Do heroines have any real star power in BW?

Real star power would be the fans going out to see their star films on first day.

in that sense,No women don't have any real star power.

i would also blame it to the fact that generally women are not interested in movies,even if they are the ratio of such women who would go out to see movies on their own is very less compared to guys.

But I beg to differ. Besharam gave 20 crore opening with pethetic songs and rubbish music , and jai ho joined 100 crores club with rubbish movie . If same movies we replace with deepika or katrina in actress place . It would have done atlest 50- 100 crores more . And every movie needs an actress with no actress a movie will be bore.

Every movie needs an actress but actresses are replaceable. If not Katrina then Deepika, or Anushka etc. And certainly not even a Rani/Preity, Madhuri toh door ki baat hai.

I doubt it. As you said, both movies had great openings which was due to male stars. Movie sustains if it has good WOM. Besharam had terrible WOM and Jai Ho below average as well. It could have done 20-25 cr more in the opening week with star heroine, but certainly not 50-100 crore. that would put Jai Ho in ETT league which majority masses loved.

It varies ..i just know with Kabir Katrina gets good roles like in ETT Katrina and most likely in his next with Salman and her role will be good!!!

But we did see Sunny leone do well but i think xxx in it help get male crowds out, but agree bollywood is male driven!!

With Madhuri's return to India...and her successful stints on JDJ...I always thought she could be one of the actresses to break the mold and finally do something different.

I mean I'm not saying Hollywood is any better...but you do have Meryl Streep still being nominated for Oscars.

Unfortunately Madhuri's comeback has had a luke warm reception box office wise..not even that.

Again...it has to do with the scripts...she can't fit into the young girly roles...and there aren't any impactful scripts out there written for her age. I was looking forward to seeing Gulab Gang but still haven't done so because the critics panned it...and so I out it on the things to do later list.

I guess people like to see her on TV...looking pretty and smiling...and the male guests and contestants will continue to patronize and drool over her...(which sometimes is so over the top it feels blatantly scripted)...but they won't pay the money to see her on the big screen.

Perhaps it is just a reflection of how society views women in general...as eye candy.

With the exception of Katrina.. no other current heroine has it. Katrina has it all, box-office pull and a huge fanbase. People love her and she deserves it.

Times are changing... and thank god for that. As much as I don't like her, maybe even Deepika will have a proper star power in the next few years.

I also want to say that Deepika's a wayy bigger star than Katrina at the moment. Katrina had Dhoom 3 but noone cared abt her whereas Deepika managed to give a hit like Ram-Leela with someone like Ranveer (zero stardom IMO) and also Dpad deserves alot of credit for CE, Cocktail, rubbish Race 2's success. Currently I would say Deeps is a bigger star than Ranbir Kapoor.

Yes women rarely go out to watch movies on their own. Even if they are earning themselves, still paying power is vested in men of the family. Women also eye the hero more and notice actress only for style or beauty. Often women themselves remark how old a certain actress looks or how is she still working at this age, despite marriage or why not married etc.
