Ragini MMS 2 Opens To A Fantastic Occupancy At The Box Office

March 21st, 2014 by Koimoi.com Team
Tweet

The much-awaited horror erotica Ragini MMS 2 starring Sunny Leone had a great start. The film received a huge response for the morning shows. Considering the first installment Ragini MMS was a successful venture, there are high chances for this sequel to work even better given the sensuous twist that Sunny is getting to the horror drama.

With a well appreciated soundtrack and hits such as Baby Doll and Yo Yo Honey Singh's Chaar Bottle Vodka this could be a plus point for the film to pull audiences. Also Ragini MMS 2 not being a out and out multiplex oriented film, it is expected to receive higher responses in single screen theaters as well.

There are also other releases this week such as Gang Of Ghosts, Lakshmi and Ankhon Dekhi but all three genres being completely different will fare depending on the word of mouth!

All in all, a good start for Ragini MMS 2 suggests that the film will be making a good business on its opening day.

Ragini MMS 2 Review

March 21st, 2014 by Mohar Basu

Ragini MMS 2 Movie Poster

Rating: 3/5 Stars (Three stars)

Star cast: Sunny Leone, Saahil Prem, Parvin Dabas, Karan Mehra, Sandhya Mirdul, Divya Dutta

Director: Bhushan Patel

What's Good: A strong backstory, great VFX and an aesthetic blend of erotica and horror as promised by the makers.

What's Bad: The usual Bollywood variants of noises and voices seem right out of a B-grade horror film.

Loo break: None.

Watch or Not?: Ragini MMS 2 is quite a pleasant surprise. It is not everyday that you begin your morning watching a Sunny Leone film, where she actually manages to bewilder you something close to a performance. Interestingly threaded with ample hair raising minutes, the film's ability to seem unrelentingly real is what makes it an entertaining watch. Not worth an Oscar but worth spending your popcorn over this weekend for sure.

The video of Ragini and Uday's escapades in the haunted house gets viral. Uday's death and Ragini's faltering mental state from the trauma of the incident makes for the fodder of an interesting story. A filmmaker decides to make a movie based on Ragini's unfortunate incident. Signing in Sunny (Sunny Leone) for the role, they go back to the same house to shoot for it. What follows is way more massive than expected. It initially begins as minor faulty incidents but it all points to the presence of the supernatural spirit who was killed unceremoniously by her family on the pretext of being a witch. And she still isn't at peace.

Ragini MMS 2 Review: Script Analysis

The film kicks off exactly where it had let loose in the last edition. Viewing the prequel is a must to prep yourself up to understand the magnanimity of the film's details. After Uday dies in the first edition of the film and Ragini is sent off to mental asylum for treatment, what becomes a sensation is the leaked MMS which interests a filmmaker to make a movie based on the same incidents with his actress Sunny who is looped in to play the role of Ragini in the film. For me, it was the lingering fear elements from the last edition that created the milieu of horror. The mere vision of the house where the hair rising incident had occurred was enough to get the tempo going for this film.

Though the writers haven't been exactly original in their imagination, they atleast have luckily not been lazy enough to tear it off and stitch it up as it is. Nuanced efforts have been taken to make the horror erotica fit aptly within the story's framework. Quite like the last edition the built up is well written for the first half which makes the second half even scarier as things begin to fall in place relevantly. Expect to be petrified way more than what you are anticipating because the story has its moments of utter shriek-out-mad spooky moments.

In a lot of ways, this time the film's story is way more settled than the last edition. May be the scriptwriter worked hard on the evident loopholes of the last one and rectified it well enough to conjure up something more logically fearful. In the first half itself the incidents related to history is made clear which comes handy in the film's second half where it plays a primary role in acting catalyst for genuinely well-done climax.

I was particularly impressed that unlike most horror films, Ragini MMS 2 isn't all grim. The parody moments can be taken in good humor and Sunny Leone is terrific in the one scene where she fakes an orgasm in an attempt to poke fun at herself. I think it was a good decision to use the erotic feel as a respite for fun in this film which works in its favor. Writers Suhani Kanwar and Tanveer Bookwala have got every ingredient right that makes for a captivating horror film and as much as I hate watching such paranormal thrillers, quite like Ragini MMS, this one too walks off with being a disturbingly freaky treat of sorts!

Ragini MMS 2 Review: Star Performances

Sunny Leone isn't an actress but it cannot be very difficult when you are almost playing yourself. Perhaps that is what gives her this sense of confidence which is quite a revelation going by her work in Bollywood.

