Bullet Raja: Movie Review Posted by: Nabanita Published: Friday, November 29, 2013, 7:02 [IST]

After winning acclodes for Gangs Of Wasseypur, filmmaker Tigmanshu Dhulia is back with his hi-octane drama flick Bullet Raja, that features Saif Ali Khan and Sonakshi Sinha in the leads. Bullet Raja is a gangster-thriller, set against the backdrop of Uttar Pradesh-based mafia while dealing with the political and industrial powers of the state. Like most of Dhulia's earlier films, Bullet Raja too is raw, unrefined, rustic and unique in it's own way. Story: The story of Bullet Raja revolves around Raja Mishra, a commoner, who gets transformed into Bullett Raja - a notorious, care a damn attitude gangster. A faithful friend and a loyal lover, living life on his own terms, setting his own rules, commanding respect and fearing no one, Bullett Raja in his true inimitable style takes on the system that creates people like him in a compelling struggle for power and ambition. Mishra's character commands respect, but at the same time he makes sure he respects women. Although he is a gangster where he finds glory with guns, the movie also has for us some instances of romance between Saif and Sonakshi Sinha, who plays Mishra's love interest in the flick. This gangster has his lady love to whom he is very loyal.

Performances So Far: As for Saif Ali Khan, you'll get to see a bit of Langda Tyagi in Bullet Raja. Saif's looks, his mannerisms, his body language, his overall behavioral pattern takes you by complete surprise in Bullet Raja. From a sophisticated charmer to a rustic gunda, Saif makes the audience believe him. Sonakshi Sinha looks beautiful, but she's again repetative. Sinha doesn't get to do much in the movie, while Vidyua Jamwal on the other hand, is just 'wow'.

Verdict So Far: The biggest plus point of Bullet Raja is that the audience gets to see a fresh new pair- Saif and Sonakshi and their amazing chemistry. Bullet Raja is a treat to the action lovers, and yes, Saif rocks in his raw avatar.

BULLETT RAJA

1 star

Dum Dum Bullet

Mini Review:

This color-by-numbers North Indian Goondas Are Cool movie is as teeth-gratingly predictable as the South Cool Cop remakes every Bollywood hero has made. Tigmanshu Dhulia misfires. Audience dies of boredom.

Main Review:

Take a little notebook and let's make a checklist. It's a Tigmanshu Dhulia film, so it will be set in Gawalier, ya phir Benaras, Kanpur ya phir Nukhlow (yes, we're phonetically original like that).

Angreji will be spoken, and while the item number will be phor locals who spik englis with paan laced jubaan, the great director will surprise you with one goonda character who speaks English like he just had tea at 10 Downing Street. (Your mind's eye can almost see members of the durbaar at the Director's den rubbing their hands in glee for having 'ideated' such a character.)

Speaking of item numbers, please someone, hammer that last nail in the coffin of an actor who was considered to be spunky and brilliant when she showed up in Dev D and who is now reduced to pukeworthy gyrations in tacky costumes to lyrics like, Don't touch my bawwdy, o mor-e saiyyan'. Alas, you want to say, no one would want to touch it. Not even with a barge pole.

So we've ticked language, location and item number. Now for the cast. Every person you saw in Tigmanshu Dhulia's earlier films has been given a part here. Jimmy Shergill, Vipin Sharma et al. Not a single surprise there. But yes, you'll wonder as a fellow critic (must be a fan of Sonakshi Sinha) did. How can she not carry a plate of laddoos for the hero? It made me come back from the movie and check her other movies. He's right. She does appear with a plate of laddoos in her other films. So half a star for doing something unexpected there.

But yes, why is Sonakshi Sinha accepting these vapid roles? Where she sings a romantic song in a garden to the hero and he keeps visualising his male friend smiling lovingly back at him? When you see the silliness of singing forgettable songs with yellow taxis of Kolkata (so cool in Kahani), you miss the tulip fields and chiffon sarees in Switzerland type songs. That romantic track was as pointless as the visit to Mumbai so they could tick-mark a disco song in the movie.

And apologies to the audience who might want to see wholesome on the screen. But it would be nice if the heroine was a tad slimmer. I mean, slim enough to fit into the cupboard, perhaps? And why is the audience expected to laugh at a hero who is afraid of flying when he is with the heroine but when flying alone, he has no such fears to be overcome?

