6 Reasons Why BULLET RAJA Rocks

Bullet Raja is an entertaining film from start to finish that respects your brains as well as the forces of gravity. Saif Ali Khan lives the part, and puts in a solid performance that holds the film together.
By IndiaTimes | November 29, 2013, 10:36 am IST

6 SCREENPLAY

Bullet Raja's plot is packed several twists and turns, and has at least a dozen significant characters. But the screenplay rarely loses track, (save for a routine romantic angle) and brings a proper closure to all these subplots without leaving behind any unanswered questions. Despite introducing a new character every 20 minutes, the writer keeps a thorough check on where the story is headed. This one is Race set in the badlands of India.

BULLET RAJA

5 DIRECTION

Tigmanshu keeps the setting and characters raw, and stays away from caricatures we are increasingly getting sick of in most recent action flicks. Everyone is good or bad with a clear motive, and there is little room for redemption. Despite a crowded setup, the plot unravels at a brisk pace, and yet it does complete justice to each and every character introduced through the course of the film. Even if there are loopholes in the plot, it all happens at such a fast pace that you really don't have time to think about the odd inconsistency. The director does not allow the baggage of his national award winning films to distract his approach, and makes an entertaining film accessible to all. Unlike other filmmakers of parallel cinema who have often botched up commercial projects, Tigmanshu gets the balance just-right. He knows he is not making a Paan Singh Tomar, and that clarity is what makes this film such a fun watch.

BULLET RAJA

4 ACTION

The action sequences shot on the streets of middle India, have a lot of style in them. At the same time, the film respects 'gravity' and does not go into the Telugu remake mode. There is a certain action-comic like treatment to the film, best done before this by Kashyap in Dabangg (this is what the sequel should have been like). As Saif rightly said at a recent event, Bullet Raja has action, but not violence.

BULLET RAJA

3 ENSEMBLE

Half of Bullet Raja's victory is in its choice of actors. Right from Jimmy Shergill who does a confident job as the parallel hero (he is even referred to as mere Shashi Kapoor in one scene), to the likes of Raj Babbar, Gulshan Grover, Ravi Kissen, Sharat Saxena, Chunkey Pandey, Vidyut Jamwval and many other powerful supporting actors; every actor has a well defined role and makes an impression in whatever scene he has been given.

BULLET RAJA

2 DIALOGUES

Bullet Raja has some of the most deliciously written lines of the season. Without ever-getting talk heavy, the film maintains a smooth tempo and the director peppers the non-stop action, heavy-duty gunfire and fistfights with brilliant doses of sarcasm and dark humour. So even if action is not your cup of tea, there is never a dull moment in the film, thanks to its crisp one-liners.

BULLET RAJA

1 SAIF ALI KHAN

This is an actor who is clearly having a lot of fun. And that shows in every frame of this film. As Raja Misra - For the first time, Saif commands the screen presence of a larger-than-life desi-hero; and comes out with flying colours. Saif skillfully uses his swagger and penchant for straight-faced wit, to give the character of Bullet Raja a unique personality that is thankfully not a wannabe Chulbul Pandey. Having played the Anari all this while, Saif finally becomes a Khiladi with this film.

Movie Review - Bullett Raja
Cast - Saif Ali Khan , Sonakshi Sinha, Jimmy Shergill,Vidyut Jamwal
Director - Tigmanshu Dhulia
Producer - Rahul Mittra , Nitin Tej Ahuja,Tigmanshu Dhulia
Music - Sajid - Wajid

Rating - 3.5/ 5

Tigmanshu Dhulia is back with his new movie Bullett Raja , features Saif Ali Khan , Sonakshi Sinha and Jimmy Shergill.

Story of the movie revolves around Raja Mishra , who is a common man gets transformed into Bullett Raja. He is a gangster having full attitude. Saif Ali Khan suits completely in the character of Bullett Raja. In past we have seen Saif Ali Khan in a very stylish role in movies like Cocktail , Love Aajkal but this time Saif has done something new in Bullet Raja.

