Every other day there is a topic in the forum about how Kareena or Vidya's career is over after marriage and 30+ age and whether they will bounce back. And most of the times audience is blamed for being unsupportive & unwelcoming( for actresses like Aishwarya,Karishma etc). But do many ppl know here that yesteryear actresses Nutan,Sharmila Tagore,Moushumi Chatterjee have given their best after marriage and even after kids! General public didn't reject them. So why it is so different nowadays? I did some research when I my mom told me about Nutan,Sharmila etc. This is what I found-

Nutan
Nutan got married in 1959 to Rajneesh Behl still she continued to play leading roles for a long time.
Nutan continued playing leading roles through the 1960s until the late 1970s and went on win the award on four other occasions for her roles in Sujata (1959), Bandini(1963), Milan (1967) and Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki (1978). Some of her other films of this period include Sone Ki Chidiya (1958), Anari (1959), Chhalia (1960), Tere Ghar Ke Saamne(1963), Saraswatichandra (1968), Anuraag (1972) and Saudagar (1973).

Moushmi Chatterjee had started her career only after marriage-

She was introduced to movies in 1967, with the Bengali movie "Balika Badhu". She started to act in movies after her marriage, which was quite unique for females at that time.Moushumi Chatterjee made her film debut in 1972 with the hit film "Anuraag" and immediately secured her place in Bollywood.

She was on the top of her career in the 70's and early 80's, when she used to star opposite heroes as Amitabh Bachchan, Jitendra, Dharmendra etc.In her peak years, she starred opposite leading stars like Vinod Khanna in "Kachche Dhaage" and Amitabh in "Roti,Kapada Aur Makaan", "Benaam" and "Manzil".

She received Filmfare nominations as Best Actress for "Anuraag" (1972) where she played a blind girl, and as Best Supporting Actress for "Roti Kapda Aur Makaan" (1974), where she played a rape survivor.

In the late 80's and 90's, eschewing glamorous parts for good scripts.

Sharmila Tagore-

Sharmila Tagore won national award for her role in Mausam which was after marriage.

Sharmila began her career as an actress in Satyajit Ray's 1959 Bengali film Apur Sansar .

Sharmila was seen with Rajesh Khanna for movies such as Aradhana (1969) and Amar Prem (1972), Daag (1973), Maalik (1972) and Safar (1970). She starred in Gulzar's 1975 film, Mausam and won the National Film Award for Best Actress.

Her latest release is a Marathi film Samaantar by Amol Palekar. Her earlier releases were Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Eklavya: The Royal Guard, which brought together real life mother and son, Sharmila Tagore and Saif Ali Khan.
Sharmila married Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, Nawab of Pataudi, in a Nikah ceremony held on 27 December 1969.

Agree it's not the audience, it's the producers who don't give married actresses as many chances as they give to unmarried actress, but hopefully that would change. I hope vidya and Kareena would continue to shine.
And I feel aish come back would be beneficial for the whole industry,

Wish all the leading ladies all the best, I hope they will be able to bring a change

In those times look at the powerful roles Nutan and Sharmila have done after their marriage... we don't have such roles today. If there are, they are very few almost negligible.

Aishwarya's career went just fine after she got married. She got married in the middle of Jodhaa Akbar and she continued to get big movies afterwards.
It was HER decision to take time off after she had a baby.

Kareenas failure is entirely her own fault. She got offered Ranjhana and she turned it down and walked out of RL just because it had no big star. She knows she has no BO pull so she just signs big banner films and hams her way through movies. The last memorable performance was Talaash! Like she's so careless about scripts..Vidya and PC, DP are all racing ahead and getting better while she's still picking flossy roles that she can sleep through. BUT now I feel she has truly woken up. She is now smelling the coffee and realising no ones gonna wait around for her.. I predict that she will be back with a bang in 2015!

I've always felt that Aish/Kareena have the upper hand over Vidya because they can fit perfectly in glamorous roles, which is Vidyas weakness. Where as Vidya has the upper hand because she's a consistently good actress who ACTUALLY has some box office pull unlike the other two.

Overall I really like them all and I just hope that they all continue to act, because if they give up then we have NO hope left for married actresses in Bollywood!

One question arises- Has the emergence of the superstars especially male superstars Rajesh Khannna,Amitabh Bachhan and the three Khans plus Akshay Kumar etc has a role to play in this or it's the lack of good stories which is a contributing factor?

@SG, to answer your last question...yup, the emergence of the 'supestar' era did erode the significance of women from hindi cinema (I say hindi, because women kept playing an important role in some parts of regional cinema...notably Malayalam and Bengali films, not surprising, because both cultures and states have always given equal if not more importance to women as a rule!).
The reason of women falling behind in hindi cinema; I am guessing one of the reasons could be that the majority of movie-goers in our country are men and hence automatically they graviate towards male-oriented films...or atleast films, which don't have an overtly female-centric theme.
Lately, there has been a resurgence of powerful female characters in hindi cinema and these films have done well commercially too...proving that a good story will sell, no matter who stars in it! English Vinglish, Kahaani, TDP and lately Highway have all had strong female-centric themes and they have not just garnered critical appreciation, but have raked in money at the BO too!

That's a good question..I think it's a combination of factors. In the previous generations, the women had good roles and actually used their talents. It was a simpler time, where everyone worked together as a team in creating the movie..it's not like women had it totally easy, no no no..but they had a lot of screen space and freedom to explore as an actress without the fear of having the media hound them and count all their hits and flops, each and every movie. Bollywood NOW has become a huge industry! And it's a BUSINESS at the end of the day. The reason why the male dominated idea works is because the audience PAYS to go see it, quite simple. However now that the audience is more open to movies like Barfi, EV, Kahaani...the demand of women centric films rises! Why? They proved to be successful at the Box Office. It's all about making money after all. We just need Bollywood producers to make more brilliant female oriented scripts and we also need our bollywood actresses to be more daring and sign them!

So its multiple things..the evolving of filmmakers, the actresses themselves, and most of all..the AUDIENCE.

What's your opinion on it??
