No they weren't.. how can you be a Hindu when you do not believe in the main principles of it? Sikhism started because our Guru's did NOT believe in 330 million gods and also to protect the minorities which were Hindus in those days, God is only one for Sikhs and not for Hindus. Yes the pagdi is worn but it's worn in a different way, it's like saying people from Afghanistan wear the same pagdi as the Sikhs in India! And you're totally wrong there my dear, surnames weren't given based on religion.. they were given based on cast. For example there are so many Muslims with the same surnames as Sikhs because they have the same cast. Jatts in Pakistan have the same surnames as the Jatts in India but not the same religion!
😆... Sikh gurus rejected multiple Gods and the caste system, so what?, thousands of Hindu gurus/philosophers/acestics/mystics rejected multiple gods and caste system too, predating the Sikh gurus by centuries and milleniums, so how do Sikhs differ in this regard?... is it the attire?, well even Hindus don't wear the same attire, even Hindu marriages differ depending on which part you're from. 😆... so in what way are Sikhs radically distinct from Hindus?
