Rating: Three stars

Life has come a full circle for Ayushmann Khurrana with Bewakoofiyaan which is like the celluloid version of Roadies. The obnoxious, expletives-spewing Raghu Ram is replaced by the hard taskmaster Rishi Kapoor. Ayushmann's task is to win his girlfriend's father's approval or else he will be VOTED OUT! In fact every time Rishi Kapoor called him a bloody duffer, I could almost hear Raghu scream - "Roadies banega tu, hain?? Saale, Roadies banega?"

The film raises an age-old question that has been baffling the little mickey out of young lovers since time immemorial - pyar chaiye ya paisa chaiye? Towards the end of the film, Sonam's character has to make a choice between a fat salaried job of the Vice-President (woah!) at a bank with a plush four-bedroom apartment at Dubai Marina (shooting pains in the left side of my body) or marry a waiter (dah)! Her decision left me a tad sad though! Teehee!

Bewakoofiyaan explores young relationships in the cyber city of Gurgaon pitting love against trying times of recession, garnishing it with careless credit card purchases, branded shoes and clothes, rock shows and finally passing off as a coming of age-we-are-toh-cool-young-people-with-modern-day-problems-film. LIKE TOTALLY!

The writer of the film Habib Faisal (who has given us the most adorable Do Dooni Chaar) derives inspiration from Meet the Parents/Fockers and pens down its desi version. Mohit Chadhha (Ayushmann-I-get-to-kiss-in-every-film-yayyy-Khurrana) is an executive at an airline company and is in love with Mayera Sehgal (Sonam-you-know-like-oh-my-gawwwd-like-really-like-let's-go-shopping-Kapoor). Her father is keen to get her married to a rich suitor so that she can fulfill all her middle-class wishes that she couldn't in her father's IAS salary. An interesting plot that loses both momentum and genuineness when VK Sehgal digs into Mohit's traffic fines, income-tax returns and all sorts of document verification so that he can reject him. He also believes that a good game of squash can lead to a happy marriage. BURP!

The first half of the film is fast-paced. It wastes no time in introducing the characters, building the plot and swiftly moves from one situation to the other.

Ayushmann Khurrana plays the urban guy well. He is cool, charismatic but needs to work on his dialogue delivery. Sometimes he tends to mumble through his lines.

Sonam Kapoor in between shopping designer sandals, clothes and attending oh my gawddd my favorite unmissable rock show' puts pressure on her poor boyfriend and successfully pulls of a rather uninspiring character of a demanding girlfriend. She looks fashionably gorgeous and I felt heartgasms as she slipped into a two piece bikini. (Recession hain na kya kare!?)

Rishi Kapoor plays VK Sehgal, the lust child of Osama and Uncle Scrooge. He is money-minded and scolds and scoffs Mohit at every opportune moment. He eventually comes around because the son-in-law to-be has made a cool' email id for him and taught him computers and some adrenaline rush video games. Wah damaad ho toh aisa. Beti ko khush rakhe na rakhe, mere saath video games toh khelega! Rishi Kapoor's first innings in the 80s can be well encapsulated in one line - It was so much fun changing those pastel shade sweaters every five minutes. In his second innings he shows his acting prowess portraying a myriad of interesting characters, be it Rauf Lala in Agneepath, Iqbal Seth in D Day or the effeminate Dean in Student of the Year. In Bewakoofiyaan he infuses life into a rather incoherent character.

Nupur Asthana after giving us Hip Hip Hurray and Mahi Ve on the small screen presents a breezy romcom in Bewakoofiyaan that blends in both my favorite cities - Delhi and Dubai so beautifully on the big screen. Watch it if you are not mall hopping this weekend!

Movie review: Sonam, Ayushmann's Bewakoofiyan has a youth connect
Parmita Uniyal, Hindustantimes.com New Delhi, March 14, 2014

Director Nupur Asthana's Bewakoofiyan does not have the buzz advantage that a YRF movie normally enjoys. The only talking point was Sonam Kapoor's bikini scene and probably a few catchy songs. While the length of the movie is less than two hours, it could have been even crisper. Cliches abound in this film but it might connect with the youth, who are likely to find the characters relatable.

