Chennai Express Review

And the wait is finally over for all the SRK fans who were waiting for the movie to hit the cinemas. Chennai Express has been the most awaited film for various reasons. A special reason which embarked few days back was King Khan's "Friendship-Hug" to fellow superstar Salman Khan in a function. So not only SRK fans watches Chennai Express, But the film will (definitely) be watched by Salman Khan fans too.

The film's story has been told many times earlier. Rahul (Shahrukh Khan) is a 40 year old man who goes on a journey to a town in Tamil Nadu to fulfill the last wish of his grandfather (Lekh Tandon) to have his ashes immersed in Rameshwaram. On his way, he meets a South Indian girl Meenamma a.k.a Meena (Deepika Padukone) who wants to flee from the clutches of her father (Sathyaraj) who wants her to get married to a person she doesn't love Thangaballi(Nikitin Dheer).

Meena is being escorted back home by four beefy cousins after a failed attempt to flee her village. Rahul is caught in the game that the girl decides to play with her dad (Which might be next-to-impossible).

As i informed earlier, The film's story has been told several times by various Film makers. What makes the movie special here is the finest execution by Rohit Shetty who is the "King" of Masala Pot Boilers.

Shahrukh Khan as Rahul is just amazing. Once again, King Khan goes on to prove that he is just unbeatable. Especially when he opens up his stretch-arms (The SRK Trade Mark). So in that case, welcome back to the world of "Badshah". Deepika Padukone is the finest actress of the country and we cannot deny this fact, But with Chennai Express character, she will steal your heart and make you fall in love with her again and again. Sathyaraj in his first Hindi film is just awesome. Back home in South, Sathyaraj is considered a legend. Nikitin Dheer, Mukesh Tiwari and others land in with a good support.

Yes, this is an out an out Rohit Shetty masala entertainer with his own trade mark – flying bodies and cars. People may also say that this is Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge in a Rohit Shetty style, but i will say this a romantic action adventure from the director who just know how to entertain the common man. The production value and camera-work is top notch. Music wise, the film's songs are already a chart-buster. Editing is little weak and drags at many part. Two songs in the second half looked forceful.

My final words for Chennai Express? Board this Train (Blindly) as this is the only entertainer which has arrived after a long time.

Chennai Express - Nonstop entertainer

Vishal Verma, IndiaGlitz [Friday, August 09, 2013]

What is it all about?

Entertainment with no strings attached.. Chennai Express is a steady always ready for fun entertainer which gives your worries a 'po' for those 142 minutes.. paisa vasool..

UTV, Red Chilies, SRK and Rohit Shetty live up to the hype and give a massy hard core entertainer as ordered by Rohit Shetty school of films which only purpose is to entertain and de stress the audience..

A perfect popcorn film lightweight, low in those artistic cinematic nutrients but remarkably satisfying as a hard core entertainer..

The Story

We have had Imtiaz Ali version of Dilwale Dhulaniya Le Jayeinge in Jab We Met.. Chennai Express is Rohit Shetty version of DDLJ soaked in complete Rohit Shetty ishtyle where Yunus Sajawal and Robin Bhatt introduce us to Rahul (SRK) a 40 year old single ready to mingle but doesn,t get time due to his personal commitments.. one day he embarks on a journey to a town in Tamil Nadu to fulfill the last wish of his grandfather to have his ashes immersed in Rameshwaram. During the journey he meets a South Indian girl, Meena (Deepika Padukone), who wants to flee from the clutches of her father (Sathyaraj) , who wants her to get married to a person she doesn't love (Nikitin Dheer). Series of adventure then follows filled with fun, masti, romance..

What to look out for

An entertainer right from the word go which refuses to go.. Chennai Express again proves that Rohit Shetty is a diehard bollywood lover.. and a filmmaker who understands the pulse of his audience and the image of his lead actor and moulds it so well with his script that the characters in his movie look tailor made for that role.. he makes SRK and Deepika such a delightful, ordinary-extraordinary pair. Their sequences are hilarious and thanks to the writers Yunus Sajawal and Robin Bhatt who show great consistency in providing moments of fun, drama, action, romance from time to time as prescribed by the genre..superb job.

King Khan Shah Rukh Khan is in terrific form here.. his fans will have a great time watching SRK at his best and even improvising himself.. a terrifically entertaining performance.

The year 2013 seems to be named after Deepika Padukone who shows such tremendous confidence in her role as Meena.. the actress is outstanding simply brilliant.. her accent, her look, her poise everything is so effortless.. Deepika does complete justice to her role and walks with all the flying colours..Absolutely marvelous performance.

Sathyaraj is fantastic. Nikitin Dheer is good. Good to see the veteran Kamini Kaushal as SRK's grandmother..

Technically the movie is shot brilliantly by Dudley who makes the movie look like post cards from south.