Bullett Raja is a comman man who fights against system and sets his own rules. He is very loyal friend and a faithful lover.Saif Ali Khan's Look in this movie will remind you the old looks of Saif which we have seen in movies like Main Khiladi Tu Anari.

Saif Ali Khan has done outstanding job in the character of Bullet Raja , where Sonakshi's performance is very average. Chemistry between Saif and Sonakshi is something which lacks in the movie.

Music of the film is given by Sajid-Wajid , Except one song " Tammanche Pe Disco" none of the song is catchy.

Final Verdict : Watch This Movie for Tigmanshu Dhulia's Brilliant Direction and Saif Ali Khan's Outstanding Performance.

Bullett Raja movie review: Tigmanshu Dhulia hits the bull's-eye with guns and gore!

Challenging brainless action movies that our B-town directors have been selling blatantly with alarming regularity-in the name of blockbusters or crowd pullers-Tigmanshu Dhulia gives us a delicious blood-battle saga. The intelligent filmmaker blends high-octane drama and power-packed action beautifully with a concrete plot, taut editing and excellent writing to produce an engaging watch!

Do Rs 100 crore movies have to be brain-dead mass pullers? Do stories have to be crafted keeping in mind what's in' with an air of arrogance that tends to take cinegoers' wisdom for granted? And most importantly, is it mandatory for movie buffs to leave their brains at home when they walk into a movie theater and then invariably get served mindless masala flicks in the name of entertainment?

In this day and age when entering the glamorous club of Rs 100 crore seems to be the only motive of our directors, Tigmanshu Dhulia's Bullett Raja should ideally be served as a template especially to those who believe that the business of entertainment is trend-driven as opposed to logic-driven. In his attempt to engage the audience, Dhulia comes up with an electrifying entertainer that demands you to use your brains!

For those who have been cringing at the alarming flourish of Dabangg kinda productions, where the protagonist is larger-than-life; someone who keeps the audiences glued to the seats with his relentless high flying starry kicks and power-packed punches, Dhulia's Bullett Raja comes across as a breath of fresh air. It certainly is a time for our high profile film directors to watch Dhulia's latest endeavour to get a clear idea about how a fine cinematic experience can be creatively crafted. In this one, even if our hero wanders around with the machismo of a desi cowboy while totting guns, his antics never defy your ability to think. The director certainly has a grip on the narrative and he knows how to draw the proverbiallaxman rekha between fiction and facts without going overboard.

Moving over the Rowdies and the Tigers and the Singhams -who should, by now, die a shameful death-thanks to the arrival of the new age Raja..err Bullett Raja who keeps you entertained without taking your IQ for granted. This tale is rustic, raw and unapologetic with lots of believable twists and turns that leave you wondering what will happen next. Dhulia keeps both the intensity and intrigue element of his earlier movies like Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster and Paan Singh Tomar intact as he portrays his story set in the backdrop of Uttar Pradesh's goondaraj.

Following the trajectory of hot headed Raja Mishra aka Saif Ali Khan Bullett Raja's story should not be unraveled in words, for the attempt may dilute the essence of the action thriller. Instead we give you a list of pluses (and a few misses) that makes this flick an entertaining watch.

Amidst the showers of bullets being sprayed in almost every second frame (to exaggerate) this movie follows a definite path to unveil the story in a gripping manner.

Fiery and impactful dialogues will make you giggle and think at the same time. For instance when Saif Ali Khan is suggested to think twice before seeking revenge against his opponents our hero goes- Bhai mara hai hamara, badla lena parampara hai. Koi corporate culture nahin hai ki agli deal mein profit ya loss adjust kar lenge. The lines are really quirky and stay true to the situations and believable for the characters who mouth them, throughout the film.

Possibly the best role Saif has played ever after Langda Tyagi in Vishal Bhardwaj's Omkara. Saif's Raja Mishra aka Bullett Raja is rooted and raw.

Jimmy Shergill has once again made us ask the pertinent question-why has the good looking Punjabi lad has remained underrated in our movies despite his commendable acting skills? Shergill is never off key in any of his scenes.

