Are Blockbusters too easy today?

We're past the half way mark and this year has already seen 3 Blockbusters and another 100 Cr grosser.

1) Rowdy Rathore - Blockbuster
2) Agneepath - Blockbuster
3) Kahaani - Blockbuster

4) Housefull 2 - 100 Cr+ Superhit

Cocktail is on its way to BB status. Bol Bachchan will finish close to a 100 cr.
And we have Biggies like Ek tha Tiger, YRF-SRK, Son of Sardar, Joker, Talaash, Khiladi 786 etc still waiting to happen. I won't be suprised if we get 10 Blockbusters this year.

Last year we had 5 100 Cr grossers and 5 Blockbusters.

With rising ticket prices, multiple shows, new multiplexes going up every day getting a Blockbuster status isn't what it used to be. There was a time when films had to run for 15-20 weeks to get a HIT tag. A films quality decided the outcome. Today half a films gross is done in the first weekend itself.

Between

1970-1979 there were 12 Blockbusters

1980-1989 there were 9 Blockbuster

1990-1999 there were 8 Blockbusters

2000-2005 There were 4 Blockbusters. Right on par with the 90's.

2006-2009 The end of the Single screen. Sky high ticket prices. 11 Blockbusters.

Its too easy to score a blockbuster today. They should raise the bar higher before declaring a film like Ready a blockbuster. It doesn't deserve to be on the same level as the old classics that had to work to get that status.

Just curious to know, which time period was it when a film had to run for 15-20 weeks to get Hit tag? :)

I believe in the 60's and 70's if a film didn't cross silver jublie, it wasn't considered a hit. Silver Jubilee means 25 weeks.

80's and 90's too hit films used to run for 15 weeks easily.

Blockbusters are way too easy today.

Old Blockbusters have an ROI (Return on Investment ) of atleast 250%. Which means they were made for 1 Cr and netted 2.5 Cr.
Similarly an 80 Cr film like Agneepath should net 200 Cr (250% ROI) before being declared a blockbuster, instead of 130.

Before
Blockbuster = Silver Jublee, Golden Jublee
Now
Blockbuster = Two weeks Jublee plus 100 crores
So the bottom line is...these days ... Blockbuster = Piece of cake.

These days even I can predict which film will be a blockbuster as soon as the cast is finalized.
