Story: Sid and Sonali are jodi breakers, experts in getting squabbling couples to divorce. But can they form a jodi of their own?

Movie Review: In times when love is a multi-million industry, even the business of separation can be profitable employment. Lots of divorce lawyers would say that. But Sid is a divorce expert with a difference. He seduces the unfaithful and passes on the evidence. Even pehelwans from Haryana take his help to rid themselves of desperate wives. All this means a fab pay cheque in return. And his professional life only gets better when he hooks up with Sonali ( Bipasha Basu). Together they become top jodi breakers.

But Sid's own life is a mess. He is tired of paying alimony to his much-separated wife. And when she offers him a deal -- drive a wedge between a happy couple (Milind Soman and Dipannita Sharma) and he can get whatever he wants -- Sid falls for it. And that lands him in a bigger mess.

At first glance, Jodi Breakers has a lot going for it: an unusual and interesting lead pair, fabulous outdoor location (Greece, in this case) and foot-stomping music. But the movie is let down by a script that lacks fizz and connect. Director Ashwini Chaudhary's venture begins as a comedy but gradually morphs into romance and loses momentum in the second half. Not evenHelen can perk things up. Romance as remorse doesn't work here.

A couple of one-liners do work --- Omi Vaidya is called Nano because he is small, sweet and affordable -- but overall, the gags are sub-par. Vaidya gets to repeat his hilarious 'misreading' of a text as in Three Idiots with slight variations. But it is not half as funny. Elsewhere, Madhavan bursts into an operation theatre where a patient is about to undergo a heart operation and gets chatting with the doctors. It is meant to be zany but the scene ends up being asinine.

Jodi Breakers isn't entirely without merit though. Madhavan is earnest. And Bipasha looks stunning, especially in the scenes shot in Greece. The romantic scenes between the two have a coy intensity. Together they try to make the film better than it actually is. And the track named Bipasha has spunk and rhythm though Kunwara is likely to be the chartbuster. But it simply isn't enough.

Genre:Romance/Drama.
Story

Story: Jodi Breakers as the title suggests is an unusual love story of home breakers Sid (R Madhavan) and Sonali (Bipasha Basu). After parting ways with his wife on a bad note, Sid no longer believes in the institution of marriage. He bumps into Sonali at Nano's (Omi Vaidya) pub and soon Sonali becomes his partner in crime as a Jodi Breaker. The duo runs a pretty good business until they come across a deal which though lucrative turns their lives upside down. The clients involved here are Sid's ex-wife, Mark (Milind Soman), Maggie (Dipannita Sharma) and Mark's granny Modanna (Helen). How will their respective lives come on the track is the rest of the story.

Story Treatment: The strength of Jodi Breakers lies in its stupendous script. The pre-interval suspense element and twists leaves one enthralled. What add to the glee are some logical explanations of situations in the life of each character which justify their behavioral patterns. But, as the second half begins, screenplay gets extremely monotonous with some formulaic moments which lack novelty. Predictability further takes away the charm.

Star Cast: Fresh pairing on-screen seems to be the flavor of the season and it works out well for Jodi Breakers too as R Madhavan and Bipasha Basu is brilliant both in their own space and together. It's a delight to watch Maddy pouring his heart out to Bips in a beautifully shot scene and eventually aesthetically showcased love-making scene. Milind Soman initially uncomfortable gets into character with ease. Dipannita Sharma has improved with each film she has done so far. The actress is flawless in a character of abandoned yet strong-willed woman. Helen looks charming like always and plays her part well. Omi Vaidya repeats his 3 Idiots style which isn't funny anymore.

Direction: Director Ashwini Chaudhary has come a long way from Good Boy Bad Boy days as he springs up a surprise with crisp and edge of the seat drama. But, after a point of time his direction loses threads. The biggest drawback is- he dares to give a shabby look to Madhavan who is the spine of Jodi Breakers which may prove dismal for actors' fans across the globe. He also shows lack of compatibility with cinematographer who at most of the times isn't able to give the desired effect to the scene.

