ENTERTAINMENT Takes A Good Start
Akshay Kumar starrer ''Entertainment'' released today in 2800 screens in India and 420 in overseas. Film is in a very peculiar position as it has been sandwiched between ''Singham Returns'' and ''Kick''. Film has to score big in week one.
Film started well in morning in Delhi, UP and East Punjab though it will face competition from ''Munde UK De 2'' in north. Film is rather slow in Mumbai and Gujarat but decent to average in central India. Film has overall 30% start and should see jump from evening onwards.
Film should score close to 9.5-10.5 cr nett on day one minimum and good rush in evening can take it close to 12 cr nett which will be an ideal figure for the film. Overall good weekend is on the card as film has appreciation from masses.

Just back from Entertainment .The film should have been called an 'IRRITANT'. This definitely ranks amongst the most annoying films to come out of Bollywood .The story itself is quite moronic but even that would have been pardonable had the film been remotely 'entertaining'.There were few sequences which did bring a smile on my face but overall the film remains a stinker.

The start itself is absolute horrendous with a series of ununny gags one after another .I tried so hard to laugh but in vein .The film gets slightly interesting after the dog is introduced .Especially the entire track where Akshay tries to eliminate the dog is definitely funny ditto for the inroduction of two villians. But the film becomes unbearable after the interval .The entire emotional angle is a farce and makes you cringe in embarassment .Akshay's 'divide and rule' formula tested my patience. The 'dog' factor which made the film amusing in the first half goes missing in the second .The second half is like a bad dream that goes on and on .I heaved a sign of relief when the film ended .

Have always loved Akshay in comedies .But here he is a mixed bag .His comic timing is fantastic as expected but goes over the top at times. Also age has started to show on his face .He looks absolutely haggard and worn out at places.Tamannah is hardly there .Also her constant imitation of TV serials gets too much after a point .

Musically too the film is not upto the mark .The songs are just average which is unexpected in a film produced by tips .

Overall an insufferable comedy that falls flat on its face .This film might entertain you if you liked 'Phata Poster Nikhla Hero ,another comic film from the same production house. Else skip it ..

Entertainment First Day (Friday) Collection Early Trends. Good Jump in Evening-Night Shows.0
Posted by ankur baruahYou May Also Like News on: Tamannaahat Friday, August 08, 2014
Entertainment is showing good growth in business on 1st day (Friday) specially in Evening and Night shows as per latest reports received. Film started rather slowly in Morning Shows with occupancy in the range of 30-35%. After that film sustained well in Noon-Afternoon shows and registered occupancy in the range of 40% which is decent. Film has picked up well from Evening onward and right now registering very good occupancy of around 55-60%. Still late night shows are left and if film holds well there then it will be heading for a decent first day collection despite a moderate start in Morning.
Film is doing very well in Delhi, Gurgaon, Hyderabad, Lucknow. Film has also picked up the pace in Mumbai which is slow in first half of the day. Pune is still on lower side, but has picked up from first half of the day. Overall occupancy is decent to good.
Major single screen reports are still to be received which is a strong zone of Akshay Kumar in Northern and Mass belt. From samples film is registering on average occupancy of 40-50% there on for 1st day.
It is too early to make any prediction for Entertainment at the moment. Looking at the trend film is doing good in later part which has almost ensured that film will do double figure business for day one. Whether it can touch a respectable 14-15 crore nett for 1st day is now mainly dependent on Late Night shows and major single screen business which report is still to be received.
Occupancy Report for Entertainment for Friday Evening-Night shows (Selected Cinemas) -
Delhi - 60%
Gurgaon - 60%
Mumbai - 55%
Hyderabad - 65-70%
Pune - 40-45%
Lucknow - 50%

Entertainment Movie Review

Cast:Junior, Akshay Kumar and Tamannaah Bhatia
Director: Sajid-Farhad

SPOILERS AHEAD

This is Bollywood's first attempt at a canine comedy. The result is terrible advertisement for all concerned - mankind as a whole, man's best friend in particular, and the genre itself.

Entertainment, scripted and directed by super-successful potboiler writers Farhad-Sajid, is unabashedly asinine and delivers anything but what the title promises.

What this atrocious Akshay Kumar vehicle comes up with in the name of entertainment is an utterly unfunny and appallingly dim-witted concoction that is marred by stale gags and labored one-liners.

The only bright spot in the film is Akshay's principal co-actor, Junior the Wonder Dog, a handsome, smooth-coated Golden Retriever.

But the poor dog stands no chance of being heard above the din. Surrounded by humans who insist on playing monkey tricks, the four-legged creature is hopelessly out of place.
While the dog is made to mimic the men around him, the men around the dog lose no opportunity to resort to simian antics.

Entertainment, dogged by a screenplay that is as silly as it is starchy, is like a lumbering monster stuck in a snowstorm and incapable of gathering either momentum or direction despite stretching every single sinew in its body.

The title of the film stems from the dog's screen moniker, which, in turn, is derived from the joyful effect that the canine character has on the life of his flush-with-cash but lonely master.

