Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network Kai Po Che grossed around 15.75 crore nett over its first weeeknd. The film had a pretty good start in metros on Friday and consolidated in these areas on Saturday and Sunday. Business outside the metros did pick up but as start was low the overall business also remained low. The approx breakdowns were 3.75 crore nett on Friday, 5.50 crore nett on Saturday and 6.50 crore nett on Sunday. The weekend business of the film was similar to another non cast film ABCD - Anybody Can Dance released a few weeks back and the trend was also the same with Mumbai and South faring better but not quite to the extent of that film which was very lop sided. | |
The film grossed around 7.25 crore nett in Mumbai, 3.15 crore nett in Delhi/UP, 1.10 crore nett in East Punjab and 1.20 crore nett in Mysore |

The two films that released last Friday saw diverse response at the box office over the weekend. Kai Po Che, which released at limited theatres wooed the audience and garnered approximately Rs. 15 crore plus over the weekend. Whereas, the other releaseZila Ghaziabad wrapped its three-day collections at Rs. 9 crore NBOC. Distributors believe that it's Kai Po Che all the way for the week as well. With the marvellous word of mouth publicity and high on content, the film will undoubtedly rule the ticket windows.
In Mumbai, Rajesh Thadani of Multimedia Combines said that, "The all India collections of Kai Po Che was Rs. 15.75 crore and in Mumbai the film garnered Rs. 7.25 crore over the weekend; whereas Zila Ghaziabad collected Rs. 9 crore all India and Rs. 2.5 crore in Mumbai. Kai Po Che is receiving extremely positive response from the audience and the film will have a spectacular week ahead as well."
Brijesh Tandon of HK Tandon and Company from Delhi added that, "Kai Po Che rang in Rs. 3.5 to Rs.4 crore over the three days weekend and Zila Ghaziabad also saw a similar fate with wrapping its weekend at Rs. 3.5 crore. Kai Po Che has been allotted more shows at the multiplexes from today as the film has gotten exceptional response from the audience."
In East Punjab, Surendra Saluja of Lakshya Movies said that, "Zila Ghaziabad is a very badly executed film, it managed to collect Rs. 75 lakh over the weekend. It's Kai Po Che, which is ruling the ticket windows, and no doubt is a beautifully crafted film. Kai Po Che collected Rs. 1.3 crore here in East Punjab during the weekend."
Gaurav Gaur of O'Real Imagination from Rajasthan confirms that, "Kai Po Che collected Rs. 19 lakh, Rs. 25 lakh and Rs. 28 lakh respectively on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Zila Ghaziabad on the other hand collected Rs. 68 lakh during the three days; Friday Rs. 25 lakh, Saturday Rs. 20 lakh and Sunday Rs. 23 lakh."
In West Bengal, Debashish Dey of Aum Moviez added that, "Kai Po Che collected Rs 1.12 crore in West Bengal and Zila Ghaziabad collected Rs. 90 lakh. UTV's Kai Po Cheis a youth centric film and is gaining momentum even during the week day shows."
In CP, Sarang Chandak of Shri Rang Films revealed that, "Zila Ghaziabad is a massy film but still the film failed to enthral the audience. The film managed to collect Rs. 60 lakh during the weekend. Kai Po Che which is a film made for the classes has shown no major drop in its Monday collections. The film garnered Rs. 75 lakh during the weekend and the week is looking spectacular as well.'
"We have limited multiplexes here in Bihar and Kai Po Chebeing a multiplex film collected Rs. 20 lakh over the weekend. We had expectations from Zila Ghaziabad but the film collected a mere Rs. 50 lakh. Zila Ghaziabad ka report bohot kharab hai", added Rakesh Singh of Maa Sona Films from Bihar.
It was predicted in this column last week that Abhishek Kapoor's Kai Po Che! would take an opening in the range of 40%-50% and at select multiplexes boast of occupancy which could be much higher. Well, this is exactly how box office behaved as well with the opening day around the 50% mark at an average and much better occupancy at premium properties. While majority of 'moolah' (expectedly) came from A centres and their multiplexes, the response at single screens wasn't anywhere close. This wasn't an area of concern for the makers though since the film opened well with the target audience.

The film saw some very good critical acclaim coming its way, which was again on the expected lines. Of course to term it as a classic was akin to taking things a little too far but as a standalone product, Kai Po Che! carries enough merits to find good audience for itself. This is what happened as after enjoying a good opening day, it went on to notch around 18 crores at the box office, hence turning out to be a safe outing. For UTV in particular, the month of February has turned out to be great since just before Kai Po Che!, another film with minimal known credentials, ABCD – Any Body Can Dance, has turned out to be a clean hit already.
Will Kai Po Che! too find a hit tag for itself? Well, for that one would have to wait to see how the second weekend also performs. There is competition in the form of two more multiplex friendly films (The Attacks of 26/11, I Me Aur Main). Moreover, at its core, Kai Po Che! is niche after all which means the target audience base has to be nurtured further over a period of time. Still, leaving the moolah factor arrives, the fact that films featuring predominantly new faces (after Vicky Donor, Ishaqzaade, ABCD) working commercially as well is a good sign indeed for Bollywood.
What hasn't exactly been a good sign though is the fact that Zila Ghaziabad didn't quite find many things favourable going it's way. After a delay, there was lack of marketing and promotional effort that pulled it down as it approached closer to release. It was expected though that at single screens in the North belt the film would find an audience. That was the case as well and this Anand Kumar directed film did end up collecting around 10 crores by the time the first weekend came to a close.
Zila Ghaziabad Movie Poster
Though this is still a decent number considering the fact that it has been quite some time since a Vivek Oberoi starrer has managed such collections, one also has to acknowledge Sanjay Dutt's presence in the enterprise. Moreover with Arshad Warsi throwing his weight around, at least the film succeeded in not turning out to be a washout. It has to be seen though if the film manages to hang on at the single screens at least and breakeven at least as this multistarrer is a costly affair. Since the start isn't good, Zila Ghaziabad would have to cover a much greater distance for survival.