Sonakshi Sinha has played her part well. Raj Babbar is fine with his portrayal of an influential politician, while Vidyut Jamwal looks impressive with his solid screen presence and his impossible to match action moves if not exactly with his acting chops.

Our verdict:

At 2 hours and 20 minutes Tigmanshu Dhulia's Bullett Raja succeeds at hitting the bull's eye with a with, quirky and engaging shot of entertainment. Go, pull the trigger this weekend!

Genre:
Action

Let's get straight to the point here. Bullett Raja doesn't have the same substance that you have seen in Tigmanshu Dhulia's earlier films. Anybody expecting powerful products like Paan Singh Tomar or Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster will be hugely disappointed. In fact, Bullett Raja falls in the category of loud Bollywood masala films like Dabangg and Singham where there is everything including a star actor, good looking actress, brother and gun battle, but a good story.
For almost first 30 minutes or so, nothing special is there in the film, and it seems that Bullett Raja will spin its wheels and rake in money through the over-scaled action-packed sequences, super-loud gun battles and comic dialogues. There are unreasonable stretches and distractions that should have been shunned to deliver a better film.
Set against the backdrop of the UP politics and mafia, we are in the company of Rudra (Jimmy Shergill) and Raja (Saif Ali Khan), who both seem a bit creaky as they become the biggest gangsters of UP with a help of a UP politician. Later, Rudra is killed by a businessman and the entire story shifts to Raja's revenge for his brother-like-friend.
The story is unconvincing and at many points you might feel that the movie is going haywire. In fact, uncanny behaviour of the characters might irritate you in the first half. The film has a strong UP connect. From dialogues to accent, Tigmanshu Dhulia has focused on minute details.
The second half of the film is much better that the first half, and by the end of the film you might be satisfied. The film's direction and story have many loopholes, but it is backed by some powerful performances. Saif Ali Khan as rustic Raja has justified his role. The actor has come out of his comfort zone and has given a noteworthy performance in this film. Jimmy Shergill has shown why he is a talented actor, and he deserves much more than what he has got in Bollywood. Gulshan Grover and Ravi Kishan have also given a noteworthy performance. Vidyut Jamwal has a strong screen presence. The only disappointing actor in the film is Sonakshi Sinha.
Music is also a major drawback of the film. Not just the film has been overloaded with boring songs, but they also come at the wrong times. Despite all these weaknesses, Bullett Raja is not that bad a film. In fact, last 20 minutes are engrossing. You can watch Bullet Raja if you have nothing special to do this weekend.
Cons
1) Music is a major drawback of the film
2) Tigmanshu Dhulia has not delivered as per expectations. There were huge expectations from him after Paan Singh Tomar and Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster returns
3) Dialogues are a strong point of Dhulia's film. But in Bullett Raja, dialogues will also disappoint you.
Pros
1) The film is backed by brilliant acting performances.
2) Bullett Raja is set against the backdrop of the UP politics and mafia. From locations to accent, Tigamanshu has focused on minute details.
3) Second half is engrossing.

Bullett Raja movie review

Cast:Saif Ali Khan, Jimmy Shergill, Sonakshi Sinha and Vidyut Jammwal
Director: Tigmanshu Dhulia

SPOILERS AHEAD

From Raj Kapoor and Rajendra Kumar in Sangam to Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan in Sholay, filmy friendships have flourished with formulistic fervour in our films.

It takes guts to turn the conventional formulistic cinema about male bonding and revenge into a tightly wound intelligently scripted and judiciously executed drama of political subterfuge in Uttar Pradesh, a favourite haunt for Tigmanshu Dhulia's cinema, here turned into a hotbed of intrigue and drama.

Bullett Raja is woven around characters who aren't particular about the company or the morals that they keep. Politicians and entrepreneurs hobnob with criminals and criminals end up becoming heroes of the masses just because democracy in India gives us little to choose from.

