Read more about Ayushmann Khurrana
Cast: Ayushmann Khurrana, Sonam Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor
Director: Nupur Asthana
Rating: Three stars
Life has come a full circle for Ayushmann Khurrana with Bewakoofiyaan which is like the celluloid version of Roadies. The obnoxious, expletives-spewing Raghu Ram is replaced by the hard taskmaster Rishi Kapoor. Ayushmann's task is to win his girlfriend's father's approval or else he will be VOTED OUT! In fact every time Rishi Kapoor called him a bloody duffer, I could almost hear Raghu scream - "Roadies banega tu, hain?? Saale, Roadies banega?"
The film raises an age-old question that has been baffling the little mickey out of young lovers since time immemorial - pyar chaiye ya paisa chaiye? Towards the end of the film, Sonam's character has to make a choice between a fat salaried job of the Vice-President (woah!) at a bank with a plush four-bedroom apartment at Dubai Marina (shooting pains in the left side of my body) or marry a waiter (dah)! Her decision left me a tad sad though! Teehee!
Bewakoofiyaan explores young relationships in the cyber city of Gurgaon pitting love against trying times of recession, garnishing it with careless credit card purchases, branded shoes and clothes, rock shows and finally passing off as a coming of age-we-are-toh-cool-young-people-with-modern-day-problems-film. LIKE TOTALLY!
The writer of the film Habib Faisal (who has given us the most adorable Do Dooni Chaar) derives inspiration from Meet the Parents/Fockers and pens down its desi version. Mohit Chadhha (Ayushmann-I-get-to-kiss-in-every-film-yayyy-Khurrana) is an executive at an airline company and is in love with Mayera Sehgal (Sonam-you-know-like-oh-my-gawwwd-like-really-like-let's-go-shopping-Kapoor). Her father is keen to get her married to a rich suitor so that she can fulfill all her middle-class wishes that she couldn't in her father's IAS salary. An interesting plot that loses both momentum and genuineness when VK Sehgal digs into Mohit's traffic fines, income-tax returns and all sorts of document verification so that he can reject him. He also believes that a good game of squash can lead to a happy marriage. BURP!
The first half of the film is fast-paced. It wastes no time in introducing the characters, building the plot and swiftly moves from one situation to the other.
Ayushmann Khurrana plays the urban guy well. He is cool, charismatic but needs to work on his dialogue delivery. Sometimes he tends to mumble through his lines.
Sonam Kapoor in between shopping designer sandals, clothes and attending oh my gawddd my favorite unmissable rock show' puts pressure on her poor boyfriend and successfully pulls of a rather uninspiring character of a demanding girlfriend. She looks fashionably gorgeous and I felt heartgasms as she slipped into a two piece bikini. (Recession hain na kya kare!?)
Rishi Kapoor plays VK Sehgal, the lust child of Osama and Uncle Scrooge. He is money-minded and scolds and scoffs Mohit at every opportune moment. He eventually comes around because the son-in-law to-be has made a cool' email id for him and taught him computers and some adrenaline rush video games. Wah damaad ho toh aisa. Beti ko khush rakhe na rakhe, mere saath video games toh khelega! Rishi Kapoor's first innings in the 80s can be well encapsulated in one line - It was so much fun changing those pastel shade sweaters every five minutes. In his second innings he shows his acting prowess portraying a myriad of interesting characters, be it Rauf Lala in Agneepath, Iqbal Seth in D Day or the effeminate Dean in Student of the Year. In Bewakoofiyaan he infuses life into a rather incoherent character.
Nupur Asthana after giving us Hip Hip Hurray and Mahi Ve on the small screen presents a breezy romcom in Bewakoofiyaanthat blends in both my favorite cities - Delhi and Dubai so beautifully on the big screen. Watch it if you are not mall hopping this weekend!
A 60-year-old chubby man sits squashed between his stylish, ambitious daughter and her "loser" boyfriend on a scooter as they ride off to land the old man a job. He chatters away nervously, as the two young lovers pep-talk him into giving his best shot.
This is probably one of the few charming moments in director Nupur Asthana's first take on love.
While her decision to put the spotlight on romance during recession might appear unusual, it's her cosmetic approach that ruins the ride. Moreover, Bollywood romances have always focused on lover's economic disparity, so much so that recession or not, money matters were cause of innumerable break-ups in the past.