Introducing the characters
Meet Myra (Sonam Kapoor), a true-blue fashionista (like her real-life image) who's madly in love with our loser boy Ayushmann Khurrana who gets sacked from the marketing job of an airline company.

Meet Mohit Chadda (Ayushmann Khurrana), a high-headed sales and marketing executive... oops senior executive who after losing his job divides his day into three parts - partying with his girlfriend, getting job offers for his father-in-law 'Osama' (he calls him that) and giving job interviews.

Meet VK Sehgal (Rishi Kapoor), a retired IAS officer, who loses his cool at the drop of a hat but cooks delicious chicken biryani and suji halwa for his darling daughter Myra.

What we liked

1 Sonam Kapoor, the intelligent fashionista: Sonam Kapoor, the intelligent fashionista: Her character is not only financially stronger than her lover's, but also emotionally. While Ayushmann spoils his employment chances by his high-handed attitude, she patiently makes a new list of jobs everyday for him. Even after her break-up, she grabs an almost lost opportunity of a lucrative Dubai job transfer.

Sonam Kapoor gets into the skin of her character very well. Her performances are more in control now, compared to her previous films such as Aisha and Player.

2 Rishi Kapoor, the sanki father: A more dramatic version of Do Dooni Chaar's father, Rishi inadvertently makes you laugh with his 'uncool' attitude. He has some quirks that make him all the more interesting.

The seasoned actor is a delight to watch and makes the film worthwhile.

3 Message for youth: Kal ki hum abhi soche kyun, jeene ko yeh pal kaafi hai. Jo din hai humne dekha nahi, uspe hum kyun bharosa karein. The song Gulcharrey aptly sums up the theme of the film, which also seems to be the philosophy of today's youth. But is life all about jebon mein bhare gulcharrey? That's something the youth has to ponder on.

What we did not

1 Clichd storyline and predictable end: Boy and girl are in love. They want to get married. Girl's father objects and asks the guy to prove himself. Maine Pyaar Kiya, Mr and Mrs Khiladi, Dulhe Raja... the list is endless. Also how many times a guy will stop his love interest from leaving the country - Chalte Chalte, Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai, Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na... movie lovers please fill in the blanks.

2 Where's the emotional depth? They love each other so deeply, but break up on a silly note. Sonam argues about not being able to buy more than one fresh pair of shoes every month. Ayushmann gets worked up for no reason, and asks her to get out of the car. And they break up.

The focus is more on partying and brand-flaunting than the lead pair's emotional equation, which is a turn off as the movie is a love story.

3Lacks soul: The film is more like a photo album, where interesting moments are woven together. It lacks a cohesive script which can convince you about the lead pair's decisions. You laugh along with the characters, but don't know why. You also get teary-eyed, but later feel like a fool. There's something phony that constantly reminds you that nothing is for real. And when the lights go off, you don't take the characters home?

Bewakoofiyan Has A Poor Start

Bewakoofiyan opened to poor collections all over but morning collections have become irrelevant for these type of films as the morning figures suggest ridiculously low first day's but eventually there is some traction at some point of the day and the first day comes out better than what is expected in the morning.

This is is what happened with Highway, Hasee Toh Phasee and even Queen, its just about where the film jumps and how much is the jump and can the film keep on gaining over the weekend.

It will be same story with Bewakoofiyan as it will see better collections at some point of the day and its fate will depend how it goes on from there. There will be a two way battle over the weekend as last week's release Queen has fantastic trending and will behave like a new release this week.

The other release W - Women Of Today opened to empty houses.

Flop queen Sonam delivers again. No epic performance from Dhanush or Farhan this time for her to bask in their success. Already predicted her bikini scene wont have any impact. You need to market films on proper content if it has any.