Saif Ali Khan's Raja Misra (no 'h' in the surname, plij) is a scummy sort of Robin Hood in Lucknow whom we meet initially as he escapes with his life from goons in screeching cars by gatecrashing into a wedding. There he meets Rudra (Jimmy Shergill). Then begins a kind of affable bonding between the two men, and it goes beyond the precincts of the maudlin friendships we've seen in our films so far.

Saif and Jimmy, brilliant actors both, bring a kind of brusque but unbreakable friendship between them, a bonding that you know only death can break. And it does.

Dhulia, in his most mass-oriented cinematic outing to date, brings a lot of Jai-Veeru's Sholay bonding into play. The two actors do the rest. They gamely sink their teeth into the morass of Indian politics, giving a stirring dignity to inherently unsavoury episodes from the murky politics of Uttar Pradesh.

Dhulia's skills as a raconteur of remarkable aptitudes was most evident in Paan Singh Tomar. Here, he attempts something even more daring. He merges mythological and historical allusions into current politics and he weds heroism and hooliganism without causing any discernible damage to his work's aesthetics.

Saif's character, a mix of goon and boon, gun and grins doesn't tire of reminding his adversaries of his Brahminical roots. He also has a strange penchant for quoting from the scriptures at the most inopportune moments.

This is a film about the scummy people who govern our country from the fringes. They are the kind of characters who either end up rich or dead. We can only curse them under our breath. And yet the spoken language of the characters remains liberated from overt profanities. The same goes for the characters themselves, so lowly and yet redeemed by unexpected bouts of humour and even compassion.

The way Saif's Raja Misra meets Sonakshi's sketchily-written character and the manner in which the script allows him to warm up to her without wasting time is a marvel of scriptural balance. Indeed, Dhulia in his most nakedly commercial outing, catches the routine friends-on-a-rampage plot by its lapels and goes for the kill with splendid skill.

This is a fearless film. It is not afraid to celebrate the much dreaded and abused traditional filmy formula. And then, Dhulia takes his audacity from city to city in Uttar Pradesh. The jagged but constantly coherent plot takes the very conventional characters (good-bad heroes, bad-bad villains, a damsel in distress and lots of decadent politicians) on a bumpy journey across the politics of the cow-belt where there are no sacred cows. Only brazen wolves.

The film's reckless momentum is sustained and controlled by Dhulia's technicians who hit the right notes while taking a route that hardly affords safe options. Dangerously careening towards an anarchic world, Bullett Raja swerves away from catastrophe underlining the plot and succeeds spectacularly in creating a world where rampage is the rule.

The soundrack is remarkably authentic, and I don't mean the awful songs. Our cinema, even the most mature variety, still adheres to the radio-play style of dialogue delivery where only one character speaks at one time. Tigmanshu Dhulia allows the words to spill out of his characters as and how they appear natural.

Saif's in full command of the spoken and unspoken language. Here's an actor who can bring gravitas to his character without weighing it down in self-importance. Saif has great support from the ever-reliable Jimmy Shergill. Their bonding is remarkable, and sometimes wickedly over-the-top.

Dhulia's treatment of violence in the hinterland is sharp and constantly tongue-in-cheek. Midway through the mayhem he brings in Vidyut Jammwal (described picturesquely as Chambal Ka Chowkidar) to bring our scummy hero Raja Misra under control.

Do Jammwal's dexterous kicks succeed in stemming the mayhem? Boy, oh boy, do they! Bullett Raja is a subverted comic book adventure. Dhulia goes masala with a bang. And what a bang-bang!

Guns, girls (yes, even an item song by Mahie Gill where she insists she doesn't want to be touched when all her movements suggest quite the opposite), grime and glory come together in a layered tale of corruption, politics and kinetic camaraderie.

The songs brakes the pace. But then you really can't have a formula film without the song breaks.

It takes a politically savvy storyteller of Dhulia's skills to convert the lowest ebb of our politics into an occasion of high drama.

