What I have observed is AmitabhB's films at the start of his career were different and quite good Saudagar,Anand,Chupke Chupke etc but then came a time when oppressed hero,angry young man era took over,actresses were usually restricted to play hero's love interest,damsel in distress ...this thing continued for a long time. Somewhere after this very few women oriented good films were seen. In 50's,60's or 70's(to an extent) many movies had stories based on classic books(Sharat Chandra's etc),they had strong characters both male and female that changed. Have you seen Guru Dutt's Sahib,Biwi aur Gulam...look at Meena Kumari in it or Nutan in Bandini...powerful roles they were!