Vishal-Shekhar's soundtrack is in color of the film and sounds good. Titli is melodious, 1234 is peppy. The lungi dance .. tribute to Rajinikanth is also foot tapping.

What not

It doesn,t dares to be different

Conclusion: Chennai Express has all that an entertainment hungry soul of bollywood needs this festive weekend season of Eid.. A kick - ass entertainer which is consistently funny where superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone giving their best along with Rohit Shetty whose name is now synonymous with entertainment.. Chennai Express is a terrifically satisfying joy ride.. if you love bollywood and its masala curry.. hurry.. you won,t be disappointed..

Chennai Express Review -
Aug 8, 2013

3.5/5

Verdict - Chennai Express is funny and entertaining and Shah Rukh Khan's return to form.

Chennai Express is an immensely entertaining film with lots of masala and the thing I absolutely adore: low-brow humor. Not many can do it right (read Sajid Khan) but there are those who can. Rohit Shetty falls in the latter category. As he addresses it in this movie ' "Single screen humor". Oh the joy of laughing at silly humor is easy to disregard but there is a reason why it works - because it's funny.

Chennai Express departs like every other Rohit Shetty vehicle. The comedy seems forced at the start and takes its time to settle but soon the unpretentious mindlessness starts tickling you and you can't help but laugh. His humor is typical. He makes the most basic scenes funny and the comedy is created out of the pointless. I love how there are movie references in every film of his. This time there are Shah Rukh films that get the Shetty treatment and oddly enough, there is one Life of Pi reference (which had me choking, mind you). This film reminded me of certain dramedies of the 90s where every scene has something or the other happening, relevant or irrelevant to the plot. But those abba dabba chabbas are the ones that people remember years later - because it sticks.

The music by Vishal-Shekhar grew on me. I especially like Kashmir Main Tu Kanyakumari and Lungi Dance as far as the "fun" songs are concerned. Amongst the somber ones, Titli and Tera Rasta Chhodoon Na do the trick.

Deepika Paduoke deserves a special mention for working that accent. She is consistently funny and makes up for many laughs.

I don't see any point in talking about how the film is more than what I have said. These days, commercial cinema is not about the story or the acting. (Thankfully there is a plot here and rarely a moment where you get bored). It is all about what star you like or what songs you like. Here's what I'm going to do. I'll talk about the star in question: Shah Rukh Khan.

In Chennai Express, we see many facets of this superstar - funny SRK, romantic SRK, silly SRK and my favorite is saved for last ' angry SRK. Yes, this is Shah Rukh Khan's return to form.

(No self-respecting film critic would gush about an actor in a review but what the hell. I don't consider myself a critic anyway, might as well take the plunge.)

This would be a great time to announce that I'm a huge fan of Shah Rukh Khan. I love many actors in Hindi cinema currently (including all the Khans, in case you're thinking I'm biased) but there are only 3 actors who I call myself a fan of: Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan. I know what you're thinking, he doesn't belong in that company. Why I put him next to such great actors calls for another discussion or a blog post. But if I have to point out why, then I'm a sucker for over-acting. Yes, when actors ham, go completely over the top and don't leave an iota of subtlety in their persona. That.

It's been years since people have truly liked a film of his. With commercial cinema shifting gears from Yash Raj romances to masala potboilers, his place in Bollywood was also uncertain. Salman Khan became the only big thing, after a bad phase in his career (I do love Salman, don't get me wrong. But we are talking about Shah Rukh here). That bad phase was transferred to SRK (To have three 100 crore grossing films in your bad phase, that's what a megastar is).

Either way, SRK and his fanbase saw a downward spiral after 2007. His last big success, which was actually liked by people (or let's say, did not get a bad word of mouth) was Om Shanti Om. Remember that drama at the end? SRK makes a speech here in full melodramatic fashion (with some woman empowerement messages thrown in). Remember those scenes from DDLJ when Raj was beaten up at the end? When he suddenly comes back up in slow motion and all those hockey sticks spring out in unison? Remember the blood-covered face in Koyla? Remember when our hero was beaten and badgered and got up to fight when you thought he was done for!

I said this is a great time to announce I'm a fan of his not because I was hiding but I was busy shielding the blows that him and his films faced for a few years. (When I'm a fan, I am a loyalist, especially during bad times). That time is over. Now it's time to get up and get on that train.

After a long gap, SRK has played a full-fledged comic character. Where he makes fun of himself and lets others in the movie make fun of him. Nothing is taken seriously, except the need to shamelessly entertain by Rohit Shetty and team.

Needless, to say if you're a fan of SRK or Rohit Shetty (like me), you will love Chennai Express. If you aren't, you'll probably not like it anyway. Although, I'm fairly sure you won't hate it. I enjoyed every bit of it and came out sufficiently entertained.

My review on Chennai Express.
If you're wondering does it leave up all the hype that has created? I would say no, It's only funny & entertaining in parts.

