Hit Che!

By Taran Adarsh, February 27, 2013 - 08:15 IST
The naysayers, or the prophets of doom, have been proven wrong yet again. KAI PO CHE, starring three relative newcomers, has notched a remarkable total in its opening weekend. You may find this hard to believe, but the Fri-to-Sun figures of KAI PO CHE [Rs 18.10 cr] are better than KAHAANI [Rs 13.83 cr], PAAN SINGH TOMAR [Rs 4.25 cr] and VICKY DONOR [Rs 7.40 cr], which were in the same space [unconventional films, all]. Now that's a tall achievement, isn't it?

What's heartening is that UTV believed in the film and gave it a fantabulous release. Additionally, look at UTV's confidence in KAI PO CHE: The film had its global premiere at Berlinale nine days prior to its release [on Wednesday], the critics who matter watched the film exactly a week in advance [on Friday], while UTV hosted a gala premiere for the crme de la crme of the entertainment industry in Mumbai five days before it hit the screens in India [on Monday]. Besides, the KAI PO CHE team promoted the film extensively on all platforms [television, radio, internet, print] in India and also in the international markets... As a matter of fact, UTV ensured that the film was 'visible' and talked about prior to its release everywhere.

Even the release strategy adopted by UTV for KAI PO CHE was most appropriate, targeting plexes and premium single screens in India. In the international arena, most films starring newcomers rarely get a theatrical release in major markets such as U.K. and U.S.A. [JAANE TU' YA JAANE NA and STUDENT OF THE YEAR are exceptions, but those films had Aamir Khan and Karan Johar, respectively backing the projects -- names that enjoy tremendous following in Overseas], but KAI PO CHE was released like any biggie there. The conviction or gamble, whatever you call it, has paid off and how!

The audience mandate was evident on Friday itself, when the morning shows concluded. KAI PO CHE is a rare film that's riding on glowing reviews and positive audience mandate, hence the business was bound to witness ample growth over the weekend. The day-wise growth in business, even at single screens, is proof that the film has worked big time. The rock-steady business on weekdays clearly indicates that the film has long legs. I am supremely confident that KAI PO CHE will continue to radiate in Weekend 2 as well.

The success of KAI PO CHE will spur film-makers and Studios to endorse movies starring newcomers, with content doing the talking. The success of KAI PO CHE will persuade film-makers to think beyond the stereotype. The success of KAI PO CHE will help introduce fresh, deserving talent at a time when almost all top actors have turned producers and there's genuine scarcity of new talent in the industry.

Do I hear KAI PO CHE producers Ronnie Screwvala and Siddharth Roy Kapur, director Abhishek Kapoor, writers Pubali Chaudhuri, Supratik Sen, Abhishek Kapoor and Chetan Bhagat, associate producer Manish Hariprasad, actors Rajkumar Yadav, Amit Sadh, Sushant Singh Rajput and Amrita Puri, UTV's core team of Shikha Kapur [marketing], Gaurav Verma [India distribution], Lokesh Dhar and Amrita Pandey [Overseas distribution] and everyone associated with the film scream with elation, 'kaipo che'?

PS: The success of VICKY DONOR and now KAI PO CHE also shatters the age-old myth that television actors cannot make it big in movies [Ayushmann Khurrana, Sushant and Amit started their careers in television].

* * * * *

The other release, ZILA GHAZIABAD, a multi-starrer, got eclipsed by the KAI PO CHE wave at plexes, although the film is maintaining quite well at single screens in the mass-dominated belt, especially in U.P

I went to watch this movie yesterday, and It was houseful!

It was visually superb!Nothing was not over dramatized(the earthquake and riots part), I liked the later part more...
All three actors performed their role perfectly...
Loved Ishaan-Ali's bonding and how Omi always supports Ish ...but the climax takes away all the points.
The songs were nicely picturised...
The BG score was the + that kept everyone engrossed, superb!
India won yesterday against Aus, and in movie too! hehe
I would like to watch it once more to sink in the feel of movie!
Special mention to Sushant's character, loved it! so easy going...He will go long way As I have seen him in Serial too, improvised exponentially...!

Box Office Review: Kai Po Che!

22nd February 2013 saw the release of the much-awaited Kai Po Che, which is based on Chetan Bhagat's novel The 3 Mistakes of My Life (2008) in 1000 screens across the country.

22nd February 2013 saw the release of the much-awaited Kai Po Che, which is based on Chetan Bhagat's novel The 3 Mistakes of My Life (2008) in 1000 screens across the country. Starring popular television actors Sushant Singh Rajput(last seen in Pavitra Rishta) and Amit Sadh (of Kyun Hota Hai Pyarr fame) alongside Raj Kumar Yadav, the movie met all expectations as it set the cash registers ringing with an average occupancy of 65%.

Despite having a lukewarm response on single screens, the film managed to gather Rs. 4.50 crores on the opening day itself. As expected, the collection went up on Saturday to Rs. 6.25 crores. The movie was made on a budget of Rs. 12 crores, and it already managed to recover Rs. 10.75 crores in just two days. Another Rs. 7.35 crores were added as the collection for Sunday. It left it's competitor Zilla Ghaziabad, which released on the same day, far behind as the latter managed to gather only Rs. 10.75 crores on the first three days.

Kai Po Che got a positive response in the international market as well as it collected Rs. 75.85 lakhs in the US on the opening day, Rs. 52.06 lakhs in the UK for two days and Rs. 1.35 crores in the UAE on the first three days.

Seems like the Box Office has finally warmed up for 2013. With Ram Gopal Verma's The Attacks Of 26/11 and the John Abraham-Chitrangda Singh-Prachi Desai starrer I, Me Aur Main releasing this Friday, we expect that movie-goers will have plenty to choose from on the upcoming weekend as well.

Kai Po Che

It's one of those rare Hindi films where you feel like you got the money's worth. I have read 3 mistakes of my life about 4 years ago and I vividly remember book having a mediocre story. However, Abhishek kapoor's movie Kai Po Che is far from that. It's a very humane story dealing with sensitive issues that India shies away to talk about. As you have known from the promos, the film is mostly about three young friends who despite all the tumultuous changes happening in society around them strives to be together and form a bond to remain brothers for life. Yet, the characters go through upheavals because of the issues that happened in Gujarat such as earthquake, Hindu-Muslim communal riots and India winning test series. It's one of those poignant journeys that you want to be part of and hope for friends like that in one's life. You feel like laughing with them, cheering for their successes and then have a deep-felt sadness for their personal losses. I personally like the way Abhishek Kapoor did not dwelt deep into these religious issues and made it more into background narrative. I love how much the director has focused on giving the real feel of the rural India and you actually feel like this is the India you know and you have grown up into. I also love how much detailing went through each character and how simple they were compare to the branded lower middle class Indians we see in cinema these days. Abhishek Kapoor has truly shined through this film and you can actually see that he did spent four years making this film.

Moving on to the performances, I loved each one of them. It's one of those films, where you feel like these actors are born to play these parts. Although I love Ishaan and govind, I felt a soft corner for Omi because he is one those friends who will do anything for you yet he is so stupid, misguided that you just want to take him under your wings. Each one of the actor deserves applause and I hope to see all of them shine in their future films.

Amit Trivedi music and the background score is a huge plus point for this film. The music brought the feel of Gujarat, India and tale of friendship. Also, cinematographer has beautifully captured the locales and filmed it according to the story. Only drawback for this film is that it falters in the second half and pace of the film drops for a little. I also felt that end was little abrupt. Overall, a heartwarming story that needs to be watched..
