As a child, I was always told that Hindus and Sikhs are followers of TWO, TOTALLY DIFFERENT faiths. But in Bollywood, I see Sardars doing the Laxmi pooja, and Hindus going to Gurudwaras. I am really confused. Is this a normal thing between the two communities, or is this just a director's fantasy to integrate the two?

No they weren't.. how can you be a Hindu when you do not believe in the main principles of it? Sikhism started because our Guru's did NOT believe in 330 million gods and also to protect the minorities which were Hindus in those days, God is only one for Sikhs and not for Hindus. And you're totally wrong there my dear, surnames weren't given based on religion.. they were given based on cast. For example there are so many Muslims with the same surnames as Sikhs because they have the same cast. Jatts in Pakistan have the same surnames as the Jatts in India but not the same religion!

because many are mixed like in my parivaar we have both sikh punjabi and hindu punjabi so we goto guruwara and the temple. but some who are strict will go to one place but majority goto both. In india esp both adapt each others religions as well esp amongst punjabis. like Akshay is hindu punjabi was born in amritsar, punjab which is heavly sikh populated so prob went to guruwara as well as temple, also may have relatives who are sikhs too. Also, sikhs came outta hindus many converted to sikhism. Guru Gobind Singh had the paanch pyare who were hindus became sikhs. In india, some parents made one kid a sikh and other hindu (so this are blood brothers) but one practiced one religion the other another. This is main reason. Plus, punjabis sikh or hindu marriages intermixed so practice both.