SRK needs to retire pronto. He looks old & tired nothing new to deliver. He has done this type of a role over & over through his career. He keeps on repeating this dialogue he says don't under estimate the power of a common man. I hope common men will show him that stop making this stupid movie. Deepika's character Meenaamma even jokes saying he looks 50.

Deepika delivers a mind blowing performance yet again. She not only looks beautiful but has great dialogue delivery.

The biggest minus of this movie is all the dialogues are spoken in Tamil, so you have read subtitle. I don't know what Rohit Shetty was thinking? This has to be his worst movie, it has nothing new to offer. This movie's music is also bad. I only liked the Titali song. The first half of the movie in parts is good but second half is just drag. The best thing about this movie is cinematography, the cameraman has done amazing job.

Chennai Express movie review

Cast:Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone
Director: Rohit Shetty

It's a somewhat long ride that occasionally teeters on the edge of tedium, but it certainly isn't all wrong. Parts of Chennai Express, propelled by a spirit of inspired lunacy that holds the no-holds-barred action comedy in good stead, is markedly better than the sum total of the film.

If only it had enough steam to sustain its momentum all the way to the very end, it would probably have been far more fun to watch.

But do hop aboard. This Express is designed for quite a crazy carousel. If you hang in there and do not allow the many distractions and diversions along the way throw you off track, you might actually find yourself getting into the swing of things, especially in the first half.

Some of the stops en route might seem rather unnecessary and overstretched. In fact, not all the platforms that Chennai Express chugs into are uniformly inviting.
But the thunderous rhythm of the voyage does generate some genuinely funny gags.
Chennai Express warms up pretty quickly and delivers exactly what you would expect from a Rohit Shetty film: runaway entertainment.

Shetty, who obviously does not have any patience for half measures, goes full tilt at the resources at his disposal and rustles up an action-packed culture-clash comedy that has crowd-pleaser emblazoned all over it.

The director throws dollops of good-natured drollery into the thrills-and-spills blender and comes up with a movie that has all the tried-and-tested ingredients of the genre that he has made his own.

Does Chennai Express get to its destination without too many splutters? Well, although the film runs somewhat low on velocity at times and tends to meander a touch in the second half, fans of Shetty's brand of filmmaking will have no reason to feel shortchanged.
What is most unusual about Chennai Express is that at least half its spoken lines are delivered in Tamil. Yet comprehension is never a problem, thanks to a screenplay that tides over the need to explain every dialogue in chaste Hindi.

Barring the lead pair and a Tamil-speaking Sikh policeman (played by Mukesh Tiwari), the principal characters in the film communicate their thoughts in their mother tongue, with the heroine serving as an 'interpreter' wherever the need arises, earning the sobriquet of Ms Subtitle from the wise-cracking male protagonist.

The storyline is no great shakes but the delivery is always rambunctiously lively. Shahrukh Khan is a sweetmeat trader's beloved grandson. The grandpa dies just shy of turning 100.

Rahul's granny (Kamini Kaushal) requests the 40-year-old to fulfil the dead man's last wish to have his ashes immersed in the sea off Rameswaram. Rahul takes the urn ostensibly on a trip to the South but connives with a couple of friends to head to Goa instead. Fate intervenes and his feigned trip on Chennai Express lasts much longer than he had bargained for.

He bumps into Meena, who is being escorted back home by four beefy cousins after a failed attempt to flee her village. Rahul is caught in the game that the girl decides to play with her dad, Durgeshwara (Sathyaraj), in order to avoid marrying a hulky muscleman, Thangaballi (Nikitin Dheer).

Chennai Express promises a superstar in all his many-splendoured glory. And it delivers SRK in a guise that is 75 per cent lover boy-prankster Rahul (that is what his character is predictably called) and the remaining 25 per cent a fearless 'common man' who musters the strength of a hundred able-bodied men when he is pushed to a corner.
Chennai Express also gives Deepika Padukone a vantage seat in the best coach and she makes the most of the opportunity. As a southern mafia don's feisty daughter, Meena, she lays it on really thick, both in terms of accent and body language.

Deepika's diction and lingo appears a tad too labored at times, but, to her credit, she gets it right consistently.

The whole-hearted zeal that SRK and Deepika bring to the table and the steady flow of funny one-liners serve Shetty's purpose well, turning Chennai Express into an elopement-against-all-odds rigmarole that hits the right buttons at most turns.

Amid the flying bodies and cars that the director has a penchant for, the actors make their way through the rubble largely unscathed.

That, of course, does not mean that Chennai Express does not hit its share of rough patches. It does, but thanks to the free-wheeling energy that courses through its body, the smooth passages make up for the ones that are riddled with jerks.
Chennai Express is a full-on masala film that is completely unapologetic about its intentions. And that is its USP.
