The delay for Talaash is complex and cannot be attributed to simplistic reasons (like he's afraid of Kahani or Rowdy Rathore or buzz etc.!). Some points I think which came into play in this decision:
- He has taken up more than he can handle. 3 films (that too offbeat) and a TV show (massive one!).
- The 3 productions' were already getting delayed as he was busy with Ghajini and 3I. So he first took break to complete and release them.
- In between some family reasons like Kiran's miscarriage, his father's demise, his brother's recovery, his nephew's marriage and latest - birth of his newborn son Azad also kept him busy from time to time and he kept taking days and months off from his projects to focus on family. [Remember he said in December that he was spending all time with Azad these days?]
- The TV show which he's doing is indeed his most ambitious project. He's trying to combine different formats in one show (chat show, documentary, travelling around India himself, doing research in even small towns along with his team, shooting in studios, shooting on real locations, sitting with Prasoon Joshi to write proper couplets and introduction for each episode, spending time with Ram Sampath and Sukhwinder in composing of theme song for the show, cutting different promos for each episode etc.). He's tying up with even channels like Aaj Tak and Doordarshan for yet another chat/discussion show which will air after each episode of his show (featuring him in discussion with experts on the issue which a particular episode addresses!). He's getting it dubbed in 8-10 different regional languages and English so that it reaches maximum people and has also taken up all channels under STAR network.
- This TV show is AKP's first foray into television. Undoubtedly he has to be more nervous about it. He has to avoid comparisons with other shows (documentaries or docu-dramas on news channels as well as DD), ensure all multiple formats he's attempting come across seamlessly without the show looking like a collage or haphazard mish-mash!
- Because so many different TV channels and 3 different networks (each of them rivals and the market leaders in India) are coming together for ONE TV show, he has to concentrate on it. He cannot keep delaying it or fit in anytime like a movie. TV channels have to reshuffle their schedules, change timings of existing shows, accommodate new shows etc. A slight change, means major overhaul in schedule of a TV channel! And here not only a dozen channels of STAR network are involved but also 2 more TV channels!
- STAR usually unveils their new show at Star Parivaar Awards their annual event. But they could not talk about this show (despite this being their biggest property!) all due to Aamir's delays and uncertainty on when they should launch this show and how they would accommodate this show with their hundreds of other shows across all channels!
- The TV show somehow kept getting delayed either when Aamir took time to release and market Dhobi Ghat or Delhi Belly or when he took time to spend with family or when he took time off to shoot for Talaash side by side.
- The TV show was badly harmed when its sets were completely destroyed due to fire. He was definitely affected by it (personally, professionally as well as financially!) , and had to either re-shoot episodes, move the show to other studios and also look into reconstruction of the destroyed sets. It delayed the show further!
- There's no point in doing a TV show when there are less chances of it being watched! They know very well that IPL season has India glued to TV watching cricket and even favorite daily soaps are forgotten! News channels also keep reporting and dissecting IPL matches all day. There's no way his show could have got proper attention during IPL.
- Aamir himself had no problems with launching his show in IPL. But all TV networks associated with it made it clear they won't take any chances during IPL. So Aamir's show got delayed instead! Thanks to Aamir's previous delays, STAR (probably uncertain about his yes or no) started some new daily serials and is now finding it very hard to get a slot for Aamir's show.
- Aamir keeps insisting this show is for real people and Indians and causes close to his heart. The purpose of this show would've been defeated if it had come around the same time as his film!
- Half of the people would've accused him of milking social causes to get limelight for film and other half would have developed wrong expectations about Talaash, hoping that even his film might have some message like his TV show and past films! [Whereas Talaash is an entertainer and AK's character in it is far from being a saint or crusader of social causes! ]
- In my personal opinion, AK himself was never sure about how he'd like his TV show to be. He kept adding and deducting things from it, and couldn't fit in a rigid format. He himself didn't realise how big his show had ended up becoming [heard there are also going to be poetry recitals by Prasoon Joshi in it and rock bands playing at end of each episode].
- Every project kept interfering with the other. He ended up giving both Eid and Christmas slots to Salman and Republic Day to Hrithik! I feel even the 30 November slot may not be fixed and may be totally subject to change as it is neither a holiday or vacation period, plus the film is clashing with Race 2 and is sandwiched between YRF-SRK film as well as the major biggie Dabangg 2 (which is also with a hero playing cop!).