Sandhya Mridul who is quite a delightful actress otherwise borders on being repetitive. She is undoubtedly great in many scenes but the same act all through the run time gets a tad bit on your nerves.

Parvin Dabbas is zestful and his energy is channelized rightly in the film which makes his character's tone and hue correct.

Divya Dutta is winsome except barring the climax. Somehow the fault lies more with the director who guided her to turn predictable. Chanting quotes and mantras is more funny than frightening!

Karan Mehra was a delight and is flattering as the full-of-himself, television star. He made for the most hilarious scenes in the film and puts up a great show!

Ragini MMS 2 Review: Direction, Editing and Screenplay

Bhushan Patel quite manages to play well on his imperfections and make a decently disturbing film to his credit. It is quite an unconventional horror film for Bollywood, being a horrex of sorts. When the film starts off there are many misspelled scattered moments but with the second half the film manages to conjure up a bewitching tale that is fearsome for being based on real incidents. Patel wastes a lot of energy in making wooden doors creak and make voices screech and even worse play the too-desperate-to-scare-you music over and over again too many times.

Subtlety in Bollywood horror movies is never on the menu and was hence not expected but Patel's resolve to deliver a taut and engaging affair lacing horror with the right dosage of sex doesn't go in vain.. Dialogues like Tum po*no se Ritupo*no kab ban gayi' does offend but if allow the film to be outrageous it isn't an entirely terrible watch.

Ragini MMS 2 Review: The Last Word

Ragini MMS 2 is far more lucid than Ragini MMS. Though the first half isn't exactly remarkable, the build up to the second half, the well used titillating show and the tight eldritch climax is what makes the film a worthwhile film here. Do not expect anything beyond mindless entertainment because this film is just the horror variation of a commercial potboiler. Don't attach logic, don't expect intelligence, just get entertained. Since I have ingested my share of it, I am going with a 3/5

Ragini MMS 2 Opens Fairly Well

Friday 21 March 2014 13.00 IST

Box Office India Trade Network

Ragini MMS 2 took a decent start of around 40% on average. The collections were good to decent in Mumbai and Delhi/UP circuits while mass circuits had good opening numbers. These type of films always have a chance at certain single screens across the country but Ragini MMS 2 has managed a reasonably good opening at multiplexes.

The opening morning figures are better than Hasee Toh Phasee, Highway, Shaadi Ke Side Effects, Queen and Bewakoofiyan.

The first day should come out better than all these films with the India v Pakistan cricket match in the evening the only obstacle. Shaadi Ke Side Effects also had a India v Pakistan cricket match on its first day and Ragini MMS is from the same production house as that film.

The other releases Ankhon Dekhi, Lakshmi and Gang Of Ghosts all took very dull openings with Gang of Ghosts being the best of the three.

BO update: 'Ragini MMS-2' opens very well!

By Taran Adarsh, March 21, 2014 - 15:26 IST

Sex sells. But sex + horror is a lethal combo. And sex + horror + hit soundtrack + Sunny Leone is definitely the deadliest combo ever. The opening response to RAGINI MMS-2 confirmed this fact as the morning shows -- at multiplexes and single screens -- opened to a heartening response. Sure, the business is bound to be affected thanks to the cricket match [India vs Pakistan], but the super start and positive word of mouth has placed the film in the comfort zone. However, GANG OF GHOSTS was not as lucky. Despite ample promotion, the opening response was lacklustre everywhere. Ditto for ANKHON DEKHI and LAKSHMI, which carry strong word of mouth. However, these three films will have to gross impressive numbers over the weekend to amass a respectable total. Meanwhile, QUEEN, now in its third week, is expected to give a tough fight to these three films.

WOW NICE REVIEWS FOR A SUNNY LEONE'S FILM😆 HERE'S DNA

Film review: Sunny Leone's 'Ragini MMS 2' stays true to its genre

Friday, 21 March 2014 - 8:18am IST | Place: Mumbai | Agency: DNA

Film: Ragini MMS 2
Cast: Sunny Leone, Parvin Dabas, Sandhya Mridul, Karan Mehra, Saahil Prem
Director: Bhushan Patel
Rating: ***

What's it about

Early on in the first half, we are told that Ragini MMS 2 is a 'horrex' (horror+sex) film! And the makers leave no stone unturned to make sure it proves to be one.

Picking up from its prequel, the second chapter begins with Ragini being locked up in an asylum. Parvin Dabas plays a director wanting to make a film based on her story with Sunny Leone as the lead.

