When fame's a liability
Feb 25, 2012
Shobhaa De.

Don't worry. I am not going to launch into the "Saif Ali Khan is a Nawab. He's a good boy. I have known him and his highly refined family for three decades. Rinku has raised her kids so well. Saif could never have done this" spiel. Yes, he could. And he may have. Did he? The point is not about Saif's illustrious lineage. It is not about class. Or breeding. Or education. It is simply about this: Did Saif do it? Did he really assault a man in public at one of Mumbai's fanciest, priciest restaurants? Can it be proved that Saif was acting in self-defence as he claims? Was the attack unprovoked? Who hit whom first? Can that be established? Were there witnesses? Will they talk? Should we give Saif the benefit of the doubt and let the law take its own course?

Let's be perfectly honest, none of this is important. Saif's public trial has already begun. Nobody is interested in facts. At this point, there is a feeding frenzy on and unless something bigger and juicier erupts, Saif will continue to hog the headlines and be "judged" by hungry journos competing for scoops. That's how celeb brawls are covered across the world. Deal with it.
Saif is no stranger to skirmishes with the law. Yes, he does have a history of violent public conduct. He can be astonishingly arrogant. And his fists do talk. That still does not mean he is guilty this time. Celebrities do have it tough. They really aren't like you and me — they are famous! Dizzyingly so. Often, that fishbowl existence leads to erratic, irrational behaviour.
Saif obviously cracked under pressure that fateful night and lost it. And possibly, he let fly. It can happen. No amount of rationalising or deconstructing his celeb status can condone or justify an assault — if an assault did take place. The scenario isn't pretty. And it isn't loaded in Saif's favour, either. Iqbal Sharma, the person accusing the actor of breaking his nose, is an influential, well-connected man with powerful friends in high places. Who knows what exactly happened? It could have been something perfectly trivial but as the evening got into fifth gear, tempers may have risen… and the rest is now a police chargesheet.
Bar brawls take place all the time. If the people involved are sensible and, more importantly, sober, they settle the issue on the spot, shake hands and get on with their lives. Since that did not happen with Iqbal and Saif, the entire drama will be played out over and over again, eclipsing all other news. Too bad. That's the flip side of celebrityhood. Had the unfortunate incident taken place between two unknown parties at the same venue, would anybody have cared?
Saif has a lot to lose if the case goes against him (seven years in the clink). Iqbal Sharma has shot into the limelight overnight by claiming to be the victim. It has become an ego issue ("I will not accept Saif's apology"). Iqbal's wife Tareena and Saif's girlfriend Kareena, will get dragged into the mess, too. Tareena used to be a small-time starlet before her marriage. Now, after her prime-time debut, she may get lucrative offers from TV shows like Bigg Boss and hit the big time that has so far eluded her. Her name and foxy appearance have both registered. That's a huge bonus for someone who failed to make it. Kareena's status as "Bollywood Princess" and the future Begum of the Pataudi family, may remain unblemished if she steers clear of the scandal. Saif is the one who has the most to lose if things accelerate. His ambitious movie, Agent Vinod, may receive a boost at the box-office. But it is absurd to suggest Saif staged the assault story to garner publicity for the film. Nobody in his or her right mind would take such a risk. Saif has been hospitalised earlier and his health scare was serious enough to cause concern to his producers. If the current imbroglio backfires, Saif may pay a gigantic price for breaking someone's nose. This isn't going to be fun.
Celebrities are hugely vulnerable. Their fame does not insulate them. Far from it. Often, fame is the biggest liability they have to deal with. Being watched and judged 24x7 is the price movie stars pay for being successful. They neither deserve nor should they be idiotic enough to "demand" immunity. Most don't. The law makes no distinction. It is said that cops treat famous people with kid gloves and genuflect in their presence. Not true. If anything, cops go to the other extreme to prove how impartial they are by giving celebs a much harder time.
"Fixing" VIPs by humiliating them in public provides its own thrills. Fans can also turn celebrityhood on its head pretty ruthlessly. I have seen superstars (movie and cricket) being mocked, jeered, taunted and harassed for no apparent reason. I have watched celebs being subjected to rude comments and nasty potshots. Being that famous is awful! And there is really zero protection, zero privacy and zero sympathy. Celebrities qualify as soft targets. But that's not a story anybody is interested in. It's easier to slam, condemn and convict movie stars for "behaving badly in public". But what about us? Our behaviour? Often the naked envy and hostility on parade against the rich and famous reach unbearable levels. People may say, "Oh well… that's the price you pay." Is it?
It is entirely possible that Saif and friends were loud, noisy, boisterous and disruptive. Remember, they were celebrating in a glamorous five-star restaurant. How many times have we ourselves been over-exuberant in restaurants ourselves? Or put up with other people creating a mighty ruckus? Irritating? Totally. But irritating enough to trade insults and punches? That's obviously what Saif and Iqbal believed when they slugged it out.
Moral of the story: Better to be "Saif" and say sorry!

An even bigger liability is hubris and an overblown sense of ones own entitlement.

I'm sorry. This just made me laugh. 😆 They have so much in common, Iqbal and Saif.

