So what is the correct term that is not seen as offensive? I usually prefer the medical terms as they are accepted worldwide and deemed non-offensive but I tried searching many a times before but couldn't find a term that describes people from Chinese, Korean, Japanese etc. region in terms of their race.
Now that I come to think of it, I wonder what race people from Southeast Asia i.e. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh belong to?
The racial classification model was: Mongloid, Negroid and Caucasoid. It's now disputed and widely out of use. The the term Mongloid is still used here and there for certain purposes I think, but in many circles it's considered derogatory.
For South Asia, it fell under Caucasoid as well as some other sub types for what they considered non Caucasian South Asians. It's been a long time since I've read up on this.
The broad term for Chinese, Korean, Japanese etc would be East Asian. For Indonesia, Thailand, Burma, Malaysia, etc, the broad term is South East Asian.
(On another note, Caucasian really is not synonymous with white, but it came to be after the United States ruling versus an Indian man who challenged his status as a non citizen as he was anthropologically Caucasian. The US Supreme Court ruled that he wasn't considered white so couldn't be classified as Caucasian nor could he have citizenship.)
