When I saw Dil Se for the first time I found nothing special but then I re-watched it last year and I could see why it was a bigger hit in overseas.

Romance was quite subtle as compared to other BW movies during that time.

The concept of falling in love with an emotionally distant person was also something different, especially with a girl.

The songs depicted escapism while the movie was all about realism.

I was reading about this movie--and it talked about how it talks about 7 shades of love (1) attraction (2) infatuation (3) love (4) reverence (5) worship (6) obsession (7) death --also depicted in song Satrangi Re. I don't think a lot of people got this either.

If the movie was released today it would have been a big hit.
