Mardaani-A case of gender stereotyping?

This isn't my rant. Read it on storypick. Now discuss if you want to.

A blogging site told bloggers to blog for meeting Rani Mukherjee by blogging about 'mardaani' women you have come across. Obviously as one of the social media tactics to garner support and get into the audience's hearts. I have no problem with this. It is a good initiative, but:

I am not going to write it.
Why?

Read this:
Meet Shivani Shivaji Roy.
Tough times were made for her. She fought.
Against the odds, against the tide.
She made a difference. She fought like every woman should.
She made every war personal.
That's why we call her Mardaani

Um. why?

One thing really is unsettling- why is that when a woman is robust, aggressive, rugged and powerful- she is called 'mardaani' or man like? This puts equal pressure on men , I think. It makes MEN think too, that if they aren't either of those things. they aren't manly enough. Why is that certain human characteristics which is entirely subjective to your own innate qualities and your surroundings, is generalized into typical notions?

Some gender related things are given hype and emphasis to such an extent that they become natural in our day to day life. Just because she can slap men, holds a gun and fires like a pro, wears a checked shirt and jeans, doesn't make her man-like. Just because a man likes to spend a lot of time shopping doesn't make him woman-like. It is just their personal choices which are marred by public stereotypes.

If today I wear a pink skirt , and still beat up a man, what will you call me? Something in between? A person going through sheer identity crisis? Because obviously, my clothes don't go with the characteristics I have.

I never liked Subhadhra Kumari Chauhan's poem for the same reason. The very first few lines call Laxmi Bai 'mardaani' as if women on their own can never be powerful. It is men's job and it is their job which they are performing. So in a way, you are telling me that IF i stand up to myself, I am doing it like a man. If I cry and whine in a corner, I am being what I am supposed to be.

A man cries, he is a sissy, a pussy. If he likes to bake cakes, and not ride a bike, he is such a girl. If he is hot, handsome, has a swimmers' body, but likes to cook, that is a complete package of a MAN. Remove the first two notions, just make him a simple guy who likes to cook, whey, what a mother's boy! Such a cutie! You may as well go onto imagine him playing with dolls and a kitchen set when he was 4.

Do you see what is the problem here? We are humans who try to label and simplify and dumb things down to suit our own needs and aspirations. We cannot LIVE without having a name, a tag, a definition for something .And as everyone has their own process, it leads to labels which are entirely at odds with each other. This is what is happening.

What is the solution- Don't call me a manly person if I fought and made a difference. Don't call my guy friend a sissy if he likes to watch a drama and does not follow FIFA. It is good to have viewpoints, but not when they are so subjectively dysfunctional, leading to a defective society. In simple words: Don't take pride in making an ass of yourself. Because that is what you are doing. Being an ass.