Abhishek Kapoor's Kai Po Che has collected Rs 16 crores in it's first weekend at the box office. The film opened well on Friday (Rs 3.75 cr net), picked up by around 45% on Saturday (5.5 cr net) and fared exceedingly well on Sunday (Rs 6.75 – 7 cr) to take it's weekend total to 16 cr+
Kai Po Che, based on Chetan Bhagat's popular novel 'The 3 Mistakes Of My Life' is a massive hit with the big city audience, especially in territories where 'class' films tend to do well – more than 85% of business has come from Delhi, Mumbai, Mysore, West Bengal and East Punjab.
The film has remained steady on Monday and should put up good numbers over the weekdays. With I Me Aur Main and the keenly awaited 'The Attacks Of 26/11' scheduled to release this weekend, it remains to be seen if Kai Po Che can go from strength-to-strength like Vicky Donor, Kahaani and OMG! Oh My God.
Kai Po Che Weekend Collections
The story of three friends over decade. Yes, you have heard that one before, but Kai Po Che has a charm all its own.
RATING: 7.5/10
QUICK TAKE: Abhishek Kapoor elicits some great performances from an unheralded cast and packages it slickly into an enthralling and endearing two hours
When I first read 'The Three Mistakes of My Life' I had this nagging feeling that this was a story written with a film in mind. While to be fair to Chetan Bhagat he may not have consciously done so, there was that subconsciously Bollywoodish template to this story of three friends from Ahmedabad and their world of dreams and ambitions tied together by a common thread – the national obsession of cricket.
Bhagat would have been delighted that the job of adapting it to the big screen in the form of 'Kai Po Che' fell to Abhishek Kapoor, he who already has showcased the idea of male bonding over a shared obsession very convincingly and classily in 'Rock On!!'. While thematically similar, the stories differ a lot in their setting and tone – Rock On was an urbane tale; Kai Po Che is kept firmly rooted to the bylanes of Ahmedabad. The adaption of Bhagat's book (Bhagat himself was part of the team that wrote the script along with Kapoor, Pubali Chaudhuri and Supratik Sen) does away with the more elaborate settings in the book and anchors the story in Ahmedabad and while superbly using the narrative drive and tension that both cricket and the two seismic events in Gujarat (one, rather literally seismic – the quake of 2001 and the other being the Godhra train burning incident and the subsequent riots) provide in Bhagat's story actually goes ahead and enhances it like only the visual grammar of a film can.
The film pays a lot of attention to subtlety and there are scenes that quietly move the narrative arc forward with things that are happening in the background almost unnoticed – a scene within a scene, if you will – yet having a big impact on the story later. Take for example, when Omi (Amit Sadh), Ishaan (Suahant Singh Rajput) and Govind (Raj Kumar Yadav) go to visit the house of 10 year old Ali, a cricket talent Ishaan spotted on the playground and wants to coach, Omi is clearly uncomfortable having the Roohafza he is offered. But you'd have to look closely because this is happening as Ishaan tries to convince Ali's dad to send his son under his tutelage.
The story opens with a now familiar style (if you have seen 3 Idiots and Rock On) of showing the friends in the present day and then quickly cutting off to a flashback to tell the tale of how they got here. Govind is an ambitious young business minded man who wants to open a sporting goods store and also use it to facilitate a cricket coaching academy that his childhood friend Ishaan (who has been a champion district level cricketer but gets constantly bickered at by his father who wants him to do something worthwhile) wants to open. They approach Ishaan's dad for some seed money, but being rejected finally secure some funding and a location for the shop and academy from Omi's uncle who is the part of a political party. But their dreams are soon thrust into disarray as first the quake strikes and then the riots. To make matters worse, Govind falls in love with Ishaan's sister Vidya (Amrita Puri).
Of the three friends, who seem to share some genuine moments on screen (every little gesture and non verbal cue makes a difference and that makes Kai Po Che such a refreshing watch), Sushant's performance is the standout and the breakthrough – embodying every inch the all heart character that Ishaan is. For those of you who have seen him in the Television soap operas, there's no way you've never wondered that this boy deserves a bigger screen. You will find yourself rooting for him in no time as you are warmly engulfed by the lovely music and carefully constructed scenes.
But the greatest triumph of Kai Po Che is how it masterfully yet understatedly uses cricket as a narrative weapon. The epic India-Australia test at Eden Gardens in 2001 (yes THAT test where VVS got 281) features at a crucial juncture not as an aside to the narrative but thoroughly enmeshed in it. Even the club and the street games are beautifully rendered highlighting how rarely filmmakers in India have ignored the life the game brings to every story an Indian has to tell, too often they fall into the trap of using it just as an accessory.
The earnestness of the cast and the honesty of the film in not trying to be too ambitious or complex makes Kai Po Che work superbly even though broadly speaking it is a story you have kind of seen earlier. You can largely thank Abhishek Kapoor's deft direction and the chemistry among the cast for that.