For his unwavering devotion, the dog inherits the wealth of Bangkok's Indian-origin diamond king Pannalal Johri (Dalip Tahil, who is seen mostly in a framed, garlanded portrait on a wall inside the tycoon's mansion).

The windfall that the retriever receives makes him an object of envy and he has to employ all his wiles to keep potential usurpers at bay.

The male protagonist (who happens to be the son of a long-dead woman who was abandoned by the moneyed grandee) has his sights on biological father's estate.

So do two villainous jailbirds (siblings Karan and Arjun, played by Prakash Raj and Sonu Sood, who claim to be the business baron's "second cousins").

The hero, Akhil Lokhande from aamchi Mumbai, lurches from one low-paying job to another until information pops up from nowhere about the untimely death of a stinking rich papa he did not know existed.

Akhil has reasons for wanting to get rich quick. The demanding father (Mithun Chakraborty) of the soap opera actress that he loves (Tamannah Bhatia) will settle for nothing less than a moneybag for his daughter.

But the dog and his Urdu-spouting caretaker, Habibullah (Johny Lever), have other ideas.
It might have helped the film's cause somewhat had Farhad-Sajid opted not to bark up the wrong tree in their desperate quest for laughs.

The debutant director duo seeks to squeeze coarse humour out of meaningless cross-references to Bollywood movies of the past and to the names and traits of Mumbai showbiz personalities, including those in the cast.

Most of these references flow from the mouth of the hero's sidekick, Jugnu (Krushna Abhishek), a DVD library owner whose lines are peppered with pointless puns on the names of Bollywood actors. But he is by no means the only offender.

The villains, on their part, rope in three lawyers named Sanjay, Leela and Bhansali when they hatch a plot to snatch away the dog's riches. But what is the connection between the maker of Saawariya and the act of daylight robbery? That is anybody's guess.

The two baddies also frequently play on their names, Karan and Arjun, to the accompaniment of the musical leitmotif from the Shahrukh-Salman starrer.

And of course, the heroine never tires of harping on Balaji ki kasam and Ekta.

What are these guys blabbering on about, one might ask. A character actually poses that question at one point in the film, but gets no coherent answer.

Entertainment is the sort of film in which the characters are reduced to exchanging inanities while the dog looks on flummoxed.

In the acting department, Entertainment is nearly in the Humshakals league. In other words, it will definitely be in the running for the year's Golden Kela awards. The actors in this film have clearly been paid to make a sorry spectacle of themselves. It does not make for happy viewing.

The dog scores over the rest of the cast because the animal does not have any dialogue to deliver nor any song to swing to.

If this is entertainment, what, pray, is torture? Run for cover.

'Entertainment' movie review. 'Entertainment' movie review.

Summary

Akshay Kumar's 'Entertainment' misses the point entirely : it is dull and loud, with a brow so lowered that it reaches the floor.

Cast: Akshay Kumar, Krushna Abhishek, Tamannah Bhatia, Prakash Raj, Sonu Sood, Johnny Lever, Mithun Chakraborty
Directors: Sajid-Farhad
Rating: * star

I love dogs. They are good people. And Akshay Kumar in full throttle has been known to raise a nifty paw or two. Dog and star come together in a flick that promises to entertain us.

We know this because it is called Entertainment', just in case we are in the danger of missing the point. But it is the film which misses the point entirely : it is dull and loud, with a brow so lowered that it reaches the floor.

Apart from being a woman's best friend, dogs can be a hoot. It's impossible to be bored around them. But even the poor golden retriever, who goes by the name of Entertainment' , doesn't get to have any fun because he is buried in stuff which the film's directors deem funny.

Which is, simply, this : crowd the film with the corniest of dialogue ( it starts off faintly funny in the beginning, and gets old too soon), bung in as many crotch jokes as possible ( one clutched crotch may be okay, but a series of grown men clutching their privates, not once, but several times over, as a source of 'comedy'?), and coast on crassness.

The debutant directors have written such films as Golmaal Returns', Ready' and Housefull 2', so the dialogue, laced with Bollywood jokes and a running Ekta Kapoor gag, comes as no surprise. Neither does the discovery that the film lurches from one scene to another without bothering too much about plot. When all you want is for your actors to mouth a line, a story is pointless extravagance.

Average joe Akhil ( Kumar), accompanied by his pal ( Abhishek), goes in search of his rightful inheritance, and finds his billionaire father's favourite pet,

Entertaiment, ahead of him. Along come two villainous fellows, one called Karan ( Sood), and the other, yes kiddies, is Arjun ( Raj). Akhil's girl ( Bhatia), and her father ( Chakraborty) also show up. Johnny Lever is already at the scene doing the Johnny Lever thing, widening his eyes, and being the butt of risible jokes arising from his name, which decency will not allow me to repeat.

That leaves us with Akshay Kumar, the star of this enterprise who is in practically every scene, without once letting the dog take over. It's really tough to snatch attention away from animals and babies because they are such scene-grabbers, but if there's nothing solid written for them, what can the poor critters do?

One potentially great scene, involving the word kuttey', along with the name Basanti,is thrown away in the end-credits. If only the writers had riffed some more on those lines, Entertainment' would have been truly entertaining. Doggone, I protest.
