When Amitabh had accident in shooting of Coolie and was hospitalised it was national tragedy of sorts. All India Radio was giving regular updates on his condition. Temples were conducting yajnas praying for his recovery. Prayers were organised at churches and gurudwaras also. Fans had huddled outside his hospital. They'd walk barefoot to temples, do all poojas, keep fasts for Amitabh.
That was never seen before phenomenon in India. So much devotion to a film star.
After Amitabh recovered he had to address public via Doordarshan to quell this nationwide unrest.
Even in 2005 (or 2006) when Amitabh was hospitalised over some heart problems it sent media and fans in a tizzy. So many prayer campaigns for him. Every religious place was holding poojas, yajnas, ardas, akhand paath, prayers.
Amitabh's fans worship him. A group of fans also run a temple dedicated to him, call him only Prabhu and call themselves bhakts. It was shown on TV how they travel barefoot all the way to Mumbai for his darshan every year on his birthday.
So don't say such fan following is not there for any other actor.
When Amitabh entered politics he won by a landslide. He left only after controversies like Bofors.
Even today every Sunday a bus full of fanatics lands up at Jalsa and fans queue up for a glimpse of Amitabh.
Rajinikanth fans behave as if other stars have no fan following at all.

I may create North Vs South debate here..
But North accepted Hindi as National language.. South never did. Is it a kind of rebellion? The thing is south never united themselves. MOhanlal, Mamuti, Sidharth, Rajni, Kamal, and God knows how many superstars came to BW and went..

Nope, I think it is more that the South had powerful and passionate personalities who were passionate about art and cinema in general and created dynamic regional cinema. I don't know anything about the regional cinemas of the north, but in the beginning the South industry was concentrated in Chennai. We had actors like Sivaji Ganesan, Akkineni Nageswara Rao and so on who acted in Tamil and Telugu movies. We have people like Karunanidhi who wrote powerful dialogues and screenplays. Then the Telugu industry moved to Hyderabad. The two men who were responsible for that were N.T.Rama Rao and Akkineni Nageshwara Rao IIRC. They established studios and film schools and powerful acting dynasties. RajKumar was big in the Kannada industry and Mammooty, Mohanlal are and were big in Malayalam. The thing is the South regional industries have been powerful enough and have an audience to sustain them which I am not sure the North states have.