- Being this one-thing-at-a-time person that he is, he would no way have managed to promote his TV show and film at the same time. [And I also think it is against his principles to promote two radically different projects at same time, he's very particular about audiences' psyche!]
- Whether he admits or not, but every article has the same line about Talaash being his next release post the humongous 3 Idiots! He's obviously under pressure to perform both at box office and in terms of appeal/quality! His past benchmark 3 Idiots is too high (with the film's popularity continuing till date among fans and even celebrities around the world, record DVD sales, record TV ratings, record fans online, breaking box office records even after late release in countries like China or Hong Kong where no one cares about Bollywood films that much!). And it's obviously haunting him!
He can of course, not replicate the same success with a dark film like Talaash but he can't afford to lag or do ''just okay'' either! After all he was the first one to start this 100 crore and 200 crore mania and his name gets associated with ''quality'' or films with ''message''!
Talaash does not have mass appeal of either a Ghajini or 3 Idiots nor does it have message/social issue base like RDB or TZP. It's probably his darkest film (content wise) post the 2000s decade movies. He's keeps insisting it's an entertainer but from its reports and teaser anyone can guess it's not a conventional entertainer like his previous films or kind of films that work these days at box office.
He first reportedly spent time on himself sitting at the edit of Talaash and re-shooting climax scene (which is the high point of this film). Now he wants to fully concentrate on its marketing if he has to find ways to make it work and keep up with competition.
TV show and all the high stakes associated with it are interfering with the film.
Currently, he's neck deep into editing of the TV show (after spending time travelling and shooting around India for it earlier, and editing Talaash even before that!).
- One thing I am confused about is why he signed D3!! If he's already so caught up with TV show and Talaash and is worried about competition plus his own reputation, then why sign D3 and busy yourself with another responsibility of training and body-building for the film?!
- YET ANOTHER THING which he's doing is working on a new production which brings all Hussains together! Mansoor, himself, Nuzhat, Kiran and probably Imran also! He's co-writing it and is reportedly directing it too. [There are reports from trusted trade journals that he's to direct and write a film soon as well as produce it under AKP]
- He's ALSO been looking for and trying to crack deals for some complex where he and Kiran can start a cultural centre and an academy for aspiring filmmakers. [He's been obsessed with this idea since 2007! Reportedly looking for right locations!]
Other factors are just minor contributors, like too many suspense thrillers coming in same months or too many big films in one month, overdose of Bebo films in recent months etc.! These could have influenced but are not major factors in any way.
In conclusion, this man has (curiously, oddly, strangely!) taken up way more than he can actually handle! Unlike other stars he does not also delegate all responsibilities to others and has to revise or examine each detail himself before giving a final go ahead. In attempt to give 100% to each project and live up to his reputation and past high standards expected from him, he's ended up delaying all projects!
Films can be delayed because they have to come on one date. But TV show can't be delayed more due to the amount of stakes and scale of logistics which have to be worked out!
[Talaash could come in 2013 I guess. November 30, seems like another one of those dates they conveniently threw out in media. Dhoom 3? God knows what will be its fate. He obviously can't juggle shooting for D3 and Talaash promotions at the same time. Main work on Dhoom 3 would start only after he is done with TV show and Talaash once and for all. Raju Hirani film might either not happen at all or might be delayed even more than Dhoom 3, because he obviously cannot shoot for Raju's film simultaneously in Dhoom type look - nor is it possible that he doesn't take a break to relax after he's finally done with TV show and Talaash or after D3! Plus there's also the Hussains' film which is AKP's dream project! I can't see where & how the Raju Hirani film will figure in all this! ]
Fans, haters and media are taking it lightly and making it a joke, but in reality he's had to face a lot liabilities professionally and financially and embarrassment in front of all people he's answerable to - be it STAR, YRF, Excel, Reliance etc., people associated with all his projects, distributors etc. and last but not the least, his fans & audience who even he knows are exasperated to no ends by his breaks and delays!
It's a sad and trying time for him. Wonder how he'll manage to get everything on track! All plans gone haywire, particularly due to over-enthusiasm over TV show!
