^^The Telegraph gave good rating..that's a rare. They always bash every film..it means HTP is good 😃
They praised SidM too 🥳

The first of KJo's three students of 2012 to have a release this year, Sidharth does admirably well. He uses his gawkiness to his advantage and makes Nikhil relatable and real. Together with Parineeti, he makes an oddball pairing which may not be sizzling but extremely likeable.

Movie Review: 'Hasee Toh Phasee'. It seems to have everything going for it. The smart, varying sensibilities of co-producers Karan Johar and Anurag Kashyap, a likeable leading man, and a crackerjack heroine. What it doesn't have is a coherent story.

Movie Review: Hasee Toh Phasee

Cast: Parineeti Chopra, Sidharth Malhotra, Adah Sharma, Manoj Joshi, Sharat Saxena, Neena Kulkarni

Director : Vinil Mathew

Batty girl meets sweet fellow. Is it cute? Yes, that first mulaqaat' is. And then? Then Hasee Toh Phasee' wanders about figuring out whether it wants to be a contemporary rom com, or a Gujju soap, or a 60s melodrama, or all of the above. This confusion confounds the film, fronted by the most talented female lead working in Bollywood right now, and makes her much less fun than she can be. And that holds true for the film, too.

It is most exasperating, because Hasee Toh Phasee' seems to have everything going for it. The smart, varying sensibilities of co-producers Karan Johar and Anurag Kashyap, a likeable leading man, and a crackerjack heroine. What it doesn't have is a coherent story, and that's why none of the refreshing bits add up.

Meeta (Parineeti Chopra) is the kind of girl who uses her mind to invent things. Gasp. Mind, in a Bollywood heroine? But before we can break into a bhangra', or break out the bubbly, we are pulled up short. Lest Meeta is condemned to be one of those intelligent 'behenjis', she is saddled with a jhalli' other self, and made to do all kinds of strange things for no good reason.

That, right there, is the problem. You want Meeta to be sharp and bright and talk about plastic and polymers and renewable energy, more power to you. Why the cop out? People can be bright and weird at the same time, but then you have to make it the right kind of weird. Meeta's weirdness comes down to making faces, sticking her tongue sideways, talking fast in sing-song : basically acting hard at acting weird. She's given a reason to be like that, but I didn't buy it. Nor her over-the-top act, which overshadows her natural easy self.
So many of the plot devices feel so contrived and cobbled together that you lose sight of the best things about the film. Some absolutely delightful sequences get lost. I would count Sidharth Malhotra's floppy- haired loser-trying-to-find-himself as one of the pluses of this film, even if he doesn't come across too different with two girls he oscillates between : Cracked Meeta and Hardheaded Practical Karishma ( Adah) . His Nikhil is nice because he doesn't try too hard. I would also say, that despite her missteps here, that there really is no one quite like Parineeti Chopra in Bollywood : she is a mainstream actress bringing in freshness to jaded mainstream products.

The loose, random plotting, and motivation, lets them down. Some solid supporting acts- Manoj Joshi , as the father of the bride, a curly-haired comic as the relative of the groom"go waste. There's also the crucial thing about spark : why are our love stories so chary about showing throbbing passion? In a stand-out scene, which has Meeta and Nikhil high in the sky in a picture-perfect Valentine Day Hallmark card-type setting, we see the start of something. And then there is a thud, and the film takes them into an entirely different Hum Aapke Hain Kaun' alley with enraged uncles who have no compunction about slapping young girls across the face. And sobbing mothers yelling about ghar ki izzat'. Did I also hear a door ho jaao meri nazaron se'? Even if I didn't, it would have fit right in with the scene. What is this, a dated four-hanky tear-jerker?

When, dear Bollywood, when will we get a real, rousing rom com?

Atleast the actors were praised😛

'Hasee Toh Phasee' review: Parineeti steals the show!

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, 'Hasee to phasee' is ideal for young couples out to celebrate romance. It's the typical feel good rom-com that brings together the handsome Sidharth Malhotra and the effervescent Parineeti Chopra.

'Hasee...' traces the journey of Nikhil (Sidharth) and Meeta (Parineeti), who meet at Nikhil's wedding after a fleeting conversation seven years ago. Both the actors have delivered fabulous performances. Parineeti owns the movie as a brilliant-yet-quirky scientist who has some emotional disorders. Sidharth too plays his role of a young entrepreneur well.

It is refreshing movie with no big frills and each of the characters are flawed and make you relate to them quite easily. The hero is not perfect - he has a financial problem, and trying to find his feet in the business world, and he is not the perfect son that you expect from Karan Johar's leading man. The lead is innocent, a drug addict, yet not in a depressing sort of a way. Newcomer Adah Sharma carries herself in the most elegant fashion throughout the movie in a supporting role. Sharat Saxena, Neena Kulkarni and Manoj Joshi, in the roles of the parents of Nikhil and Meeta, play their part perfectly.

Director Vinil Mathew keeps the humour clean and almost all the moments of laughter are stolen by Parineeti. She probably has the best comic timing among the new crop of actresses. She reminds you a bit of Preity Zinta in 'Dil Se'. She looks innocent and some sweet and intelligent dialogues instantly make you take to her. Mathew also makes sure that the movie is not overly dramatic; it just tugs gently at your heart strings.