Music/ Dialogues/ Cinematography/Editing: Barring Bipasha song along with the romantic number, music does nothing but disrupts the flow of the story. Dialogues are pretty impressive and sync well with the sensitive theme on which story is based. Cinematographer takes away the essence from the emotional moments by focusing on long shots. Editing shocks at some points, like, for instance, music stops abruptly followed by dialogue delivery. Also, it is of no help in giving short cuts to a dragged screenplay.

3ups and downs: Mind-boggling performances, strong storyline and dialogues leave Jodi Breakers in the category of one-time watch films. Editing, cinematography and poor portrayal of second half in terms of direction and screenplay proves fatal for the film.

On the whole, Jodi Breakers falls flat in its intention to showcase a well-knitted plot. Watch out this one only for Maddy and Bips.

A unique concept that could have been a smooth ride but goes bumpy as the director added some not-so-required commercial elements. What could have been an excellent story on relationships was shattered because of the screenplay.

Story:

Sid (R. Madhavan), a divorcee himself facilitates divorces. He breaks painful and regretted relationships. He stumbles upon Sonali (Bipasha Basu) who thinks that divorces give you another chance of getting out of an unwanted relationship and finding your true soul-mate. What's next? The two join hands and become 'Jodi Breakers'.
Now, the expected twist is that the two will fall in love but there is another twist that for his personal interest Sid breaks a Jodi that was that was not was not meant to be separated.

Analysis:

Bipasha and Madhavan do make an unusual Jodi and the concept of the film too was unusual but the screenplay and some un-required elements added to it steal the essence and the movie remains to be just an average one.

Performances:

R Madhavan sure can act but he thinks of himself as Shah Rukh Khan, just a little bit of modesty added, and he can sure go a long way. Also, he has to do something with his loks and styling. Bipasha Basu was extremely sweet which did not really suit her. Though she looked extremely stylish, her performance was not much impactful. Omi Vaidya's track was not required and was detterent in the flow of the film. He was his usual self and at times irritating. Milind Soman and Dippannita Sharma portrayed class and act well. Mrinalini Sharma can't act. She was pretty irritating too. Helen was a pleasant addition though her baritone in some serious scene was a little amusing. Tarana as Madhavan's friend was good and the rest of the supporting cast was decent.

Technicalities:

As the basic script was good enough for the film to be called a good entertainer, the director lost it completely at the screenplay. Some scenes added were only seemed made-up and an afterthought. The cinematography made Greece look extremely beautiful. The music is quite hummable and soothing. Few dialogues and camera angles were interesting, but overall the film remains to be an average entertainer and just a one time watch.

Plus Points:

- Basic Plot
- Bips and Madhavan

Minus Points:

- Unrequired silly elements added

Final Word: A good movie that remains to be just a one-time watch.

Rating: 3/5
Cast: Madhavan, Bipasha Basu, Omi Vaidya, Dipannita Sharma

Jodi Breakers
By Taran Adarsh, 24 Feb 2012, 10:25 hrs IST
In the Indian societal setting, marriages mark a significant episode in an individual's life and Hindi movies have, very often, mirrored this fact. But the question is, can one snap off a relationship/marriage if it's not working? Is it easy for the respective individuals to start life afresh after a bad marriage? A lot of people I know are constantly under social and familial pressure to maintain the picture of contentment, even when they are not hitting off.

But times are changing rapidly. Marriage as an institution isn't sacrosanct anymore, with divorce becoming a commonality in urban India. Breaking free from a relationship calls for a celebration these days, with theme parties being organized to celebrate 'freedom'.

JODI BREAKERS narrates the story of a couple [R. Madhavan and Bipasha Basu, in this case] who help break up miserable, disgruntled couples. What makes JODI BREAKERS an innovative experience for Hindi moviegoers is the fact that a majority of our films are about people falling in love, but this one is about a pair that specializes in separation. It tells you to break the shackles and find a path of your own, after love goes wrong.

