Perhaps this is why DDLJ is so popular till date although I never thought it was great shakes. For once, the hero wasn't stealing his woman away from her family and running way or fighting them. He waited to take approval from her parents. That was new for action-infested 90s. It gave equal importance to the girl's character and her feelings.
This is what I've been saying all along. People today wouldn't find DDLJ an extraordinary film by any measure, but during the 90's it was quite the hatke film. You had not seen the leading man not bashing up the bad guys ever before. Simply put, you had not seen the hero not being the typical macho stud ever before. Infact DDLJ would be the first film to showcase the typical macho stud in a negative light, i,e, Kuljeet's character. He was your handsome jatt who could fight a hundred gundas and more, but was sort-of the villain here.
So yes, DDLJ was a trendsetter during it's times. That's why it's a classic.
@Topic - Completely agree even though it's biased (do I care?) SRK's leading ladies have never been just eye candies or supplementary characters. Most of his films have always given due credit to both the actress and her character. If nothing else, SRK has achieved this.