It does get a tad slow just before the interval. But the story captures the moments nicely enough without over-explaining or making the leads clingy and too mushy. Mathew keeps the modern relationship and the expectations of the youth in mind.

The dialogues, written by Mathew and Anurag Kashyap, are intelligent and often make you smile. There are various touching moments in the movie, like the time when Meeta is adamant to reconnect with her father. Despite the funny way Nikhil goes about trying to make that happen, Parineeti's expressions will make you feel emotional. The plot, however, needed some more work. It lacks an even pace and the movie could have easily been cut short by at least half an hour.

The music is nice, especially the song 'Zehanaseeb', which is really romantic. 'Shake it like Shammi' is a great dance number dedicated to Shammi Kapoor. The background score also fits the mood of the movie.

Watch:

Don't go for the movie if you are expecting a candy-floss romance. The movie is quirky and breaks some stereotypes. Parineeti's performance is adorable and definitely a great plus. Even though it is just a one-time watch, it will definitely make a great Valentine's date. Take your girlfriend or spouse out for this movie and cosy up with a tub of pop corn for a not-so-typical romance.

Main Story

Hasee toh Phasee

Banner: Dharma Productions, Phantom Films
Producers: Karan Johar, Anurag Kashyap, Vikas Bahl, Vikramaditya Motwane, Madhu Mantena
Director: Vinil Mathew
Cast: Sidharth Malhotra, Parineeti Chopra, Adah Sharma, Sharat Saxena, Manoj Joshi, Neena Kulkarni, Sameer Khakhar, Anil Mange
Music: Vishal-Shekhar

In Hasee Toh Phasee, Vinil Mathew has taken a simple story and turned it into a touching romantic comedy that's very real. That's typical of Mathew's work. Even as an ad filmmaker, his commercials were simple yet striking and usually featured two protagonists vibing with each other. So, kudos to Mathew as a debutant film director.

The film is no masterpiece but it has sufficient substance to make it thoroughly enjoyable. A huge plus is the way the supporting cast has been presented in the film. They look very real and make the film that much more relatable. In fact, they are so real, you wonder if you've met them somewhere! Sure, the movie has its ups and downs but if one scene is below par, it is followed by one that is brilliantly written and executed.

The story per se is routine. Boy meets girl, and years later, they meet again but under different circumstances. The way they meet for a few minutes and then again, years later, reminds you of Karan Johar's Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna featuring Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukerji.

The film is about Nikhil (Sidharth Malhotra) and Meeta (Parineeti Chopra). Nikhil doesn't want to follow family tradition and becomes a cop and the same can be said about Meeta, who has her own dreams. They have a chance meeting and then forget about each other.

Nikhil falls in love with Karishma (Adah Sharma) unbeknownst that she's Meeta's sister. Seven years later, Nikhil meets Meeta, a few days before his is to marry Karishma. How this changes things for the three protagonists - Nikhil, Meeta and Karishma - forms the crux of the film.

Like we said, the story itself may not sound interesting and is, in fact, very predictable. But it is Mathew's treatment of the film that makes it worth watching. He may not have introduced a new style of direction; he may not have introduced new-age cinema; but there's something in the way the film has been written and executed that makes it very endearing.

The character sketches and actors who have essayed these roles adds a lot of substance to the film. However, the film loses its grip before the interval but it soon picks up. Post-interval, the pace slows with a series of songs, and although the climax has been done to death, it is still very watchable.

The film has many memorable scenes, especially the bond between father (Mohan Joshi) and daughter (Parineeti Chopra). The scene when Joshi sees his daughter after many years is very touching. Among the hilarious scenes is the one where the entire family led by Parineeti Chopra goes shopping; the exchange between Sidharth Malhotra and Tinu Anand; the one between Siddharth and Parineeti Chopra; the scene where Parineeti Chopra is accused of stealing a necklace; and last but not the least, Anil Mange's singing.

Despite a smattering of hiccups, Vinil Mathew is definitely a welcome addition to the pool of talented directors we have. Cinematography is first class. Vishal-Shekhar may not have come up with their best this time but the music does enhance the experience of watching this film.

Performance-wise, this is only Sidharth Malhotra's second film but he's mind-blowing. You tend to wonder how he would stack up against Parineeti Chopra but one-film-old Malhotra is full of confidence. He is outstanding in the film.

Parineeti Chopra has proved, time and again, that she is multi-talented and this performance confirms the fact that she is among the few talented actresses we have. Adah Sharma is very good. Manoj Joshi is superb. Sharat Saxena is good and the same can be said of Sameer Khakhar and Neena Kulkarni. As for Anil Mange, his performance can be accounted among the USPs of this film. This film will possibly change his career.

Verdict: Despite a few bumps along the way, Hasee Toh Phasee has enough substance to entertain

Hasee Toh Phasee grossed around 3.75-4 crore nett on its first day. The collections were okay in Mumbai, Delhi/UP, East Punjab and Mysore due to the contribution of metros

The collections elsewhere remained very low with poor contributions from the mass markets. Mumbai grossed around 1.30 crore nett, Delhi/UP around 90 lakhs nett with East Punjab was 42 lakhs and Mysore should come in at 25 lakhs plus.

The contribution from the above circuits alone is 75% as places like Rajasthan, Nizam, CI etc had low collections. The film will show growth on Saturday but probably not the sort of growth that it needs to come out with a good weekend.
