Apples and oranges. Those Australian actors and Romans are the same "race" - Caucasians, thus have similar facial features. PC and Mary Kom have completely different racial backgrounds. Accent comparison is not the same as race comparison.

OT: I have no issue with PC acting as Mary Kom. There are no north eastern actresses in mainstream hindi film industry, let alone well known ones. Besides, PC brings star power to the table, thus ensuring widespread recognition for the biopic. It's a very sound business decision while at the same time it ensures that the film receives maximum recognition and hopefully appreciation of the subject.

I find that racial authenticity is important in casting roles, especially when casting real people. You cannot have a white man play Malcom X or a black man portray John F Kennedy. I myself have had a major issue with PC being cast as Mary Kom. As it is we have a problem with North Eastern people being treated as outsiders and not racially fitting in. The Mary Kom biopic was a great opportunity to portray someone from that region as faithfully and patriotically Indian. So definitely, this is a missed opportunity. I wish they would have put in an effort into finding a North Eastern star to play the role. That being said I do commend the effort PC and others are putting in the movie and will watch it.

Now for the flip side. How important should race be when you cast a role? The remake of the Shirley Temple classic Annie has gotten flak from some people for making Annie black. The fictional Annie is clearly defined as a white red head with freckles. Can you change her to be a black girl? Most liberals are supporting black Annie calling her critics racist. But then again these same people defending black Annie were the ones who criticized white Goku. They said Goku is an Asian character and the makers should not have reimagined him to be white.

There is a double standard when it comes to race issues. If characters are adopted to fit a minority group, it is considered creative and innovative; but if characters are adopted to fit a majority group, it is seen as insensitive and racist. This double standard itself can be defended stating that there is a huge power gap between majority and minority and such stances help close the gap. Unless we live in a world that is truly color blind - double standards appear necessary to balance other double standards. Quite a paradox.

Bottom line is race issues are sensitive. We will struggle to find the right answers until our world equal.

Until then please commit to making only multiracial babies so we can start making the world equal. 😆

Dont know which poll ur talking about.

To ur question-Katrina cant act 😆No offence, but sorry. She cannot pull of meaty roles like these.

It would have been a close call between Deepika and Priyanka. But who the heroine should be is completely the makers' choice. And it not about PC,it could have DP or any other actress who can actually act and pull crowds at the same time.

That being said a new actress with some impeccable acting skills could have done the job too. But look at the odds. Very unlikely, practically. Ofcourse there have been exceptions.

See,its not rocket science. Take Milkha Singh's story for instance. The current generation knew very little of him. I myself had only heard his name a couple of times. When Bhaag Milkha BHaag came out. Everyone took an interest in actually finding out who he was and it gave him even bigger name (Not that such legends didnt have enough. But you know what I mean)

When the promos came out,my dad had told me once how Milkha Singh had lost that race by looking back. So,that caused many people from the older generation as well to remember the man's life as an athlete. And I give full points to RPM's direction and Farhan's impeccable acting as MS

And this is what I would like to believe would happen with MK.Her story is very inspiring. I myself have always looked upto her as an athlete. And I would also like to believe that this would change the mindset of certain creeps who isolate the people from the North-east. Its terribly sad that they are treated that way in some places.

Well, I agree with some points.
Indian Government has been neglecting North East from the beginning let alone Bollywood which is really really sad.
Coming back to the topic, I feel this movie can be an inspirational and can motivate many Indian girls to achieve their dreams. And PC being popular, it will get a wider reach.

That of course is obviously not palatable to me especially keeping in mind the fact that back in the days, in America, white actors painted their faces black to portray Black characters. I never watched that movie and the fact that so many white guys at halloween parties dressed up as that character pissed me off too. 🤢

But you were referring to accents which is not the same as race comparison.

Critics or who ever is writing this article needs to leave PC alone.
While PC might not have a stong boxoffice pull she is still a popular actress. Picking a North Indian for this film..won't interest the audience..not because of race or anything but because PC is a recognizable face.

They did the same to her when SKM released.

I do agree with parts of it. But the fact is, this is an Indian film and in India these films will not run without a 'name'. PC has name recognition. The good thing about Mary Kom the movie is it brought recognition to Mary Kom the person and also the kind of film that Mary Kom is will make more people receptive towards independent type cinema.
Movies are made for money, not charity in the end and the chances of people watching it are more with a name. Even a most beautifully acted film is not worth unless many people watch. That is the hard truth.