She should've, instead, unfolded her story from where she pitches the "happily ever after" sign in Bewakoofiyaan'. Probably, it could've turned truly memorable, and possibly won our hearts.
In its current status, however, it appears like a lazy rip-off of Hollywood comedy Meet The Parents'.
While it's not a blatant copy, the rejections of an approved lover by his lover's terrorizing father are far too similar in sensibilities and texture to demand for a case of originality.
There are, however, glimpses of present day recession insecurities', wherein the unemployed are so shattered by their sudden loss of livelihood that they are strung-up about what jobs to take after. But, those hints of realism are far too few to merit appreciation.
Mohit is a MBA-topper, who rises up the ranks in an airline company, and hopes to win over his ladylove Mayera's Godzilla of a dad Sehgal. He, a retired government official, puts him on probation, and tests him on various levels to ensure he can make enough money to spoil his daughter.
Recession hits, and Mohit loses his job and any hopes of making an impression on his future dad-in-law with a depleting bank balance and no prospect of landing a good job.
What ensues is a comedy of errors, as Mohit is determined to floor Sehgel and get the green-signal to marry his daughter.
At a time of economic uncertainty, one would've hoped that Nupur had exercised more restraint on the editing desk, or indulged in a love story brimming with witty lines or delightful moments.
Even the Bollywood staple of a peppy soundtrack is absent. The tunes that do make it to the big screen, don't set our pulse racing.
Instead, Nupur banks heavily on her lead pair, who unfortunately lack the talent or the experience, or the "chemistry" to spin this love tale into something genuinely heartwarming.
Even their lines, penned by writer Leepakshi Ellawadi, fail to tickle our funny bone or make us go weak in the knees.
What we witness is Ayushmann and Sonam styled fashionably, and looking incredible in every frame, but wooden and lacking any real affection for each other.
And, that's a shame considering, Sonam's got a character that's (almost) her mirror image, constantly indulging in fashion labels that might technically be a tad cheaper than what she splurges on in real life. Even, Ayushmann is safely designed to fit into his Vicky Donor' mode, with just a tie and suit as additional accessories.
But, surfacing above all this superficiality is the affable Rishi Kapoor, who despite being given a character that borders on being turned into a caricature, moulds the ostensibly intolerable and unforgiving V K Sehgal into someone exceptionally affectionate.
He's ably assisted by a gentleman named Gurusharan, who insists on speaking humbly and helping his senior see rational.
Despite showing some promise, this romance fumbles and fizzles without much conviction, reducing it to a lazy DVD watch.
In fact, its sequel, if dealt with precision and heart, could make for something far more fascinating.
Look out for @ayushmannk's comic timing from the very first scene. Too good! #Bewakoofiyaan
What are your expectations from #Bewakoofiyaan?
Directed by Nupur Asthana, #Bewakoofiyaan stars Ayushmann Khurrana, Sonam Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor.
Stay tuned for the tweet review of #Bewakoofiyaan.
Hasee Toh Phasee, Highway, Shaadi Ke Side Effects, Total Siyaapa and Queen and its been a similar story every week with none taking a opening although the verdict on Queen is still to come as it is trending well and week two will decide its fate.
The biggest plus for Bewakoofian is that it has an opening week unlike last week's films though Queen could give it competition if it can take its weekdays trend into the second week as its a similar target audience. The problem for all these films is that they only have one week to do their business due to a similar release the next week and that too with a low or very starting point.
This is is what happened with Highway, Hasee Toh Phasee and even Queen, its just about where the film jumps and how much is the jump and can the film keep on gaining over the weekend.
It will be same story with Bewakoofiyan as it will see better collections at some point of the day and its fate will depend how it goes on from there. There will be a two way battle over the weekend as last week's release Queen has fantastic trending and will behave like a new release this week.

#Ayushmann Khurrana #Bewakoofiyan #Bewakoofiyan review #Bollywood #Entertainment #Movie review #MovieReview #Rishi Kapoor #Sonam Kapoor
When Bewakoofiyan starts off, it seems promising. It doesn't look or sound cliched. The actors look pretty, but credible. Everything seems to be in place for a fun film. Then the film deflates like an untied balloon.
The story disappears and is replaced by barely-funny sequences. The characters start going round in circles and when there's about half an hour left, everything happens in a tearing, illogical rush because it's time to wrap up.
