Film: Madras Cafe
Cast: John Abraham, Nargis Fakhri, Prakash Belawade, Siddhartha Basu, Ajay Rathnam, Raashi Khanna Director: Shoojit Sircar Certification: U/A Rating: ***

Attached to Madras Cafe are the trailers ofZanjeer, Boss, and Phata Poster Nikla Hero. Not to judge the films by their trailers, but it's uncanny how similar the three look and feel in their common styles borrowed (now appropriated) from commercial South-Indian potboilers: violent B-movies laced with in-your-face humor and a sprinkling of romance. Not to mention the lot we've suffered so far: Himmatwala, Policegiri, Zila Ghaziabad, and their kin. Madras Cafe bravely bucks the trend. A politically astute (sensitive?) mainstream film spanning the years from 1987-1991, with established actors, no songs, and uncompromised detailing; it is the fictionalized account of events leading up to the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi.

In a predictable trend, if a film's opening titles are a classic text-on-black you may assume with near certainty that it is going to be a sensible film. Not that experimenting with opening credits doesn't often make for sensible cinema, but the simplicity of the concept usually foretells complexity of the story to follow.

And Madras Cafe is a complicated film. Somnath Dey and Shubendu Bhattacharya's screenplay's form is impressively inspired from Hollywood political thrillers. Syriana and Green Zone come to mind, but there are fewer tracks to follow here. A barrage of information upfront outlines the tempestuous politics of Lanka, and the evolution of the Tamil separatists incarnating as the Tamil Tigers. The writers stick to the winding handrail of larger, known facts deftly inserting the stairs in the form of a fictional account of an army officer who is R&AW's go-to man in Jaffna. Occasionally, however, they glean over what could've construed a critical appraisal of the workings and decisions of the Indian government at the time. It would've been clever to make more direct connections with the flip-flop the Indian authorities were playing with the LTTE. Never indicated in the film for example, is that Gandhi's assassin Thenmozhi Rajaratnam was allegedly a product of official training provided by R&AW!

But this is a minor quibble, the problem with the writing is that it seems the script would've read like a docudrama. More docu, less drama. The writers often struggle to balance explaining the scene, rather than staging it. The makers get caught up in documentary footage, B&W photos, supers, and sporadic subtitles to keep the viewer well armed like a Wiki page, but somewhere miss the opportunity to create more memorable scenes where the action and characters are all that matter.

To be fair, though Vikram Singh's (John Abraham) moment of personal loss is exceptionally well handled by Shoojit Sircar as is the third act of the film, when the drama builds up nicely, hurtling towards the inevitability of the assassination. To go the distance in a pre-determined finale with no silver lining is a brave, applause-worthy move on its own. It almost makes the context and preceding two-thirds irrelevant. Sircar's strength as a director shines in the excellent detailing: the edging in of Western culture in the jungles of Jaffna in the form of Coca Cola, the corridors of R&AW, period-specific trivialities, and perfect synchronization of the technical departments. Keep a tab on this director. Bigger, better things are yet to come from him yet, I suspect.

One of John Abraham's more nuanced performances (remember, we last saw him inShootout at Wadala), he is perfectly convincing as the man in charge of ops in Jaffna. His exchanges with the UK-based reporter played by Nargis Fakhri are less plausible. She speaks in English. He replies in Hindi. After a very shaky opening scene, she gets more comfortable in her role doling out her sources to the officer. Siddartha Basu in his first movie role is more than in control. Other actors that deserve mention include Prakash Belawadi and the superbly cast Rashi Khanna as the pining army wife.

Even though the film ever-so-slightly under-delivers, we should be blessed that it got made at all. There is outrage from the strangest nooks of the country over flimsiest of issues in our films, and Abraham and Sircar would've been well aware of what they're embarking on. But this charged political thriller, despite its flaws, is a leap in the right direction - away from that other "Madras"-titled film and its ilk - that deserves our support. If nothing else, it'll give you an acute insight and a timely reminder of the turmoil our neighbors went through and our country's confounding contribution to the matter.

Hey guys,

Watched Madras Cafe today. And Oh my God! It was simply breathtaking. Worth every buck I spent to watch it. It is a complete political thriller and that too, of a level that matches hollywood movies.
Great acting, heart touching direction.
Story is simple. The events that lead to the Ex prime minister's assassination. But the way they have weaved the story for each character is simply brilliant.
John Abraham and Shoojit Sircar should do many many many more, such movies and I'm sure I'll watch each of them.
Every actor was brilliant. Even Nargis Fakhri. Can you imagine it?😆 Perfect casting. And some of the characters were looking so real, you would actually imagine them to be the real LTTE guys, especially Anna and Mallya. And the guy who played Bala deserves a standing ovation.👏
But what worked was the way the human emotions were portrayed, especially of the Tamil victims and when the PM is assassinated. It was moving and I actually had tears in my eyes seeing innocent people being killed for no fault of theirs. And the climax of the movie was so spine chilling, everyone in the theatre was holding their breaths, including me.
The best thing was that, there wasn't a single song in the entire movie, except for the end. And I think that made the movie perfect, because I've always felt that for such movies, songs spoil the entire mood of the movie.

Who's says John Abraham can't act? (*spoiler alert*)
The scene where he cries after his wife's death will actually move you so much, you cannot help but feel for him. And I think that one scene defined John's acting for me. It was one of the best shots of his career.

