What person means is that how is Arjun's character(Krish) referred to as fair skinned in movie when he seems more dark-skinned compared to Alia's character (Ananya)

Well Ananya is not conventional Tamilian girl... She is described in book to be totally different and is also beautiful and fair skinned

Also since book revolves around tale of Chetan Bhagat's love life, Chetan is comparatively more dark than his wife

Also regarding Krish's mother comment, what she meant was that her son is fairer than rest of Tamilian boys

The book mentions Ananya as a very fair skinned girl. Though most South Indians are of darker skin tone, some of the caste are really fair. Like in Tamilians I have seen that most Iyers and Iyengars (TamBrahms) are really fair.Like Sridevi,Hema Malini, Vyjayanthimala all are Tam Brahms.

Apparently Alia Bhatt has Tamil Brahmin roots. Someone in the guess who thread said that. And Arjun is Punjabi, so perfect casting ?

Ananya's character is supposed to be fair and pretty. Chetan Bhagat's wife is pretty fair atleast fairer than him.
