@Heisenberg: Wha? The 'real' side of India? I don't remember anybody saying slums or poverty didn't exist. Phoren film-makers have been showing 'slum et al' for decades to represent India before SM happened. Is that the only thing we got? Gotta love these supercliched arguments of poverty-peddlers. How are slums any different in, say, Egypt or China? Boo huh!

To top it off, SM wasn't even an "Indian movie" technically. And the story was dramatic, kitschy and un-realistic to say the LEAST.

Read my post carefully, I never said slums is "the" real side of India, but it's a reality, so instead of being ashamed about it, just accept it... and you said it yourself, before SM, many films were based in the slums, and had poverty as a backfrop, then how comes only SM manage to become such a big hit?... why blame westerners, the film itself an adaptation of a popular Indian novel, written by an Indian author.

The slums are not any different to other third world countries, have you actually ever watched any foreign movies?...

It just so happened that slumdog Millionaire showed the slums in India. The story was such. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a British film that highlights positives in India. The story is such. It may not be as big as Slumdog, but it is popular.

I don't know why we make a hue and cry because Slumdog Millionaire highlighted a negative aspect of India.

Almost every movie shot in Brazil show Rocinha favela. District 9's plot was totally built on the slums in South Africa. We are the only country that is hypersensitive about foreigners showing our poverty.

It was the quintessential Bollywood plot, it had everything that a typical Bollywood film has... what is the main gripe, poverty or the fact that it was made by a westerner?

@ANGEL LIKE DEVIL: Precisely. Tis all in the language. Which is why Hollywood is so popular. Does NOT, then, mean that its the best or the be-all of the cinematic universe.
Babes..
#1 --- Who ever said Hollywood's the best now? ..yes, it does have the highest name in the world, because, look at the reality - it's productions are mind-blowing..I dare say, every aspect of Hollywood's better than Bollywood. That being said, I enjoy bollywood too... it's our culture, it's different I love it. But hollywood produces so much variety, produces gazillion movies that send a message to us viewers...and talk about some movie's storylines, picturization, screenplay, casting, settings, costume designing, background score... ⭐️ ..
I can compare Hollywood with Bollywood, Korean, Tollywood movies(those are the only ones I watch), and hollywood's definately the best.. although, I like each for my own reasons. (inspite of Bollywood being the largest producer of movies in the world)
#2 --- Have you watched all films produced by Japanese, Korean, Russian, German, French, Arabic, Bengali, Telugu, Malayalam film industries? What makes you say Hollywood isnt the best? plus.. is there any world organisation that ranks Hollywood #1 ???
Stop crying about why Hollywood's "mainstream"... it is mainstream because people everywhere in the world enjoy it, what gives you the authority to say that Hollywood shouldnt be mainstream while millions are considering it to be?? and besides, there's no world organisation making giving Hollywood a number one slot.
some people like Bollywood more than Hollywood, Korean more than Hollywood, Tollywood better than Holly... in the end, it's one's own personal choice. Just watch movies and have fun.. why compare :/

because Hollywood is miles a head of indian cinema

technology

editing cutting

screenplays

production value

acting ability

you name it,i do agree with u we dont need to get approval from the west but u have to see your short coming ,and start to give hardworking talented youngsters the chance to prove their abilities.

i am sick of this tsunami of star children getting VIP treatment and they still have the guts to say we do also have to struggle 😡

and u wonder why the west look down on us

its th same like th south indian actors craving for BW approval bcoz BW has national appeal.

Bollywood's doing it's thing. When it gets a praise from Hollywood... it's obviously shocked and is on cloud nine, because, lets face it - the quality of Hollywood in every sense is super-high-er than Bollywood..
But, bollywood SURE isnt trying to get an approval - look at all the latest hits and recently made movies?

LOL 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆 at blue. never thought of it in tht angle.

Well we may be poor but our ego reaches the moon 😆 The way westerners/western countries are sometimes represented in Bollywood movies is not exactly positive! Wonder why the foreigners don't make a hue and cry about it 😛

Going back to the question...Hollywood is mainstream...and has the biggest market share because movies are made in English...hence people go ga ga. That's all.