It's not as though Bewakoofiyan doesn't have a plot. Mayera (Sonam Kapoor) and Mohit (Ayushmann Khurrana) are in love and all set to marry. The only obstacle in their path to married bliss is Mayera's protective and ogre-like, ex-IAS officer father (Rishi Kapoor).
Just as Mohit is gearing up to woo his prospective Daddyji, he is fired. Not just that, he's rejected at the interview stage when he starts looking for a new job. Can Mohit win over Mayera's father? Can their love survive his unemployment and her being the breadwinner of their family?

Bewakoofiyan throws in everything it can to hold on to our attention. Sonam Kapoor in a bikini, some lip locks, Rishi Kapoor in a comic role, a shirtless Ayushmann Khurrana flaunting his buff torso, a smart Sardarji, twists, a foreign location -- but none of this can redeem the film's lopsided script and bland acting performances.
It's no surprise that the heavy lifting in the acting department is done by Rishi Kapoor and Khurrana, while Sonam is one of the weakest links in Bewakoofiyan. Hers isn't a badly-written role, which is why it's a shame that she isn't able to do much with a heroine who is more successful than the hero. However, the real disappointment is how Mayera's career is treated (read: trampled upon) in a film directed by a woman director who is supposed to be good at connecting with young audiences.
Aside from Mayera, the writing in Bewakoofiyan fails both the story and the other characters. Mayera's father is a failed Machiavelli who is as menacing and cute as an overweight pug, making you wonder why Mohit and Mayera tiptoe around him. It seems like all they need to do is cuddle with him, give him some halwa and tell him to calm down. Khurrana is competent as Mohit, the boy who you can party with and take home to Daddy, but there's so little chemistry between him and Sonam that the relationship makes very little impression.
Despite their best efforts, neither Khurrana nor Rishi Kapoor are able to make their characters endearing. They're pleasant enough but not a single line or scene is memorable.
And therein lies the rub: with its bland characters and unimaginative storytelling, Bewakoofiyan is an utterly forgettable film. Neither Raghu Dixit's soundtrack nor Neha Parti Matiyani's flat cinematography lift the film or create moments that stay with you. As a result, the awkward details in the story aren't glossed over and instead become prominent.
For example, Mayera's father sits Mohit down and tells him that he can't approve of their relationship because Mohit files his IT returns late and has traffic violations on his 'record'. The same man wants his daughter to consider entrepreneurs who are running Rs 25-crore businesses as prospective husbands. Because we all know that entrepreneurs don't ever bend the rules or break the law, particularly those concerning IT returns.
At one point in Bewakoofiyan, Mohit realises he has Rs 653 in his bank because he's been spending money recklessly on holidays and while partying. Why doesn't he get SMS alerts like the rest of us, which tell us the balance amount after every debit or credit card transaction? You'd think that his girlfriend, who apparently works in Yes Bank, would have told him to sign up for that service.
Then there's the promotion that Mayera gets at work, which would require her to move to Abu Dhabi. Her boss tells her that someone else has been appointed. However, they're going next week and if Mayera can show up at the office before them, then she has a good chance at getting the job. Yes, just show up in a foreign branch of a bank and that'll ensure you get to work in a position that has already been filled. Makes perfect sense.
Through all this, Mayera is as fashionable as Sonam Kapoor is in real life, wearing Zara, Mango and Steve Madden shoes in way that's easy on the eye and adds nothing to either plot or character. Since Mayera's fashion-consciousness is a prominent point in the film, here's a parallel to sum up the film. Bewakoofiyan is like the strapless bra -- a good idea in theory but in practice, pointless and uncomfortable. Ladies in particular, go watch Queen instead.
The rom-com Bewakoofiyaan starring Sonam Kapoor and Ayushmaan Khurrana started off on a low note. The film showed poor occupancy at theaters for the morning shows.
Ayushmann Khurrana and Sonam Kapoor in a still from movie Bewakoofiyaan'
Not all films open with a bang and hence, Bewakoofiyaan too is expected to pick up in the day. There may be a rise in footfall for this Nupur Asthana film towards late evening. Even Queen which has now put up a good first week collection had a poor start and so has been the case with many of the recent releases.
The film's fresh pairing has created quite a buzz, however the movie has received mixed reviews from the critics. Now it is left to see what fate it has at the box office.
