To understand this we need to understand the cultural differences in the North and South. There are many factors at play here.
In short, Rajini will always be a super star like Spider man or Bat man. He has the highest number of fans across the world and is the top earning actor. He has not done any endorsements till date and still makes 40-50 crore per movie.
The reason he is loved is apart from his onscreen style...his offscreen image. In South, humility and simplicity is considered star material. Rajini Sir is the epitome of both. He does not use a wig or dons tonnes of make up and wears Armani suits like his BW contemporaries. I have personally seen him catch a nap on the floor in a busy shooting spot using his towel as a bed sheet. Can we imagine any one do that? Not that this is the only correct way or this is the best thing to do - but this quality is what attracts South Indians to him in hoardes.
He is a unmatchable star and he has fans all across the world. Japanese whistle and throw yens at the screens when he comes on screens, Polish love his style and South Indians love everything about him.
We don't care if he is national star or not and we are trying to shove him down anyone's throats in North India. What will he do if SRK and KJ fan boy him? He is as humble as ever.
Take it or leave it. Ponder about it endlessly...but he is the biggest star for atleast 10 million people all over the world.