So the predictability check list is growing. Add to that, the hairless cleavage of the hero. Here I must give half a star to the unpredictable bronzer the make up person has used on that cleavage. Saif Ali Khan's cleavage was sometimes Fair and Lovely and at other times Florida Tanning-Bed Bronze. And with Jimmy Shergill, their joint hair lengths kept fluctuating so much it reminded me of Salman Khan's hair in Veer.

Thankfully the bullets from goonda guns behave as predictably as if they were taught by Stormtroopers in Star Wars. You are subjected to the sound and fury of a blazing gun battle for fifteen minutes, and then the baddie says, Hamare chaar aadmi mar gaye.' Practically no one dies. Of course, there is a sleazy Chunkey Pandey who betrays the uncle. Could you get any more predictable than that?

And then the hero needs some same ole revenge thing. The audience would have been happier had the director killed the heroine instead of the hero's love interest. The bromance has so much more chemistry, so many more possibilities...

But no one's thinking. They just want the audience to whistle and clap (like the stupid construction workers who are all in the way of bullets, but not one gets killed) when the hero's satin shirts never get singed even when he stuffs his gun into the front of his pants. Has no one ever fired a gun ever? Gun barrels get really hot to touch when they are fired as much as they are shown to do in these movies. You've seen smoke come out of barrels, yes? It's a fact. Each time the hero pumps bullets into a hundred baddies, and then shoves his gun into the waistband, I cringe...

But most cringeworthy is the end of the film, where the director of a fine movie like Paan Singh Tomar begins to explain again and again who lives and who dies.

'He rendered the audience stupid with the whole whole movie', my head says to my disenchanted heart, 'that's why he needs to explain the twist naa...'

I can't even kill myself with those guns that have been stuffed in those creepy crotches, I shudder as I emerge from the movie. And sigh as I realise that even if I did wipe the gun with a sanitizer, the dum dum bullets would not let me die. What tedium this has been...

Movie Review: Bullett Raja is a Saif's show

New Delhi : True to the expectation Bullett Raja will pass all the benchmarks you have set in your mind. The movie entertains you, gives a reason to laugh and power pack acting of Saif Ali Khan will leave you amazed.

  • Tigmanshu Dhulia's gangster-thriller is set against the platform of Uttar Pradesh-based mafia which deals with the political and industrial powers in the state. Dhulia factor is easily seen in the movie as most of the scenes are raw, dusty and unique in its own way.
  • The story of movie revolves around a character Raja Mishra, a commoner, who later turns Bullett Raja with a not so common notorious attitude.

Raja is the man who lives his life on his terms and is famous in society for the social work keeping respect on top priority.
  • Resembling with the character of Langda Tyagi, Saif has played the character who commands respect as well as make sure that he respect women. The acting and body language of Saif will definitely surprise you.
  • Sonakshi Sinha is looking beautiful but nothing different from her earlier movies. She also doesn't get much to do. While on the other hand Vidyut Jamwal has given an astonishing performance.
  • One should go and watch Bullett Raja if he wants to see something different from Bollywood with action, thrill and drama.

Bollywood movie review: Saif Ali Khan manages to pump it up for Bullet Raja'

Only he, and the plot, loses steam mid-way, ruining what could've turned into a charming, wacky action thriller

By

Saif Ali Khan's played numerous parts, but none as impactful as the conniving Langda Tyagi in Vishal Bharadwaj's desi take on Shakespeare's Othello - Omkara'. He might have resorted to playing his suave, charming self in his recent movies, but none matched Langda's menacing achievements.

And that's probably why he chose to return to the rustic bylanes of the notorious UP terrains to play a trigger-happy goon.

Only, here the rouge Raja isn't as ambitious as Langda, and waits for life's tragedies to trigger him off. His Bullet Raja' would rather abandon his infamous adventures to take up a normal job and look after his family.

Destiny, however, had other plans for him.

He and his new-found, best-bud Rudra get roped into a string of attacks and counter-attacks, playing what director Tigmanshu Dhulia brands as "political commandoes".

The bromance is on full throttle, and when they aren't dancing or busy expanding their gangs, they are busy pumping bullets into all and sundry.

It's an endearing friendship, no doubt, and one that even finds similarity to the legendary Sholay' pals, but Dhulia's inability to create enough zest in their life leaves us detached after a point.