Wait! Does the plot ring a bell? Does JODI BREAKERS borrow inspiration from two films, as the rumor mills want us to believe, LAWS OF ATTRACTION [Pierce Brosnan, Julianne Moore] and the French film HEARTBREAKER [Romain Duris, Vanessa Paradis]? Not really, barring a similar-sounding title with the latter. In fact, a few random moments bring back memories of YRF's immensely likeable BAND BAAJA BAARAAT.

To put things in the right perspective, JODI BREAKERS is routine, clichd and formulaic, at least initially. Add lazy and unenergetic too. Director Ashwini Chaudhary doesn't get a grip of things, except in a couple of sequences. But the twist and turns in the post-interval portions are of an interesting variety [writer: Aakash Kaushik], with a major chunk of the second hour succeeding in making you erase whatever misgivings you may have had from the first hour.

Sid [R. Madhavan], a divorcee, realizes that happy marriages are a myth. He decides to become a break-up specialist on a rebound. He comes into contact with Sonali [Bipasha Basu] and the duo decides to become jodi breakers. But a major incident changes their lives and the duo decides to rectify the wrong they had committed.

JODI BREAKERS is a mixed bag, frankly. It's like watching two different films in those two hours. Let me explicate. The first half is largely dry and insipid and talks of jodi breakers. The succeeding half is exactly the reverse. It holds your attention since the characters change gears. The drama in the post-interval portions compensates for the blemishes that stare at you initially. The film concludes on an extremely pleasant note, which is what the viewer actually carries with him/her when he/she exits the auditorium.

Director Ashwini Chaudhary has the makings of a fine raconteur. This, one realized much earlier [DHOOP] and now, in JODI BREAKERS, Ashwini proves his credentials yet again. What's noteworthy is that he keeps the drama straightforward, unfussy and unpretentious. Besides, he makes his lead pair shine magnificently in the radiance of a well-tailored script.

The songs of JODI BREAKERS have already merited a place in popular charts and ace composers Salim-Sulaiman deserve credit for it. It's a damn good soundtrack, with several tracks staying fresh in your memory -- 'Kunwara', 'Darmiyaan' and 'Bipasha'. Even the song in the finale, which may give an impression that it's forced in the narrative, helps the story move forward. The cinematography [Arun Varma] is of standard, with the scenic locales of Greece and Goa giving the film that rich texture.

JODI BREAKERS holds your attention for a key reason. It doesn't fall prey to the conventional pairing. While he captured the hearts of cinegoers playing the conventional good boy in TANU WEDS MANU, Madhavan does a somersault in JODI BREAKERS. He underplays his character ingeniously and is incredible when he communicates his sentiments. Bipasha looks fresh, glamorous and most importantly, one hasn't watched her in the way you will get to see in JODI BREAKERS. Part of a rom-com for the first time, let me tell you, she is very good in the film. Besides, she's sure to send viewers into raptures in the 'Bipasha' track. The tender moments between Madhavan and Bipasha are tastefully handled.

Milind Soman and Dipannita Sharma are truly wonderful. Mrinalini Sharma portrays her part with gusto. Omi Vaidya provides some laughs, especially in the Baba Kamdev sequence. Tarana Raja is first-rate, while Helen adds sparkle to her part.

On the whole, JODI BREAKERS has an engrossing and smartly executed second half that tilts scales in its favor. The right dose of drama and romance, besides a trendy, harmonious musical score, only act as toppings.

Prasar Visions' Jodi Breakers (UA) is the story of Sid (R. Madhavan) and Sonali (Bipasha Basu), both of who are professional divorce facilitators. They make warring couples divorce one another more easily than usual. Sid has himself gone through a divorce and is sadder to have lost his car (taken by his wife) than his wife. Sid and Sonali meet one day and decide to work in partnership. Their partner in crime is Nainsukhlal Patel alias Nano (Omi Vaidya) who owns a bar where Sid and Sonali usually meet their clients.

