When Amitabh had accident in shooting of Coolie and was hospitalised it was national tragedy of sorts. All India Radio was giving regular updates on his condition. Temples were conducting yajnas praying for his recovery. Prayers were organised at churches and gurudwaras also. Fans had huddled outside his hospital. They'd walk barefoot to temples, do all poojas, keep fasts for Amitabh.

That was never seen before phenomenon in India. So much devotion to a film star.

After Amitabh recovered he had to address public via Doordarshan to quell this nationwide unrest.

Even in 2005 (or 2006) when Amitabh was hospitalised over some heart problems it sent media and fans in a tizzy. So many prayer campaigns for him. Every religious place was holding poojas, yajnas, ardas, akhand paath, prayers.

Amitabh's fans worship him. A group of fans also run a temple dedicated to him, call him only Prabhu and call themselves bhakts. It was shown on TV how they travel barefoot all the way to Mumbai for his darshan every year on his birthday.

So don't say such fan following is not there for any other actor.

When Amitabh entered politics he won by a landslide. He left only after controversies like Bofors.

Even today every Sunday a bus full of fanatics lands up at Jalsa and fans queue up for a glimpse of Amitabh.

Rajinikanth fans behave as if other stars have no fan following at all.

I think Amitabh was actin on some university location.. there was so many youngsters were on lookers.. for the fighting scene Amitabh had stuntman but he cared abt his image in front of youth and decided to stunts himself. Punit Issar ( A guy who played Duryodhan in BR chopra's mahabharat.. or recenlty the in Krrish the instructor of Priyanka and gang.. (bhoot wala scenes). He was the goona in that scene.. he hit Amitabh on his face.. What went wrong is after that Amitabh had to slide a long table... but his belly hit the corner of the table. HUge blood loss.. Breach Candy hospital gave him another life.

INDIA were at standstill. Its all abt Amitabh in media. If he had died it wud be bigger shock than ... i will leave that for u.

Coolie was released and the accident scenes were showed in slo mo.. with pause. Superhit. I think Amitabh played a Muslim guy in it.. There Haji Ali Masjid there.. and he wants to go to Hajj ( aided by Indian gvrmnt its so cheap).. He cant due to illness and he gives his ticket to a old musling baba.

Well, thats my memory. Oh yeah..

One guy from UP came all the way down to Mumabi to meet Amitabh.. it took almost 10 or more days. How did he get there? Shantang dandvat pranaam. He lies down on the roadside on his tummy.. stretch his to do namaskar.. mark where his hands were , get up and lie down again from that mark. He actually freaking did it. 😲 When he met AB.. AB was so overwhelmed he wanted to give him something.. he didnt accept anything. 😲

This is a true story. I wish Amitabh long long life.. But we know we all have depart oneday.. when he does it will be a Public Holiday. Lataji is in the same category.

See, I have grown up with Rajni and was exposed to BW only in my teen years. But even I can explain why people like Amitabh. The angry young man, the voice, the way he speaks about a variety of topics, how eloquent he is, his love of poetry, his connection to the Gandhi family and so on. But ask me about Rajni and I draw a blank. I would have expected people to have the kind of fanaticism for Kamal for instance because I can explain it better. But the only thing I can explain for Rajni is his screen persona.

Most every actor even if I don't like them, I "get" why people like them. Rajni I have never understood the appeal though I have seen his movies and been around people who like him my entire life. Even they cannot answer why they like him, they just do. That is the difference to me anyways.

I may create North Vs South debate here..
But North accepted Hindi as National language.. South never did. Is it a kind of rebellion? The thing is south never united themselves. MOhanlal, Mamuti, Sidharth, Rajni, Kamal, and God knows how many superstars came to BW and went..

Nope, I think it is more that the South had powerful and passionate personalities who were passionate about art and cinema in general and created dynamic regional cinema. I don't know anything about the regional cinemas of the north, but in the beginning the South industry was concentrated in Chennai. We had actors like Sivaji Ganesan, Akkineni Nageswara Rao and so on who acted in Tamil and Telugu movies. We have people like Karunanidhi who wrote powerful dialogues and screenplays. Then the Telugu industry moved to Hyderabad. The two men who were responsible for that were N.T.Rama Rao and Akkineni Nageshwara Rao IIRC. They established studios and film schools and powerful acting dynasties. RajKumar was big in the Kannada industry and Mammooty, Mohanlal are and were big in Malayalam.

The thing is the South regional industries have been powerful enough and have an audience to sustain them which I am not sure the North states have.

North is united in BW.

Why do south superstars try to make in BW and fails?

I think if one has a certain level of success, they get offers from BW. but if they don't have the same level of success in BW, they go back down south where they are superstars. But there are many who are from the South and made it big.

Sridevi is the biggest example I can think of off the top of my head. Asin has been successful. Prabhu Deva has had success in BW But I think for most if they don't get the same reception or more importantly the kind of money and creative control they can get, they go back.

But established BW actors also go down South. Ash actually made her film debut in a Tamil movie and works repeatedly with Tamil directors and actors. Kajol made at least one Tamil movie I can think off the top of my head. Tabu has acted in the Telugu and Tamil industries.
Rajni has had cameos in Hollywood movies too.

IMO it is actually a two way street though tilted more towards BW in terms of actors moving back and forth and films in terms of remakes towards the South.
