while they gel in the movie comfortably. Background score by Amar Mohile is superb.

Ajay Devgn was fierce as Bajirao Singham in the Rohit Shetty directed film, Singham which released in 2011. And Devgn is back with a bang in Singham Returns, a sequel to the original and the actor reprises his role as D.C.P. once again. The film's trailer which was released on 11th July has garnered good reviews. But the film has generated a lot of interest, apart from the star cast. Ahead of its release on Independence Day, the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) has written to the CBFC to ban the film as it depicts Hindu saints in a bad light, hurting the religious sentiment. While this may be a controversy Rohit is not interested in courting, we look at 5 other reasons why you should go and watch Singham Returns.

Kareena Returns- Bebo has worked with Rohit Shetty in Golmaal, Golmaal Returns, Golmaal 3 and now teams up with Shetty in Singham Returns. While the first film featured Kajal Aggarwal, the sequel has the Golmaal franchise combo of Kareena and Ajay Devgn. The two have proven to be a hit jodi onscreen and like every film, Bebo takes over Kajal's role of Kavya Bhosle. While her role may not be as big as Ajay's, nevertheless, Bebo is a treat to watch on the big screen, especially since she is doing lesser films post marriage and is being more selective. Bebo's clothes too are always different in all her films and it will be fun to see what more she can add to Kavya's character and how she takes it further.

Ajay-Rohit Combo- Rohit Shetty and Ajay Devgn are buddies and this fact everyone knows. The duo have worked well together and have made blockbusters out of the Golmaal Franchise and Singham. With Singham 2, they will only take it further and the film, which releases this Independence Day, will do well at the box office as this combination can never go wrong. Rohit has always been open about his equation with Ajay Devgn and in an interview with The Times of India, he was quoted saying, "It's a myth that we are friends. For me, he is my father and elder brother. Whatever I am, is because of him. I started as an assistant director with Kuku Kohli when I was just 15. I knew Ajay as an assistant director as well, as I had assisted Veeruji, his father. When Ajay started his company with Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha, I was associate director. After Raju Chacha he said, 'I will do a film for you' and gave me Zameen to direct. Zameen bombed and no one wanted to work with me, but he stood by me. I wanted to make Golmaal. Again the industry was laughing, predicting our failure, saying how can an action hero with an action director make a comedy film. But it became a hit. I then told him I wanted to make Singham. Again, we were ridiculed for being on a suicide mission, wanting to do action after comedy. But Ajay stood by me. I can't deny that fact. He is my brother and will always remain that." Well, this sums up everything!

Singham as a brand- Rohit Shetty's Singham entered the 100 crore club and it seems the director is cashing on its success. With big blockbusters to his name, Singham is no exception. According to a report in Koimoi, the film opened to a Rs. 9 crore earning on Day One of its release on 22nd July. Thereafter, it went on to gross Rs. 30.5 crores in the weekend and Rs. 50 crores in its first week at the box office. Singham Returns too should be one of the highest grossers of 2014, considering it has the Ajay-Rohit and Kareena combo returning once again. Rohit has luck at the box office and Chennai Express was a super duper hit at the box office. Even the badshah of Bollywood SRK, who worked with Shetty on Chennai Express, took to twitter to wish the Singham returns team luck, he posted, ""Want to wish Rohit Shetty & Ajay Devgn & their whole team of Singham2 the best of luck. May u entertain us as u have been doing for yrs." (sic)

Lots of Action and stunts- How can a Rohit Shetty film be complete without action. Rohit has an obsession with stunts and has always experimented with his films, be it Golmaal, Golmaal Returns or Singham. With Ajay Devgn in it, the film has to have a lot of action as he's the stuntman of the industry. While Rohit's father was a stunt director, so was Ajay Devgn's so it's natural for their film to have a lot of action sequences. Talking about the action sequences in Singham Returns, Ajay Devgn in an interview to India Today was quoted saying, "People are really tired of that same todnewala action. So the action in Singham Returns is very real, the shooting style is also very real. The drama is very real. A lot of things have changed but the crux remains hardcore. That you can't change. And that doesn't change anywhere. Only the packaging and the way you present it changes." According to a report in The Times of India, a source associated with the movie was quoted saying, "Ajay has attempted different stunts this time. Two sequences in the trailer " Ajay getting thrown against the door of a jeep after an explosion and the way he steps out of a moving jeep to kick a goon " has generated curiosity among the audience. There are also a number of action sequences involving guns, shot in a way we haven't seen before."

Rohit comes back to the Box Office after a year- Director Rohit Shetty's last venture was Chennai Express, starring Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone. But that was a year back. Shetty, who has been busy shooting for Singham Returns, returns after a brief hiatus. Shot in Goa, Singham Returns takes audiences to another story and journey, but the characters remain the same. Rohit seems to have the Midas touch and all his films have worked well with audiences and the box office collection is proof of that. Considering he has spent much time on Singham Returns, this film will be a delight, since Singham worked well too. A Rohit Shetty film seems maximum occupancy in theatres and it's a wait and watch to see what this film has to offer.