One of their clients is Ira (Mrinalini Sharma). Sid takes Sonali to Greece, telling her that Ira's husband, Marc (Milind Soman), is romancing his girlfriend, Maggie (Dipannita Sharma Atwal), there. They even click pictures of Marc and Maggie romancing but rather than facilitating the divorce of Marc and Ira, they, for once, decide to reignite the love between Marc and Ira while getting Maggie out of Marc's life. They succeed by playing all sorts of evil games to prove to Marc that Maggie is a woman without morals.

It is then revealed that Ira was the actual outsider who was angling for Marc's wealth and that Marc and Maggie were married to one another. So, in effect, Sid and Sonali had facilitated the separation of a happily married couple and had gotten Ira close to Marc. It also turns out that Ira is the ex-wife of Sid and had taken Sid into confidence. In return for Sid facilitating her alliance with Marc, she returns Sid's car to him and also absolves him of the responsibility to pay alimony.

Sonali is shocked when she learns that Ira is Sid's ex-wife and that Sid had purposely kept her in the dark, making her act against her principles. She is very unhappy about being instrumental in separating a loving couple (Marc and Maggie) just so that Sid could get his ex-wife off his back. This leads to Sonali walking out on Sid whom she had started loving. Sid and Sonali's partnership also breaks.

Heart-broken at losing his new love, Sid decides to make amends. He pleads with Sonali to join him in getting Marc and Maggie together again. Sonali makes it clear to him that although she'd never partner him again, she would work with him this one last time so that she could undo the wrong committed by her inadvertently. Sid and Sonali seek the assistance of Marc's grandmother (Helen) who lives in Goa. The grandmother manages to call Marc and Maggie to Goa to her house and feigns ignorance about their breakup.

What happens then? Do Sid and Sonali succeed in their mission of uniting Marc and Maggie? Or is it impossible to bring Marc and Maggie together again? Does the separated couple ever get to know of the role played by Sid and Sonali in their breakup? What about Ira? Does she get to know of Sid and Sonali's mission? What is her stand? And does Sonali forgive Sid?

Jodi Breakers Review: Script Analysis

Sanyukta Chawla's story about two divorce facilitators messing it up and, in the process, also messing up their own relationship is quite novel but that's about all! Beyond that, the drama is full of loopholes. Screenplay writer Aakash Kaushik has done a job that leaves a lot to be desired. The biggest defect of the screenplay is that the film's second half – the entire drama created to get the separated couple together again, seems unwarranted as merely telling them the truth would've sufficed. Orchestrating the drama with the help of the grandmother would've worked if and only if admitting to their mistake and confessing before Marc and Maggie would not have been enough – and that would've been the case if the love between Marc and Maggie had gotten over completely. For, the orchestrated drama seems to be directed more at reigniting the love than anything else. But the fact that there's no more love between Marc and Maggie has not been established and so the entire drama to reignite it looks meaningless. Maggie is shown to be sad and shattered, not out of love. Even Marc is shocked and hurt at what he is led to believe about Maggie; if he has fallen out of love, it is not established well enough.

Also, the fact that Sonali is very principled and Sid had to hide the fact about Ira being his ex-wife from her and also the other facts of the case from her is established after the facts are revealed to the audience. A far better option would've been for the screenplay writer to establish the fact about her principles beforehand.

All in all, the drama in the film's second half doesn't hold. And the incidents in the first half are too stretched to create much of an impact. In other words, the screenplay is defective. Dialogues, penned by Aakash Kaushik, are fairly nice. The muting of the sound in some of the dialogues, due to censor objections, sticks out like a sore thumb.