Movie Review: Bullet Raja is brimmed with action and comic scenes

New Delhi, Fri, 29 Nov 2013NI Wire
inShare

Directed by: Tigmanshu Dhulia

Produced by: Rahul Mittra, Nitin Tej Ahuja, Tigmanshu Dhulia

Cast of Bullet Raja: Saif Ali Khan (as Raja Mishra), Sonakshi Sinha (as Mitali), Jimmy Shergill (as Rudra Pratap), Chunky Pandey, Ravi Kishan (as Sumer Yadav), Gulshan Grover (as Bajaj), Vidyut Jamwal (as Arun Singh), Raj Babbar (as Ram Babu Shukla)

"Watch Bullet Raja for Saif, Jimmy and Vidyut. Film is brimmed with action and political chaos. But there are many, actually every other dialogue is funny."

Story and Review:

Bullet Raja is set in the background of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Raja Mishra played by Saif and Rudra Pratap played by Jimmy, meets each other in a wedding and become quick friends. At the same time a local landowner sends some punks to kill Rudra and take over his land, but Raja and Rudra kill them all and land owner is left saying "har bar ye do hi aadmi kyun hote hai?sholay ki tarah".

Rudra and Raja continue their fight first against the caste-ridden UP politics and unjustice and become the good gangsters. They gain an upper-hand of Ram Babu Shukla a local politician who in-turn asks them to do take out his enemy.

In between, Raja also meets Mitali played by Sonakshi SInha, a Bengali girl who has a dream of becoming an actress. However after meeting with Raja, Mitali falls in love with her and forgets about her dream and is ready to start a new life with him.

However, Raja and Rudra dominance is troubling other people around and Arun Singh is sent to kill the Ravana i.e. Raja.

Saif Ali Khan has portrayed the role of Raja Mishra superbly with the UP accent, bravery, arrogance, anger and comic timings. But it is Jimmy Shergill who steals the show with his dialogue delivery, comic timing and acting.

Sonakshi Sinha is now repeating her roles from Dabangg.

All other characters, Chunky Pandey, Gulshan Grover and Raj Babbar have also played their characters well.

The other person to watch out for is Vidyut Jamwal, who is amazingly fit and his action scenes are delight to watch.

Tigmanshu (of Gangs of Wasseypur fame) who is saying that it is his first most commercial film has brilliantly depicted UP and the politics that goes out there. Songs are a bit disappointing though.

All in all, Bullet Raja is a masala film that has romance, action and political drama.

Bullet Raja Has Low Opening

Friday 29th November 2013 11.30 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

The low initials continue with Bullet Raja after the poor starts last week of Singh Saab The Great and Gori Tere Pyaar Mein. Bullet Raja has opened to around 25-30% collections, both multiplexes and single screens are in the same range.

The film has a better release than last week's two releases with more shows at multiplexes but will have to depend on word of mouth.

The opening in places like Lucknow and Kanpur where it has potential to do better due to local content was also not up to the mark. The film probably has better chances in UP but even there wull have to show a quick jump in collections.

BO update: Mixed start for 'Bullett Raja'

By Taran Adarsh, November 29, 2013 - 13:33 IST

The Saif Ali Khan - Sonakshi Sinha starrer BULLETT RAJA, which is set in North India, was expected to open well in North circuits, especially in centres of U.P. While the opening shows of the film were quite good in certain parts of U.P., the general opening ranged from average to below average in several circuits. The occupancy was lower in Mumbai, but, of late, the opening shows of several films, including last week releases, were below the mark, but picked up during the course of the day, depending on the merits of the film.

BULLETT RAJA was never expected to start with a bang thanks to the lack of popular soundtrack. However, the film has the potential to strike a chord and like most Tigmanshu Dhulia movies, it is expected to gather momentum by late noon/evening shows.

Meanwhile, last week's releases, GORI TERE PYAAR MEIN! and SINGH SAAB THE GREAT, have been sidelined at major plexes, but GOLIYON KI RAASLEELA RAM-LEELA continues to perform well and is expected to be the second choice of moviegoers this weekend, after BULLETT RAJA.