Probably the massive blow Dhulia causes at the end of part 1 had something to do with Bullet Raja's mighty fall.

While his genius is evident, not just in his narrative, but also in his dialogues, it's unfortunate his screenplay doesn't match up.

He and Amaresh Misra pen an incredible story around botherhood, but mid-way they lose steam and embark on a rather tedious blood battle that highlights an-eye-for-an-eye-leaves-everyone-blind theory. Only Dhulia manages to tweak this, but his efforts are half-baked and not executed with honesty.

In fact, the end is rather predictable, even though Dhulia would have wished otherwise.

His big exposure in the grand finale, however, isn't explained adequately, making his attempt rather lame and exaggerated.

He's also guilty of puncturing his story with innumerable songs, some that aren't even pleasing to the ear.

The star of the Bullet Raja' brigade is undoubtedly Jimmy Sheirgill. He's incredible talented and wins us over as the loyal Rudra. There's never a moment, nor an emotion, that Jimmy doesn't get right.

Saif, unfortunately, comes a close second. If only his expression were as colourful as his silk shirts and linen kurtas, he would have owned his place in the spotlight. Sadly, the excessive botox jabs leaves his expressions frozen, never really allowing us to understand his real sentiments.

That said, he does walk away with some killer lines. "I do not tolerate vulgarity in religious matters," or "I'm not a hunter because I don't kill animals, I only invoke the animal instincts in them". And, he mouths them with remarkable panache, reminding us of his fun days with the boys in Farhan Akhtar's Dil Chahta Hai'.

Even his flirtations are charming, and we believe him when he announces his glorious achievements as a man who hooked up with 154 women. The 155th girl is the one we meet in 'Bullet Raja'.

There's also the amusing encounters with the baddies that Saif plays with aplomb. His quirky, competitive personality emerges as he joins Rudra in executing the men on their hit-list. Alas, these are far too few.

His rustic flavour also takes a backseat, with his accent coming on and off at random, creating an obvious disconnect with Raja.

Among the baddies, and there are quite a few of them here, seasoned actors Chunky Pandey, Raj Babbar, Gulshan bad man' Grover and Ravi Kishen pack a punch. Only, they are unable to stand out in this maddening crowd. Each plays his part earnestly, but the lack of a well-etched-out character sketch harms their efforts considerably.

Vidyut Jamal also enters the battle ground and flexes his muscle considerably, but his stony expression and staccato dialogue delivery leaves him wooden and unappealing.

The women, and there are only two here, are pretty, but Dhulia doesn't give them much to do apart from dancing. Sonakshi Sinha's the Bengali girl who wins Raja over, and dances with him at a Mumbai club, while Mahie Gill is the one who flirts with him after her item dance.

Sinha sleepwalks through her part as the pretty girl, while Mahie plays her staple role as a needy woman. It's really tragic that their true potential isn't explored.

While Dhulia deserves applause for attempting to create a quirky action thriller, he doesn't nail it.

Even though the last-part turns out into an incoherent mess, the first-half is immensely entertaining. We only wish that tone was maintained till the very end. Unfortunately, it doesn't.

Bullett Raja Review: The Last Word

Bullett Raja with its grave minuses and fewer plusses is an underwhelming film much to my disbelief. The last few films of Dhulia had made me rank him amongst the top notch filmmakers of this generation. Unfortunately the man goes wrong with his favorite recipe of showcasing the ills of political nexus, as he hands out a story that barely has any moments and remains flat for most part. Saif Ali Khan and Jimmy Shergill's chemistry is the only best part from the acting section. But in all its triteness, Bullett Raja is Dhulia's most uninspired work till date. I am going with a 2/5 with the remark that commercial cinema is definitely not the director's cup of tea.

Bullet Raja is a mediocre actioner, thanks to the inconsistency of Saif Ali Khan as the lead actor and Tigmanshu Dhulia as the filmmaker who ensure audience doesn,t deserve them in such messed up arrangements.

Bullett Raja will bore you to death

http://www.rediff.com/movies/review/review-bullett-raja-will-bore-you-to-death/20131129.htm

While no two people can like the same kind of films or even agree on the definition of a good film, it is difficult to judge if even hardcore Saif Ali Khan fans should go for this one.