His idea is to shoot at the same location where the supernatural incident took place. A writer working on the project senses something is wrong. What follows is lots of skin show, some genuinely spooky moments and a climax that surprisingly doesn't fall flat!

What's hot

Thankfully Ragini MMS 2 has a solid backstory to fall back on which plays itself quite well in the second half. Not falling in the trap of letting the cliches get the better of them, the writers have managed to put together an interesting history to the happenings in the house.

Also the references to the first film and characters help in setting up the right mood. Production values in terms of paying attention to the make up and VFX are top notch.

Despite the inspiration from Western horror shows and films, Patel manages to make those scenes his own. Those wanting to see Sunny in all her splendour and 'more' won't be disappointed!

Surprisingly Leone manages to show a spark of brilliance in a scene where she parodies herself and fakes an orgasm! The idea of letting her play herself as opposed to someone else works in the film's favour.

Baby Doll and Chaar Botal Vodka have already topped the charts and add to the sizzle quotient on the big screen. Karan Mehra as a self-obsessed TV actor is hilarious!

Using sarcasm and letting the characters have a laugh at themselves was a wise move in bringing in the humour in an otherwise dark plot. Also fans of American Horror Story will be pleasantly impressed by the opening credits which have been majorly inspired by the cult mini-series.

What's not

Creaking doors, muffled voices in the corridor and jarring background music might work in a Ramsay film, but it only stifles whatever little progress Ragini makes on the scare-o-meter.

Sandhya Mridul's caricature act of playing a C grade starlet gets annoying after a while. Also Sunny's track with Saahil seemed abrupt, especially when the need to break into a sultry rain song arises out of nowhere!

Divya Dutta's doctor act falls through in the climax when she, like every other catalyst in a horror film, resorts to chanting some mantras to resolve the possession.

Dialogues aren't written to win a Pultizer so expect to be baffled at some of the lines! ('tum po*no se Ritupo*no kab ban gayi?')

What to do

Whether you are a Sunny Leone fan or not, Ragini MMS 2 still manages to raise a few scares and stay true to its genre.

RAGINI MMS - 2

Balaji Telefilms Ltd. and Alt Entertainment's Ragini MMS - 2 (A) is a horror-sex film. Sequel to Ragini MMS, the film is about film director Rocks (Parvin Dabas) who wants to make a film on the Ragini MMS scandal in which Uday and Ragini had gone on a secret getaway to a mansion to make out. Since the mansion was haunted, the ghost there had killed Uday but Ragini, after being traumatised by the ghost, had managed to escape from there. Ragini (Kainaz Motivala) is currently in a mental asylum and since Satya (Sahil Prem) is the only script writer whom Ragini's mother (Gargi Patel) trusts, Rocks hires his services as the script writer. Despite Ragini's mother warning Satya about the mansion being haunted, Rocks decides to shoot his film in the very mansion where the Ragini MMS scandal had taken place. The main cast and crew also stay in the same mansion. Rocks has signed Sunny (Sunny Leone) to play the lead role of Ragini in his film.

Rocks, Sunny and the rest of the cast and crew reach the haunted house and start shooting in it, unaware that a crew member has been murdered by the ghost the previous day. Strange things start happening to Sunny in the mansion as she gets visions of ghosts in the night. Maddy (Karan Mehra), another actor in the film, also feels, there's something eerie about the house but he isn't able to understand what it is. Soon, Sunny and writer Satya become fond of one another and fall in love.

One night, Rocks, lecherous as he is, enters Sunny's room to spend the night in bed with her but, to his misfortune, Sunny is possessed by the ghost. Within minutes of Rocks making advances towards Sunny, the ghost kills him in a way that it appears as if Sunny had murdered him brutally. Monali (Sandhya Mridul), another actress in the film, panics when she sees Sunny sitting over Rocks' battered body.

Even while the shooting was underway, Ragini's psychiatrist, Dr. Meera Dutta (Divya Dutta), had been researching on the Ragini MMS scandal to understand what had happened to Ragini and how she could be cured. Her research helps her learn that in the Patwardhan mansion in which Ragini and Uday had gone, a woman had allowed a tantrik to kill her two little daughters as she had thought, their deaths would bring alive her little son who had fallen into a well and died. Nothing of the sort had happened; instead, the villagers had burnt the woman to death after mistaking her to be the murderer of her two daughters since the tantrik had escaped with her jewellery after killing the girls. Dr. Dutta hits upon an idea to free the house of the spirits and thereby cure Ragini. She is unaware that Ragini had already been murdered in the mental asylum a few days back.

