I am South African by birth and country and of Indian ancestory, and a huge Hindi and sometimes Tamil movie fan(only Rajnikanth of course).I am curious about a few things.Firstly, you know that we are the Rainbow Nation and that means that we live in a society of African, European, Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Greek, Spanish, French, German, Dutch etc descendants and we are mostly 3rd or 4th generation descendants here. What I am curious about is, how big a community of blacks do you have in India?
And what culture do they follow, if you have a community of blacks?
Are they African of descent and how did such a community form?
Or are they just in India because of employment rather, then what other forms of employment are they engaged in, rather than just Bollywood?
Would love to hear from you guys on this matter, since India and South Africa is simpatico with each other economically and politically as developing countries.

I havent seen a big Black community in India. There are a four main types:
1. The student community who study in reputed Indian universities due tie up between Indian Govt and the various African govts. This is the majority.
2. The notorious criminal community mainly peddling drugs and running internet scams. The Indian policemen are scared of this type as its tough for the puny Indian to physically control the larger Africans.
3. The expat working community which is small in number. They work in industries as varied as Bollywood to corporate depending on education and skills.
4. Descendants of Black immigrants who were brought to India by the British and other European powers as part of their armies in the 19th century. This number is very small and I guess they married Indian and became mixed race. Many also moved to Europe or Africa. But there are small pockets of people of African origin still around.
Types 1, 2 and 3 are obviously follow their own cultures. The type also follow their own cultures mixed with Islam or Christianity.

Thanks, I know that the Indian embassy down here encourages a lot of black students to study in India.
Ironical, that the British took Indian and left them in African countries, and then took Africans to India.

I like the way the topic has turned. Discussing about communities.

There was the butler in Dulha Mil Gaya. He had a very small role though, maybe 4 scenes tops. There were some others in the scene right before the first song.

There were some blacks in Kal Ho Na Ho, the kids playing in the neighborhood and in the song Pretty Woman.

Yea, blacks in Bollywood is a rare case unfortunately considering all the white blonde girls that are used. I think black folks are usually featured as background dancers.

Good luck with your thesis!