Okay, going back to reading...

Both sides are wrong. Yes, it's a fancy restaurant and all that but if someone asks you to tone down a bit there is no harm in that. It DOES get irritating if one is talking loudly constantly. The other person is there for enjoyment too. I heard that Iqbal guy said something about Kareena? Which was wrong and probably it annoyed Saif bad. We'll never know who hit first. But to hit a senior old person is wrong in My personal opinion. Saif should be sorry about it and I think he is but it's a bad incident. It will stay in the limelight for awhile.

However, most importantly, to ME, all this looks like a promotional act for Agent Vinod. Like it TOTALLY does. And if its one, then bleeeh. It's pretty dumb.

Um... I can recall the news Police pooping Preity's birthday bash as the slum dwellers complained of loud music played in the party.

My question is -- Do they also complain when the loud music comes from a common man's home? Do the police take the case & take action with the same enthusiasm as they show for someone famous? 🤔

P.S. This is a genuine question; I'm not taking side of anyone. :)

Just to clarify, Saif didnt hit the senior citizen. That was Amrita Arora's husband Shakeel Ladakh.
A fact that's common on both sides. Even Sharma's side of the story confirms that Shakeel hit his father in law, not Saif.
Saif only got into a fight with Sharma.
Saif said in his statement that he's humiliated that people think he would hit a senior or elderly man.
Anyway, my two cents on this entire incidnet since I was absent from the forum when it happened.
Both sides are at fault.
Saif for snapping and getting into a fight, and Sharma for provoking him and instigating the entire thing.
This isnt a matter of a unequal dymanics. Its not that a powerful celebrity took advantage of some commoner and physically assaulted him because he dared to silence him.
There are equal power dynamics at play here.
This Sharma dude is a hot shot business man who has an affiliation with the South African government. He has powerful friends in high places, as Shoba De reiterated.
To me, this seems like a case of the clash of the egos. From Saif's party, the ego that why should they have to lower their voices in a restaurant in a private dining area, after all, we are celebrities.
On Sharma's side, how dare those people not listen to me, the NRI businessman who is a VIP in my own right, let me put these people into their proper place.
And I bring in the ego here, becuase BOTH sides could have just let it be. If I'm eating dinner and I'm disturbing others and I get a complaint, I would just be quieter. Even though I would be kinda pissed about having to keep my voice down coz I'm here ot have fun and I tend to get loud 😆
But also, on the flipside, if a party WAS being loud, rather than asking them to shut up, I'd just request the management to have my seated elsewhere.
So treat it as a fight. This was a fight, not an attack or solo assault. There's plenty of evidence that there was a heated argument between the two parties BEFORE things got uglier and more physical

Yes, they do. Atleast, in India I know. You need to take permission from the Law/Police in writing if you're having a late night party or even a religious event going on at night like say jagrata. Otherwise, you will be charged guilty. The only difference is we see articles on PZ and others bcoz they're bollywood celebrities. While common man's report doesn't get printed. Unless, perhaps we read Hindustan Times, then maybe we'll get an article? I don't see the need for printing about such things though.. be it about common man or celebrity. But then again, this is the media we're talking about. They like to make a moutain of a molehill.

I went by the articles that were posted here. So, if its Shakeel who hit then he's wrong.

Saif Ali Khan's allegation does not carry much 'weight': Police

By: Agencies Date: 2012-02-25 Place: Mumbai

Mumbai police probing Wednesday midnight brawl involving Saif Ali Khan on Friday said his counter complaint against South African businessman Iqbal Sharma does not carry "much weight" as the Bollywood actor had not suffered any injury.

Khan, according to investigators, has also not submitted any medical report to corroborate his claim that he too got injured during the fracas while acting in self-defence after being first hit by Sharma.

"While recording his statement, Saif repeatedly claimed that Sharma was the first to hit him. But he also mentioned he reacted to defend himself. That is enough for us to say he had punched Sharma," said an investigating officer at Colaba police station.

"Moreover, Saif's complaint against Sharma does not hold much weight as he had no injuries," the officer added.

The police have recorded the statement of witnesses at the Taj Mahal hotel who were either present during the brawl at 'Wasabi' restaurant or had rushed to the spot on hearing the commotion.

"We have recorded the statement of Taj's staff," said Vinod Sawant, senior inspector at the police station but refused to divulge the contents.

Sources said the hotel management has been asked to make available footage from CCTV cameras at the lobby, corridor and entrance to see if they had captured any shots of the fight.

Investigators, who had pinned their hopes on CCTV footage for evidence against Khan, were left disappointed when they were told yesterday that there were no video cameras installed in the area where the brawl had taken place.

Meanwhile, sources said Sharma has left for South Africa for some work after obtaining permission from the police.

Khan along with his two friends was on Wednesday arrested and released by police on bail after being charged with assaulting Indian origin South African national Sharma, who protested the noisy chatter of the actor and his friends at the Japanese restaurant.

The 41-year-old actor and his two friends Shakeel Ladak and Bilal Amrohi had been booked under sections 325 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intent) of IPC.
