Film: "Ragini MMS 2"; Cast: Sunny Leone, Divya Dutta, Pravin Dabbas; Directed by Bhushan Patel; Rating:**

At least the first "Ragini" film gave us a sparkling performance by Rajkummar Rao, then called Yadav. This was the time when Rajkummar's Shahid was not even conceived. He was a "despo", much like the character of "Ragini MMS 2".

What did I come away with from "Ragini MMS 2"? A sinking feeling that the horror genre has run its course. Boredom is a beast that director Bhushan Patel is not up to fighting. Sex is brought in to liven up the semi-dead spirits. Steamy scenes are stuffed into this scare-fest since Sunny Leone top-lines the cast.

The script has been tailored to accommodate the lewd...sorry, lead's po*n backdrop. So when the film crew visits the same haunted house where the first "Ragini" film unfolded (why make the same mistake twice?!), Sunny, all voluptuous and popping all over the place, fakes an orgasm and tells an obnoxious fellow actor that po*n actresses too can act.

They sure can. Sunny, in her third Bollywood film, puts in quite an effort to look possessed by an evil 'chudail'. To be fair to this fornicating fraulein on an image-mending binge, the last half-hour finds her going into convulsions of terror. It's a climactic performance that pines to tell us that po*n stars can act.

Point made. Sunny is always good with climaxes. We can now move to the rest of the film which slithers through the hall of absurdity with a terrifying nonchalance. We have characters deliberately moving deeper and deeper into the darkest shadows of the haunting house inviting sure death. If you are so dumb as to go into empty rooms with creaky doors, then you might as well be dead.

Why are the characters in our horror films so intellectually challenged? "Ragini MMS 2" is specially suffused with morons. There is a hammy television actor who takes a naked shower with Sunny (once a po*n star) and then later jerks off in bed. He is so gross because guys in the "Ragini" series are destined to be just that.

In "Ragini MMS 1", Rajkummar Rao dragged his girlfriend to a haunted house to shoot a dirty MMS with her. In this instalment, there is an over-the-top film director (the talented Praveen Dabas) who wants to make a 'horrex' (a blend of horror and sex, much the same as the director of "Ragini MMS 2") .

He barges into Sunny's bedroom and barks: "Say you want me to f...k you"

Really! Is this the way directors talk to their leading ladies while making 'horrex' films? No wonder the Ramsays were savagely pulled up in Ashim Ahluwalia's "Miss Lovely".

"Ragini MMS 2" is so enamoured by its luscious leading lady's lusty past that it doesn't know what it wants to be. Neither horrifying nor sexy, the film is like a conflicted schizophrenic seeking a closure to his identity crisis blocking out the sunlight from all the windows in his home and running around in circles all over his darkened home.

Watching "Ragini MMS 2" is like playing Russian Roulette with the lights off. You know someone is pulling the trigger and trying to fire random shots at unidentified victims. Every trick from the horror genre is brought into use. By the time Divya Dutta is brought in as the latest avatar of Max von Sydow from "The Exorcist", the devil is too far gone to be tamed.

And I don't mean the chudail in this film.

The ApunKaChoice movie review of 'Ragini MMS 2'. Horror and Sex is a potent, safe combo. If Horror fails to scare the daylights out of you, Sex can always knock the pants off a hormonally charged viewer. Director Bhushan Patel and producer Ekta Kapoor dish out this formula in their Horrex' flick 'Ragini MMS 2'.

They succeed on one count. Sex. All thanks to Sunny Leone. They just about pass muster on the horror front.

Ragini MMS was about a young couple's dirty weekend at a desolate house gone wrong, thanks to a chudail. In the sequel, a filmmaker named Rocks (Pravin Dabbas) decides to tell the story of Ragini and ropes in the hot actress Sunny Leone to play the lead. To make the film real, they land up at the same haunted house to shoot, along with the supporting actors (Sandhya Mridul, Karan Mehra) and writer (Saahil Prem). What starts off as a raunchy shooting schedule with several romps turns into a nightmare when the chudail appears again, in the most unexpected way.

Trailer: Sunny Leone unleashes sex and horror in Ragini MMS 2'

Sunny Leone is in her elements in 'Ragini MMS 2'. She walks about the haunted house in choicest lingerie. She smooches people of both sexes, goes topless in a shower scene, and has steamy make-out sessions in bed, with the orgasmic oohs! and aahs! to boot.

There's also Divya Dutta playing a psychiatrist out to unravel the mystery of the chudail. As a result we get to know the backstory of the witch and how she came to be the harbinger of death.

'Ragini MMS 2' does pack in a few good scares but not enough to make you jump out of your seat. The scene where Sunny Leone meets Ragini (Kainaz Motivala) at a mental asylum is a loaded one. Director Bhushan Patel also lets you in on the horror slowly, bit by bit, scene by scene, which builds up the anticipation well and works to the film's advantage.

The film falters when the spookfest unravels full throttle. That's where something novel, something out-of-the-box would have hit a viewer like the bolt from hell. Alas what one is served is the usual tropes of the genre, the bloodletting, the creepy soundtrack, the macabre make-up that brings Ramsay brothers to mind.

Writers Suhani Kanwar and Tanweer Bookwala trot out a decent enough story with a climax that will find its takers and trashers. The music is another highlight, particularly 'Baby Doll' (watch it here) and 'Char Botal Vodka' (watch it here).

Higher on erotica than eeriness, Ragini MMS 2 is more than a horrex' film. Given that some of the scares fall flat and turn funny, one can as well call it horrexedy' (horror, sex, comedy). Be that as it may, the film is an entertaining watch for sure.

Watch it for Sunny Leone, if you must.

Ragini MMS 2 Heading For Solid First Day
Friday 21 March 2014 20.00 IST
Box Office India Trade Network

Ragini MMS 2 is heading for a solid first day as it has occupancies of around 35-40% at multiplexes and 60-65% at single screens. The film has a wide release, it is the widest release of 2014 after Jai Ho and Gunday.

The first day number will be good even allowing for the cricket match but the collections showed cracks at the certain multiplexes on day one itself possibly because the opening was better than the content or the affect of such a big match starts a bit earlier than the actual match.

Despite a drop in collections at some multiplexes and a big cricket match, the first day will come through very well and it will not be about growth for the film but how well can it hold over the weekend and thereafter.

Ragini MMS 2 Has Very Good First Day

Ragini MMS 2 had a very strong first day as it collected around 8.25 crore nett as per early estimates. The film had good to very good collections in all circuits with single screen dominated circuits outperforming .

Basically sex and horror works in many markets but underperforms in the North and here there was the chartbuster Baby Doll to counteract that and get North on board too. The film probably lost around 10% business due to the cricket match..

But it has to be noted that the best collections at many places were in the early shows so it remains to be seen where it goes in the next few days. The film is a success due to the first day and will pull through even if there is a big crash but it remains to be seen if it can sustain and emerge a major winner.

Ragini MMS 2 Opens Strongly Queen Continues Strong Run

Ragini MMS 2 had a good opening and multiplexes and was very good at single screens. Despite having a big cricket match for competition in the evening the film has recorded strong first day numbers. The business was good all over with Mysore being slightly less than what it should be.

Gang of Ghosts opened to a poor 5% response while Ankhon Dekhi and Lakshmi were total washouts and had shows cancelled at places despite a limited release.

Bewakoofiyaan had a poor first week of around 12.75 crore nett and eighth day has shown a huge drop.

Queen has done fantastic business at multiplexes as it grossed around 18.50 crore nett in its second which is similar to the first week. The two week business is around 37 crore nett and the film has steady at the start of its third week.
