Javed Akhtar, who's written the lyrics for 'Umrao Jaan', cannot get over Aishwarya Rai's performance in the film.

"The character of Amiran has so much dignity, in spite of being brought up in a brothel. Aishwarya is perfect for the enigmatic personality that is required of the character," he says, explaining further, "Aishwarya is beautiful, but she is not being cast because she is a classic beauty. It is more her personality that comes through. Nobody can really know someone like Aishwarya. There are layers to her personality apart from certain amount of vibrancy. I think Aishwarya is perfect for Amiran's character."