Jodi Breakers Review: Star Performances

R. Madhavan acts with effortless ease, very smoothly slipping into the character of Sid. He makes several scenes a delight to watch because of his natural acting. Bipasha Basu looks pretty and performs ably. Omi Vaidya has his moments of comedy. However, the scene of his speech in front of a group of ladies is hardly funny and will not be understood by many among those who do not consume alcohol. Besides, it looks a poor cousin of and too heavily inspired by the actor's landmark speech scene in 3 Idiots. Milind Soman does an average job. Dipannita Sharma Atwal is alright. Mrinalini Sharma is quite earnest. Helen lends fair support. Mazhar Syed (as Sid's friend, Sahil), Tarana Raj (as Sid's cardiologist friend, Isha), Paritosh Sand (as the doctor) and Bomie (as the old man on the operation table) provide adequate support.

Jodi Breakers Review: Direction & Music

Ashwini Chaudhary's direction is average. His narrative style does not get the audience hooked on to the drama. Of course, he is also handicapped by the weak script. Salim-Sulaiman's music is very nice. Kunwara and Darmiyaan songs are the pick of the lot. The Bipasha song is also appealing.Mujhko teri zaroorat hai has lilt and melody. Irshad Kamil's lyrics are praiseworthy. Song picturisations (Rajeev Surti and Bosco-Caesar) are good but could've been better. Camerawork (by Arun Varma) is eye-filling. The locales of Greece are a treat for the eyes. Sets (Aparna Raina) are appropriate. Production values are nice.

Jodi Breakers Review: Komal Nahta's Verdict

On the whole, Jodi Breakers is not too much of an entertainer and will not be able to break even. Considering the dull start and lack of merits in it, it will entail losses to all concerned.

Jodi Breakers & Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya Off To A Dull Start

February 24th, 2012 by Komal Nahta

Posters of Jodi Breakers and Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya

Jodi Breakers and Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya, both the Hindi films released today (24 February 2012), have taken a dull opening at the Indian box-office.

At most places, the opening collections of the Ritesh Deshmukh-Genelia D'souza starrer, Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya, were better than those of the R.Madhavan-Bipasha Basu starrer, Jodi Breakers. At a few other places, the opening collections of Jodi Breakers were better than those of Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya.

However, overall, the opening of both the films was dull.

Jodi Breakers

Rating: 1.5

February 24, 2012

Cast: R Madhavan, Bipasha Basu, Milind Soman, Dipannita Sharma, Helen, Omi Vaidya, Mrinalini Sharma

Director: Ashwini Chaudhary

R Madhavan, looking like he's just devoured an all-you-can-eat buffet, frolicks with a dozen-or-so bikini-clad extras by a sun-kissed pool. Jodi Breakers, directed by Ashwini Chaudhary, clearly doesn't bother with basic aesthetics. To be fair, the film doesn't bother with a coherent script either.

Madhavan is Sid, a happily divorced 'break-up expert' who splits up couples for a living. Business booms when he takes on a partner in Sonali, played by Bipasha Basu. But things go downhill when Sid accepts a job to separate the perfectly compatible Pereiras (Milind Soman and Dipannita Sharma) for all the wrong reasons. This cheerfully mediocre film throws in a lazy twist at interval point, and from then on Jodi Breakers only slips deeper into a quagmire of stupidity.

Intended as a romantic comedy, the film fails on both counts. The humor is pedestrian and includes tired gags involving gay bartenders, and doctors arguing during surgery. The romantic portions too are corny'particularly some long, drunken babbling about the perfect kiss.

Packed with every standard romantic-movie clich, Jodi Breakers is a strain on your nerves, and it doesn't help that most of the cast is as dull as dishwater. Omi Vaidya as an oversexed lothario is a bitter pill to swallow, and Milind Soman and Deepanita Sharma were evidently hired only for their looks. The charming R Madhavan has a few inspired moments, but he comes off as too sloppy to play a rom-com lead. Bipasha Basu, on the other hand, is a gorgeous distraction, but doesn't have the spontaneity of her co-star.

Despite an interesting premise, the film doesn't work because its characters inspire no affection. I'm going with one-and-a-half out of five for director Ashwini Chaudhary's Jodi Breakers. Feast your eyes on the stunning Greece locales; it's the only pleasure this film provides.
