I do agree that making a north-east actress play the role would have brought more authenticity to portrayal BUT their are several negativies of doing same.

--- This is biopic of unsung hero and its story needs to be spread across every generation of people. Bringing an unknown actress to the desk would have definitely not generated the buzz that film required to succeed. I can't imagine all these stars retweeting poster of Mary Kom had it not have had PC in it.! I am also sure, the think trailer would have struck 3 million hits but would have stuck around 3 lakh views only!

--- This is Hindi film and not Manipur/Regional film. An actress from North-Eastern region would have had her speech influenced with a Manipuri accent, making people not connected to it.

--- Most importantly - COMMERCE/MONEY. Though this film is being made with good motive of making people know about MK but at end why would producer want to go into loss! PC does bring that certain amount of star power required for this film to make money. Had leading actress been unknown, film would not gross even 1/4 of total money

My Remark : If Ben Kinsgley can win an Oscar for his portrayal of Gandhi (Angrez playing an Indian -_-,) then why can't people give Priyanka a chance? She will definitely prove everyone WRONG!

Considering most of the reactions from the trailer is positive I'm not sure proving everyone wrong will augur well for her.

this was on FB as well and I loved some of the comments.
one of them were..
Why do we Indians 'Regionalize' everything? why can't we see it as MK, a woman athlete's story getting so much more recognition & bigger platform which people will see/hear. PC even isn't disappointing in Trailers, but even before watching a Movie, we are ready to give our judgment & bring in 'Regional' factor.

Vedant, it's not about regionalism or nationality. Often actors from one region play characters from another region, they alter their accents, body language, have a makeover etc. But in this case the thing is that people from North East look VERY different than people from rest of India, it's a very striking feature. So much, that they are called Chinki, Chinese etc.. That difference in looks sort of becomes their stand out feature in a crowd- I have seen it myself in my college too. When an actor who looks so drastically different plays a role of a North Eastern (and a very famous one!) and is obviously unable to look the part as there is only an extent to which facial features can be changed, the question normally pops up that wouldn't it have been better if an actor from that region was selected, at least for the sake of the authenticity of 'looking the character' which is a very basic requirement? Especially bcos there is a sequence in the film where this part has been highlighted about people from North East not even being considered part of India (the part where PC is shouting 'India mera dharam hai', I am guessing it is for this issue only) WHY was such an actor not selected even at the extent of putting in a major wrong note in the story? Especially when we have SLB, who is known as one who goes to any lengths to get right the creative aspects of his films without bothering about the box office returns- there is a reason people call him a mad creative genius and applaud him even if they do not like all his films. I read the articles, people are wondering that if a director like him also did not do this and pursues box office instead, then could anyone else have done it?

I am sure PC has done a good job, and the trailer is rocking. I really hope the film does well. But the questions from the critics are valid and will keep coming. If the makers decided to compromise on these points for BO acclaim, then I guess they will have to live with these questions too.

yes and I don't have any issues with her playing Mary Kom anyway.

Don't jump at someone's throat because they point your factual error out.

My point was, ben is not just an "Angrez"

I am a Bangladeshi.

Bangladesh is the reason why North East India is almost separated from mainland India. We, Bangladeshis mostly look like Indians but there are Manipuris, Tibeto-Burmans also in Bangladesh but they are usually nowhere seen in TV dramas and cinemas. Absolutely isolated group. They have their own culture. Don't like to mix with Bengalis.
