'Gippi' Box Office Collection: Karan Johar's Teenage Drama Opens to Poor Response; Earns ?75 Lakh On Day 1

Sonam Nair directorial "Gippi" opened to poor response at the domestic box office on the opening day.

Starring Riya Vij, Taaha Shah and Divya Dutta in leads roles, "Gippi" earned ?75 lakh on the first day facing tough competition from Saif Ali Khan starrer 'zom-com' titled "Go Goa Gone".

Summing up the opening day collections, trade analyst and film critic Taran Adarsh tweeted, "#Gippi Friday 75 lacs."

The much-hyped teenage drama produced by Karan Johar had received rave reviews from the critics but failed to fetch many viewers on the opening day. Falling into the category of a complete multiplex movie, "Gippi" witnessed dull occupancy in metros as well as in single screens.

Deprived of big star cast, "Gippi" is a simple yet interseting movie which revolves around the story of an over-weight teenager played by Riya Vij. The flick is said to be one of the low budget projects of Dharma Productions.

"Honestly speaking, it's ('Gippi') going to be a new experience for all of us because Dharma has never made such a film. We hope this one proves Dharma can also do small-budget films, but at the same time films that have content," Karan Johar told IANS.

"Gippi" hit the screens on Friday (10 May) along with "Go Goa Gone" starring Saif Ali Khan, Kunal Khemu, Vir Das and Anand Tiwari in lead roles.

While 'Gippi' raked ?75 lakh on day 1, "Go Goa Gone" directed by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K. collected ?3.75 crore. "Go Goa Gone" is also said to be a low budget movie but collected far better compared to "Gippi". The weekend collections will reportedly decide the fate of both the movies.

Kinda bad timing as well.
Loads going on in terms of IPL.
There's also a lot of films running in theaters right now. Multiplex crowd would have been target, but they have too many options. Iron Man, Gatsby, Go Goa Gone, Ashiqui. Too much competition. Audiences are divided.

Though the trailers and everything are good, gippi is not a movie i would watch in the theaters... I'd rather watch it on tv or dvd. I guess other people have the same thought thats why it did poorly. Also lack of star value is another major factor

I guess there is also one factor which is missing - HIT MUSIC ! u see SOTY didn't have any star value as well, but it had hit music when helped people to flock in theatres.

in today's times, appreciation doesn't have any value. if ur movie is a hit or a flop. BOMBAY TALKIES has been washed away as well.

Not only hit music, SOTY was the typical college drama. People love that kinda stuff, mush, glam, etc etc.
The whole package.

Gippi is mini SOTY! So I dont think SOTY being a drama flick helped SOTY anyway
And SOTY was based in school not college ;p

Lack of buzz I hardly saw any promos of this movie and the ones I saw were not impressive at all. Before SOTY was released TV screens were full with its promos.

it doesn't matter SOTY was based on college or school, the factors that made SOTY a hit were clearly missing.

and this film could have easily become a hit if it was targetted in the right direction. means the film talked about only the girl's point of view of their adolescence concerns. IF it included boys as well I guess it would have got even great attention. i am a girl myself but i know that boys do a lot of mischief in their adolescence days, in school especially. thy are more wilder lol.

i m actually sad abt its failure
