Radar's can't detect a plane when it is above sea. These are few lines from an article

Once an aircraft is more than 240km (150 miles) out to sea, radar coverage usually ends and air crew keep in touch with air traffic control and other aircraft using high-frequency radio.

MH-370's communication system was deliberately switched off & transponders were off too to avoid detection.

@SG - If the current locations are to be considered i.e. Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, there is a decent land and it would require plane flying at some decent altitude. Skipping around India/Pakistan/China like that is very weird. Either the main countries were aware of the breech and let it happen in hopes of negotiation or the plane had some serious leverage.
@Search around Andaman Island is more or less a military exercise to very the border security.

If what is being said right now , the fact that this plane managed to flow across the very interiors of India is pretty crazy.

Just read this on reddit:

Mainland Chinese media reports: a female relative of one of the passengers discovered on the 14th that she had a missed call notification on her phone from her father who was on board the missing flight. She immediately called back 3-4 times only to hear the 'the number you're calling is switched off' message.

Experts in the telecom industry state that there are 3 possibilities: 1. The call was actually made by the passenger 2) It was a call from a third party who used software to make the call using that number 3) the telecom operator made the call due to a backend malfunction but this is highly unlikely.

360 mobile security (movike security software company) exports also say that anyone who wishes to clarify whether the call was placed should contact the telecom provider to obtain a phone call record. If the call shows on record it is likely that the call was genuine, however it does not fully preclude the possibility of a disguised or hijacked number being used to place the call.

UPDATE: PRESS CONFERENCE 1:30 PM MYT/5:30 AM UTC

  • The Prime Minister is to make a statement about MH 370. NO QUESTIONS OR INQUIRIES WILL BE TAKEN. Press is free to submit questions or inquiries which will be responded to at the 5:30 PM MYT press conference which will include technical details. They are silencing protests from the audience.
  • Prime Minister is running late reportedly because he is meeting with the families of the passengers.
  • Prime Minister has arrived.
  • Malaysian authorities have been instructed to share information openly with all allies
  • 14 countries, 43 ships, 53 aircraft involved. Grateful to all governments.
  • Information with experienced authorities has been shared in real time. Working nonstop, putting national security 2nd to find the missing plane.
  • Search has been over land, South China Sea, Andaman Sea, Straits of Malacca, Indian Ocean. Been following credible leads.
  • Only corroborated information is being released.
  • First phase: near MH 370's last known position (S China Sea). Then it was brought to attention that based on primary radar an unidentified aircraft made a turn back. The a/c continued to an area north of the Straits of Malacca. Area of search was expanded to Straits of Malacca and Andaman Sea.
  • Investigators include FAA, NTSB, AAIB, Malaysian authorities, and Minister of Transport.
  • Based on new satellite communication, it is known with a high degree of certainty that, the aircraft communications addressing and reporting system (ACARS) was disabled just before the aircraft reached the east coast of the Malaysian peninsula. Afterwards, near the border between Malaysia and Vietnamese ATC, the aircraft transponder was switched off. Primary data showed that an aircraft that was believed, but not confirmed, to be MH 370, did indeed turn back. It then flew in a westerly direction over Peninsula Malaysia, before turning northwest. Up until it left military primary radar coverage, the movements are consistent with deliberate action by someone on the aircraft. Today, based on raw satellite data which was obtained from the satellite date service provider, it is CONFIRMED that the aircraft shown in primary radar data WAS MH 370. FAA, NTSB, AAIB, Malaysian authorities, concur.
  • Unable to confirm precise location of the plane when it last made contact with satellites. However, based on new data, the aviation authorities of Malaysia, and the international counterparts, the last communication of MH 370 was in 1 of 2 possible corridors: Northern (border of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan to Northern Thailand) or Southern (from Indonesia to southern Indian Ocean).
  • Malaysian authorities refocusing investigations on crew and passengers onboard. All possibilities are still being researched. "Despite media reports that the plane was hijacked, I wish to be very clear - we are still investigating all possibilities as to what caused MH370 to deviate from this original flight path."
  • Ending operation in South China Sea and refocusing assets.

Security at airports in some parts of Asia leaves a lot to be desired, frankly. I have been living in South-east Asia for a decade now and have travelled to almost every country there.

Places like Cambodia, Vietnam, Thaliand, Phillipines and Malaysia are not very particular about their immigration / security procedures, as compared to places like Singapore and Hongkong, who are very rigid and thorough.
Luggage not being screened is a horrifying notion, but not completely implausible!
But this case cannot have anything to do with the Cargo...if there was a bomb on board, the flight would not be cruising half the world for 7.5 hours.
Now that hijack has been confirmed, one wonders who did it? No one except a qualified and experienced pilot can fly a T3 the way MH370 was flown for so long...no amount of practice on a SIM can transfer those skills into flying an actual, real plane!
Its the equivalent of saying that one can go and play a match at Wimbledon against a Grand Slam winner after practicing virtual Tennis on Wii or X-box!

Poppy, you can just force the pilot to continue to fly the aircraft at force, cant you? Whoever is responsible didn't necessarily have to fly the craft himself/herself.

@Poppy - the cargo can be referred to " what" or "who" was being transported. there were lithium batteries on this plane. Intellectual piracy can be a cause for why no demand was made.
Agree, who ever carried out this was well aware with the Boeing 777 and had some support. it doesn't seem like one man thing. 7.5 hrs of wayward flying seems almost like a defiance.

@Kazakhstan is massive , think of all the unused air strips. it can be around the area, so many other potential places. If it managed to be on air for 7.5 hrs , the possibilities are endless.

True! Which brings one to wonder how did that person get inside the cockpit?
And what did he carry with him that frightened or supressed the pilots to comply with his wishes?
