Did Yash Chopra create sympathy for SRK in Darr? - Page 5

Darr has to be the only blockbuster that hurt the lead actor more than it helped him. Yash Chopra wanted Sunny to be the new face of Yash Raj films after Bachchan and had signed him for a 3 film deal of which Darr was the first one. He did in fact offer him a choice of either role and Sunny chose the good guy. That was his first mistake. A film like Darr was always going to favor the antoganist but those were the days, when heroes didn't play negative roles. His second mistake was showing his displeasure in public against Yash Chopra and vowing never to work with him again. His loss. Not only did it sour the relationship between the Deol's and the Chopra's, it made SRK a mainstay in the Chopra & the Johar camp.
SRK's portrayal was nothing special, anti-heroes always get more accolades, be it Sunil Shetty in Dhadkan or Sunny himself in Jeet. But unlike Deol, Akshay or Salman, didn't make a big mess of the situation.
The main bone of contention was the climax and this is where Yash Chopra lied to Sunny. In the version he gave to Sunny, he was supposed to beat Shahrukh to death and there wasn't going to be any sympathy created with his shirt opening with Kiran written over his chest & the sad tune. That version was shot but never included. Instead, Chopra decided to include the alternate which created a lot of sympathy for Rahul.
Darr is the most important film in SRK's career IMO. It gave him his first big hit, he completely overshadowed a superstar but most importantly became Yash Chopra's blue eyed boy who wouldn't work with anyone but him hence.

But I think towards the end Yash Chopra did create sympathy for the villain. SRK does not beat or try to rape Juhi even when he has her with him after stabbing Sunny Deol. He waits outside all the time when Juhi locks herself up. In final fight with him and Sunny, he stops retaliating the moment he hears Juhi ask Sunny to kill him. He gives such an alarmed look then! Keeps getting beaten up. Before breathing his last he asks Juhi to forgive him.

The best songs of the film feature SRK. In end also the Tu hai meri Kiran plays slowly when SRK dies.

While I feel SRK gave his best in the film, I can't help but feel Yash Chopra deliberately handled final sequences on the boat to sort of justify Rahul. I feel he even added angle of psychological problem due to dead mother to make audience feel for Rahul.

Sunny Deol's and everybody else's character is rather flat compared to cleverly crafted Rahul.

Maybe Sunny was right in bashing Yash Chopra in his interviews later. I think even Juhi is just an item in this film and it's all about Rahul Mehra.

Not taking away anything from Shahrukh. But do you think other characters were properly fleshed out by Chopra in Darr?

I think on the basis of storyline it properly flashed. In all moives like Bazigar, Darr , ramjaane etc. SRK is main character and the whole story revolves around him. Although he is negative character hero, the audience sympathy will be with him like reasons , why his character developed so etc. he face ultimate consequence in the end. In Darr SRK role is obsessive lover one , it is not lust . He loves her so much but cant profess the same in that process of clearing obstacle he harm every other side characters. Regarding harming Juhi , that is not his motive. When he reveal himself in the end of movie and realize how much juhi hate him, want to see him dead, he gave up . End will be always tragic in all those antihero roles.

Regarding role of sunny, its obvious when SRK is central character then those other character who play the role of hero their part is as a side character or may be a positive moral based one. Like in Bazigar or ramjaane hardly there is focus on the hero. SRK took the risk of choosing the tragic characters where he is badly beaten , face worst kind of death , which other like AK , sunny etc. never choose to play . As they may feel that will harm their hero image, ultimately they lost in this process.

Regarding stalking part may be it little bit glorified the same . As it depends which part will the viewer accept , like no one care for the ultimate consequences in the movie or moral shown at the end. In our school days i have seen many just wrote name on the hand with blade that too school kids, just like SRK wrote kkkiran on chest. May be reason can be hand will visible to other 😆
