In 50's,60's or 70's(to an extent) many movies had stories based on classic books(Sharat Chandra's etc),they had strong characters both male and female that changed. Have you seen Guru Dutt's Sahib,Biwi aur Gulam...look at Meena Kumari in it or Nutan in Bandini...powerful roles they were!

One more thing has changed which is that now there is too much focus on actresses looks and body... ... they have to look sexy,glamorous. Only VidyaBalan is the one who defies such stereotype!