Actress Monali and writer Satya are in terrible panic when Dr. Dutta reaches the haunted house, soon after Rocks is murdered. Satya has understood that his girlfriend, Sunny, is possessed. Together, Dr. Dutta, Satya and Monali try to finish the spirit and free Sunny but the spirit refuses to leave Sunny's body and instead wants to kill everyone in the house.

What happens thereafter? Does the ghost kill the occupants of the haunted house or are Dr. Dutta, Satya and Monali successful in eliminating the ghost? What happens to Sunny, Satya, Dr. Dutta, Monali, Maddy and the other cast and crew members? How did Ragini die in the mental asylum?

Suhani Kanwar and Tanveer Bookwala have indeed scripted a sequel, in the true sense of the term, of Ragini MMS. Very intelligently, they have mixed horror, sex and comedy in right doses in the story and screenplay to keep the audience thoroughly entertained, engrossed and engaged. Since the film being shot is based on the Ragini MMS scandal, Sunny, who plays Ragini, exposes absolutely uninhibitedly, often sleeping and roaming in the mansion in her innerwear. Kissing and love-making scenes are also woven into the drama to satiate the carnal appetite of the audience. The first half has some scenes of horror but such chilling scenes abound in the post-interval portion. However, the second part of the drama gets a bit routine. The characters of Monali and Maddy are so comical that their scenes evoke laughter every single time. No doubt, the comedy of Monali is class-appealing because it arises out of her broken English and faulty pronunciations but the city audience will go ga ga over the comedy. As for Maddy's comic scenes, they would appeal to the masses and the classes alike. The good part of the screenplay is that horror, sex and comedy have all been woven into the drama so seamlessly that nothing looks unwarranted or like an add-on. The sex scenes are just too titillating while the horror scenes scare the audience. As for the comedy, it will be loved by the youth. Ishita Moitra's dialogues are excellent and bold and will be adored by the youngsters and the masses. The censors have been very liberal and have permitted body exposure, love-making scenes as well as the f'-word on a number of occasions.

Sunny Leone looks pretty and glamorous and exposes her body to the hilt. She acts reasonably well. Her dance and uninhibited exposure in the Baby doll' song are supremely mass-appealing and will also find favour with the youth brigade. Sahil Prem is alright in the role of Satya. Parvin Dabas plays Rocks beautifully and gives a free performance. Sandhya Mridul is outstanding as Monali and evokes laughter every time she comes on the scene. She deserves the highest praise for her lovely performance. Karan Mehra plays to the gallery and impresses greatly with his comedy. Divya Dutta gives a dignified performance. Anita Hasnandani (as Gina), Soniya Mehra (as Tanya), Karan Taluja (as Kunal), Navnayak (as assistant to psychiatrist Meera Dutta), Gargi Patel, Geetanjali Kulkarni (as the mother), Sagar Talashikar (as the father) and Rani Vashishth (as the old woman) lend excellent support. Kainaz Motivala (as Ragini), baby Zaynah Samir Vatsani (as the twin girls who are killed by the tantrik), master Jasvir Saini (as the woman's son), Annapurna (as the maid), Bachchan Pachera (as the caretaker), Rajesh Sanoune (as the tantrik) and the rest are alright.

Bhushan Patel's direction is first-rate. He has made a film which does not lose its grip on the audience even for a minute, keeping them engrossed right from the word go'. He has balanced the drama with good doses of sex, horror and comedy so as to give every kind of audience entertainment to the fullest. Music (Meet Bros. Anjjan, Honey Singh, Pranay Rijia and Chirantan Bhatt) is a major plus point. The Baby doll' (music by Meet Bros. Anjjan) and Vodka' (by Honey Singh) songs are already hit numbers and will be thoroughly enjoyed by the viewers. Lyrics (Baby doll' by Kumaar; Vodka' by Ustad Bhagdarh Ali Khan; and by Manoj Yadav) are mass-appealing. Choreography of the Baby doll' song (by Uma-Gaiti) is extraordinary and will draw whistles from the crowds for the dollops of sex appeal on offer. Picturisation of the Vodka' song (by Atul Jindal) is also lovely. Amar Mohile's background music is excellent. Naren Gedia's camerawork deserves special mention. Abbas Ali Moghul's action and stunt scenes are thrilling. Sunil Nigvekar's sets are very appropriate. Tushar Shivan's editing is too sharp.

On the whole, Ragin MMS - 2 is a surefire hit as it has the deadly combination of sex, horror, comedy and hit music. It will please the masses and classes alike and will work wonders at the box-office from North to South and East to West.