I really hope this movie makes lots of money, because bollywood should not be just about masala flicks. It should be remembered for movies like this too.

And if you are interested in political thrillers and have atleast a little interest in the LTTE and Rajiv Gandhi's assassination story, you must watch this movie. It is worth it.

all the reviews on tv are praising it...I think John has been very true to his vision in the
making of the film. you can tell by the promos - there are no gimmicky stuff to pull in
audiences...it seems to be a story wanting to be told thru someones perspective and
they did it

i usually dont war maara maari war movies, but this movie...I am sure gonna make
an exception. Nargis Fakhri too seemed so apt for the role in the trailors!! wonder of
wonders!

this subject was ALWAYS going to be controversial...John is no
stranger to controversies (No Smoking?); yet, he went ahead and
made this movie.

Shows behind the soft affable exterior the guy has balls of steel.
To put so much money and time and effort into a very sticky subject
which ALWAYS had the potential to suffer loss of audience due to
policitical sentiments. Bravo John!👍🏼

Madras Cafe: Day 1 (Friday) Box Office Collections

Madras Cafe, given the critics€™ praise began quite well at the box office. Earning a moderate moolah in the range of 4 crores, as per early estimates, the film picked up towards the latter half of the day on Friday.

John Abraham And Nargis Fakkri in Madras Cafe Movie Stills

In the multiplexes, the film fared better as urban centres and metropolitan cities raked up better earnings as contrast to their single screens counterparts.

Chennai Express€˜ box office grip might have begin to loosen and the film will have good space to show its caliber at the box office before the release of Satyagraha that will claim the single screen market.

Madras Cafe Movie Review. Ratings - 4/5.

It is very hard to make a film in India based on real life incidents. Political parties and many social groups puts immense pressure to film makers that they have to be mostly fictional in depicting reality. But credit to Shoojit Sircar that he had the guts to make a film on Sri Lankan Civil War and its further implications on Indian Political scenario. He keeps the story as realistic as possible with changing the name of the character.

Madras Cafe is a political thriller film directed by Shoojit Sircar of 'Vicky Donor' and 'Yahaan' fame. Madras Cafe stars John Abraham, Nargis Fakhri, Rashi Khanna, Siddhartha Basu in lead roles. The film is set in the late 80s and early 1990s, during the time of Sri Lankan civil war and the assassination of Indian Ex Prime Minister.
Story - There is a big political unrest in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. With rebel group LTF headed by Anna (Ajay ratnam) taking charge of this place and creating huge insurgency. Vikram Singh (John Abraham) of RAW is assigned a work to go to Jaffna and create difference in LTF members. So that this militant group can be destroyed and peace and harmony return to this place. But while going through the mission many unusual things happens to Vikram and finally how he discovers a big master plan is building up to assassinate Ex Prime Minister of India is the story of the film. Story of the film revolves around India, Sri Lanka, Singapore, UK and Thailand.

Performance - John Abraham does full justice to Vikram Singh character and gives an honest performance. It is easily one of his best performance till date, if not the best. Nargis Fakhri acting is first rated as war correspondent and a big improvement from her first outing Rockstar. Siddhartha Basu as Robin Dutt (RD) is just revelation in the film. He gets a challenging role and gives A+ performance. Prakash Belawadi as Bala gives a first rated performance Ajay Ratnam as Anna looks real and gives an honest performance. Raashi Khanna does justice to her small role as John's wife.

Shoojit Sircar as director again excels in this project. His direction is outstanding and film looks absolute real. Cinematography of the film is fantastic. Wars and action scenes looks raw, real and violent. Script of the movie is winner. Finally Madras Cafe is a political thriller based on true incidents and it keeps you in edge of your seat.

Verdict - Madras Cafe rides on good script power. Plus a superb direction by talented Shoojit Sircar with lead actors totally playing to the characters. Film looks real and editing is sharp. Overall film is outstanding and will find audiences mainly in classes. It may surprise the box office with bringing more than expected returns. A must watch film!

Ratings - 3.5 and another half for trying such subject which is seldom tried in Bollywood.

John Abraham and Shoojit Sircar should do many many many more, such movies and I'm sure I'll watch each of them. Yes they will...Make an amazing team. But films should go sucessful too to encourage such type of cinema
Every actor was brilliant. Even Nargis Fakhri. Can you imagine it?😆She was awesome in part she was forced to leave SL...and angry on John. She bought maturity and seriousness in character.
Perfect casting. And some of the characters were looking so real, you would actually imagine them to be the real LTTE guys, especially Anna and Mallya. And the guy who played Bala deserves a standing ovation.👏 He was so real and very nicely sketched and played character, even Siddharth Basu as was Fantastic.
But what worked was the way the human emotions were portrayed, especially of the Tamil victims and when the PM is assassinated. It was moving and I actually had tears in my eyes seeing innocent people being killed for no fault of theirs. And the climax of the movie was so spine chilling, everyone in the theatre was holding their breaths, including me.It was indeed...every single person was kept engaged in the second half..so gripping..

It was one of the best shots of his career. Yes, he portrayed beautifully... I cried as he cried...the feeling of not able to save his wife is terrible. Also in the climax. where he is left helpless even tough they tried most without govt's help

I really hope this movie makes lots of money, because bollywood should not be just about masala flicks. It should be remembered for movies like this too.
