@meribaat.
SRK does have string of murders to his credit in Darr. Watch it again.😆

Sunny was not given a choice. He was always supposed to play the navy officer. Never heard of him being asked to choose between hero and villain.

Baazigar is justified in my eyes due to Ajay's childhood. He lost his father and baby sister. What was her fault? He just got even with Madan Chopra. His act of throwing Shilpa off the terrace and other murders he commits are brutal. But flashbacks kind of justify him. Though I have mixed opinion on his character now given how brutally he killed everyone. He too died a brutal death. Karmic justice maybe...

It is only Anjaam where I felt nothing for him.🤢 Vijay is despicable.

Bollywood tends to almost always add an angle that creates sympathy for the obsessive lover. It usually happens when a leading actor who usually plays the 'hero' takes up a villainous role.

There's something about the way SRK emotes that makes you feel for him. Like even in Anjaam, he's a maha Ahole but towards the end I still felt for him a bit. I don't know if it was don't unintentional or not but I do think the ending was tweaked. I felt for Rahul way before the end. Of course I was much younger at the time and Rahul had more charisma than Sunny, but he wasn't so much bad as he was mad. So I guess the sympathy for him was already there and then SRK created his magic.

He def got the better songs. I mean Meri Kiran was a rage from what I was told.

Yes, that song was constantly on telly. It was a huge hit.

I read somewhere that Sunny said he read a different script and the end product was something else.If its not true then the whole character sketch was in the script and Sunny should have understood whats the story is all about.But if its true then probably when every other bigger stars refused to act as Rahul then Yash Chopra's love for the character increased more and he wanted to show how brilliant the negative character was to all those people who rejected to play that character.So slowly he added much more to that character.And Shahrukh's acting added much more depth to it.

Or Yash Chopra might have wanted to show it from Rahul's point of view.Just like Bazigar,even though Shilpa's character was killed and she did nothing wrong to anyone still at the end we completely forget Shilpa's character and feel sad for the killer who killed an innocent person.I didn't cry when Shilpa's character died but I cried when Shahrukh's character died.

But for me, I didn't feel bad or sympathize for Rahul the way I did in Bazigar even if I slightly sympathized when he stabbed Sunny's character I lost all sympathy.In my opinion it was Shahrukh's brilliant acting in it which gathered accolades not that character.The character was negative and he deserved dying,that I felt after watching it.That means Yash Chopra didn't try to create sympathy for that character.

@Bold

Very valid points. Either it was Chopra's desire to show Rahul's POV than a story of a terrorised girl (and harassed couple later). Or he made Rahul Mehra deliberately better fleshed out and crafted him to prove a point to all those who rejected his film. For SRK it was a huge break as a newbie and he sunk every tooth into the role.

@Bold 😳

For obvious reasons (See avi) Baazigar is a film I was rewatched multiple times and a fave. I have not watched Darr in years, must do. Somehow I thought there were no murders 😲.

I like Anjaam second because of Madhuri mostly, not SRK. Darr is mostly because of the 'ki-ki-ki-ran' I remember.

I did not follow BW when Darr and Baazigar happened, but I read somewhere Sunny was given a choice, but the narration was what was screwed and so Sunny chose the navy (?) guy role. Just don't quote me on that, my memory is rather fuzzy 😆

See, it could be casting too. Sunny is brave, chivalrous guy who rescues you I can buy, but Sunny Paaji moping for a woman and stalking her ?? Even if he is like that in RL I just don't buy it while I can imagine SRK even now...That is why Darr would have never worked with him for me.

I could only buy Deol pappa and sons in straight macho roles. I could not buy them as lovers though Sunny only in Beetab. In Gupt I had and have a hard time believing Kajol killed for Bobby, while I can easily buy Kajol killing Bobby 😛 😆

Not only for leading actors but even supporting ones. Nana Patekar owned Agnisakshi! I was more amused by his eccentricity than terrified (though the kind of man he was I should have been terrified. I cannot imagine meeting such a man in real life even as an acquaintance).
He is abusive, unpredictable, stalker, wife beater, marital rapist but in end he shoots himself and says something like he is freeing his wife forever. Sympathy trope added!
I should be liking Jackie Shroff more for giving new life to the heroine and accepting her despite her past. But I watch it for Nana, his dialogues and act.😆

Well we were suppose to feel for his character I don't think that was ever hidden, so the end wasn't a surprise to me. We have fans who wanted Kiran to end up with Rahul that's how much of a sympathy was created for the character.

As for Deol, idk get why he's mad did they narrate it differently to him? the way audience accepted SRK I don't even think Yash Chopra was expecting it, he was suppose to be the underdog.

@meribaat
I honestly never saw even any rumour about Sunny being given a choice between villain and hero. 😕
Murders are there in Darr by SRK. He even breaks down a lift. And gloats how many he killed just for Kiran.😆

Deols don't make for romantic roles I agree except Dharmendra. Seen some of his old films from 60s on classic movie channels. He was very convincing. He has some of the best romantic songs to his credit. It is due to his eyes and smile.😳 He has less rugged face than his sons, especially Sunny who looks too aggressive.

what yash was able to create was.the mental/sickness of srk. i don't think he could have ever raped juhi, even with an opportunity. i felt he was more in his fantasy land with juhi, but not to harm her.
and yes i kinda felt sorry for his sickness in the end.
